Small Forward Safari (2022-23 edition)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Put this in another thread but figured it would be better here.

list of SF in the last year of their contract. any them get bought out towards the end of the season that could join us?

Where would any of these guys (other than Middleton) play?

We would be looking for a starting SF that would mean LeVert would goto the bench. So are you saying you would not add anyone to the team at the deadline or buyout?

Im saying, other than Khris Middleton or Cam Johnson, none of those guys would start over Levert. I have doubts many, if any, would get time over Dean Wade. Im curious what the reason for making a trade, short of a clear upgrade, is. If a dude is a lateral move (at best) to what we have, I don't make a trade for this team.

Its interesting how some players look fantastic when they move down the pecking order and have a clear defined role. LeVert has talent, just isnt an Alpha, but been doing fantastic as 3rd banana back court, and maybe the 5 option as a starter.

Wade has just grown into a solid role player. The type that can help a team win the championship.

With the Cam Johnson injury, that is a pretty interesting dynamic now.

A player who is playing for a contract, is not going to rush back and a team REALLY pressed to win now.

If Johnson tore his meniscus (which they have yet to clarify) that is multi month recovery.......and if there's any complications in recovery, could mean season ending (it can be up to 8+ months in some cases).

I feel like the Suns might consider dealing Johnson if he did indeed tear it. They are in cap hell here and would be tasked with signing a player to a giant extension that they won't see play this season. Will definitely be interesting to watch.

I'd be kicking the tires on a Caris for Cam Johnson swap and seeing if that is a remote possibility.

Would anyone eat Shamut's contract in a transaction like that?

CLE: Johnson, Crowder, Shamut
PHO: Caris, Cedi, 2nd rounder

That would give Phoenix someone to plug in at the 3 and potentially retain in the off-season, while also ditching the additional years Shamut has on his contract.

I'm honestly unsure on compensation for someone like Johnson though.....now that he is injured. I assume trading him is a non starter if he just needs the meniscus trimmed but if it is a full on tear, it seems like an opportunity for a team to step in and offer someone like a Caris type player for him.

Caris is giving far too much to the 2nd best team in the League to trade him for Jae Crowder and Landry Shamets contract. Crowder is a malcontent on the tail end of his career. I want him nowhere near this lockerroom. Cam will likely command a bigger deal than Caris will get, while being unsure how he'll play next year (and beyond). Caris has filled every role imaginable this year. Cam, even when healthy, can't be a secondary playmaker.

I like Cam, but not for this deal.

I think the calculus is a lot harder with the team winning but in a vacuum, I personally would make this trade.

But the league is more wide open this season (to me) and dealing Caris would certainly make us worse in the short term.

I think we can get secondary playmaking from Rubio or even a buyout candidate but we are really going to struggle to fill the small forward spot relative to our draft capital and cap limitations.

With Crowder, I'm not even sure you do anything with him other than take him off of the Suns' hands. The deal is to land Johnson......if it means cutting or buying out Crowder, I'd be doing whatever it takes.

I more so was pointing out that a full meniscus repair probably wedges the door open on a trade for Cam when prior to, it was firmly slammed shut. So it has gone from pipe dream to 1% possible. :chuckle:

What are peoples thoughts on Roco? He gets no pt with Clippers

He would be a great fit on our team, especially paired as a 4 with Mobley, but I have no clue as to what the Clippers are going to do at this point. The whole Kawhi situation makes things really murky for them. I also have no idea as to what we could offer LAC in return. They could probably stand to consolidate a few guys to upgrade a position. I’m not really sure that that could be.

I wouldn’t want any part of Crowder. Guy is a garbage can.

Kevin porter Jr in theory would've been nice
No thanks. I think even Rocket fans are waking up to the fact he's low IQ and not a winning player. It's too bad as he has the physical profile.

He is Kelly Oubre without the defense or the willingness to play off ball....and way more of a chucker on ball

Prime Kelly oubre would be perfect. Current oubre would probably be our best sf
