Slingin' Sammy "Super Soaker" Merrill

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Here's a video of all Sam's 3s this season. Some things I've noted:

He has good push from his legs every time.
His release is just a flick at the top.
He's extremely consistent. I agree his shot is similar to Kyle Korver's.

I’m scared to watch this right now. I’m in a public cafe and don’t want to be arrested for the public indecency that watching this video would cause

Moar minutes for Sammy please. I wanna fucking see hiw good he can get with more touches, confidence , etc. doing what he does with so little pt is insane.
He’s amazingly consistent

First half, second half, garbage time, small minutes, big minutes, playing with the stars, playing with the scrubs.

The shots he takes and looks he gets are the same in pretty much all situations. Man doesn’t need to get ready, he stays ready, torch lit all 48 minutes whether he’s in the game or sitting on the bench

Unheard of really.

Not to put the kid on a pedestal, but think about it.... he not only CAN, but SHOULD improve!

-his personal success breeds more internal confidence
-team has more confidence in him and look for him even more
-physically he matures, gets stronger
-continued coaching/practice opportunities
-knowledge of the league/defenders

The above with his solid shooting fundamentals, and effort to continually be on the move.... the future is bright with this one....very bright.

Ive mentioned the name several times before, yet folks keep going back to Kyle Korver, for some reason.

JJ Redick is who Sam has been playing like *because* he's playing like more than just catch-and-shoot. Just so happens they're almost the exact same size. They both run relentlessly on the court. Both fairly limited athletically. And, guess who I recently found out the team gave tape to Sam to study? JJ Redick.
This is a better comparison.

There were top secret Ben rumors I wasn't allowed to share back in the Chris Grant era: Redick was offered at a trade deadline to the Cavs for a second rounder and a scrub to match salaries. I am a little rusty on the exact trade deadline, he was either out of the Magic rotation or it was that one season in Milwaukee.

Cavs turned it down because Grant was still dead set on tanking and stocking up on assets, even second rounders. Could you imagine if Redick was around when LeBron came back?

Chris Grant was no Sashi Brown.

Best three point shooter of all time.

JJ Reddick. I'm more familiar with Kyle Korver, watching him play against and with the Cavaliers. JJ Reddick is the same size-ish, but Sam is an inch shorter 6 4, but muscular at 205. JJ was taller and skinnier to my eyes. I didn't see much of his playing or shooting style, so I can't compare.

I remember clearly Kyle being confused when he came to Cleveland and asked about plays to get him open, JR Smith just laughed and said, "Just stay ready. Lebron will get the ball to you." Of course, Lebron sucked the defense to himself and Kyle was wide open. He couldn't believe it.

Later in 2018, we did run plays with TT screening the 3-point arc and Kyle running across it, while Lebron drove the lane. Open. Boom.

They're almost the same exact size...which is why I don't get why people keep dismissing the comparison...

I always heard JJ Reddick was 6 5. I would never have guessed he reached 200 pounds.

I wasn't dismissing your comparision. I was comparing the shooting styles. Korver's is the closest to Merrill's I've seen. Very much an instant snap shot.

Maybe Reddick had the same style. I don't remember.

Not saying he can't get better, but he is 27. Which we generally consider prime time of career. Crazy enough we don't really need him to get much better, we just need him to continue at this performance level.

He took 2 years off for a mission and he played very little NBA ball the last 3 years in his NBA career.

He probably wont shoot better, cant imagine better than 44% on high volume from 3, but I do think he can improve his comfortablitity on the court with non shooting offensive things like passing and better defensive rotations.

Plus we need more than just Mitchell skipping down the court before Merrill even makes the shot, lol

Hopscotch enough? Double-dutch?
