Since the Utah trade, I've been trying to think of a replacement for Lauri. A plus-sized wing with the ability to shoot from range. I tried various searches for "best small forwards not in the NBA" and didnt turn up much. So, what guys are out there? No matter how bad a fit they are (on the surface, on in real life), who would be on your list as available?

Guys I've put on the list (again, not thinking about fit until theres a list worth looking thorugh):
Carmelo Anthony
Joe Johnson
Michael Beasley
Jabari Parker
Trevor Ariza
Nemanja Blejica
Ignas Brazdekas
Arnoldas Kulboka
Matt Ryan

Who ya got?

This is just depressing. Both thinking about filling this position after having traded away all our young talent and draft picks, and also this specific list of has-beens.

I recommend just rooting for Dean Wade to get minutes and be good

Is Parker a SF??? How old is Trevor now?
JJ is done!

I like how you googled "Best SF not in the NBA" and immediately wondered if Koby is as smart.

Brazdekas seems like a good idea.

He torched the Cavs in their last Orlando game and put the team in the play in.

Isn't he 3 and D? I really don't know him. He's a Beilein guy. I was surprised to hear he didn't stick, but Orlando is loaded with wings

Does he suck? Was that game against the cavs just a late season fluke?

22/23 isn’t the year to find the SF solution unless they can swing a trade for one.

But 23/24 is shaping up to be a good one, especially with the Cavs potentially able to clear ~$30m in cap space, potentially more depending on the new CBA.

UFA:

Wiggins
Barnes
Bogdanovich
Oubre

PO:

Middleton
Kuzma
Hart
Otto Porter

RFA:

Hunter
Cam Johnson
PJ Washington
Nassir Little

Johnson, Kuzma, or Hunter would be absolute coups to land at this stage in the roster building, and they fit in with the timeline.

This is a great perspective. Didn’t realize we could clear so much space in a year with a lot of classic SFs possibly available

Cam Johnson please on a sign and trade. I would be willing to give up my left testical to make it happen, get off your hands Koby.

I kind of thought this was an issue initially but see it as more of an opportunity now..

Considering the role for what the Cavs need a SF to do has narrowed considerably, shoot 3's and play D, the pathway to acquiring one becomes a bit easier.. The ceiling isn't quite as high as it was before in trying to find a do everything, two-way wing which everybody in the league wants and so few actually have..

Considering the Cavs already have a lot invested in their Core4 and the role they're asking for their 5th starter to be, I really view this year as a golden opportunity to develop a cost effective solution..

Wade, Stevens and Okoro (and Windler if you want) all possess some of the skillset they'd theoretically want out of their SF -- some more than others.. If they can develop one of those guys to fill their SF hole, they can not only keep them around but do so at a likely extremely affordable rate, on a multi-year deal and be able to allocate financial investments elsewhere..

In an ideal world, Wade/Stevens/Okoro break through and are able to fill a role the Cavs would either have to a). pay the full MLE to or b). use their already limited trade assets to acquire.. In turn, they can rellocate those assets to bettering the team elsewhere --- likely Love or LeVert's replacement, and adding more shooting..

If the Cavs end up needing to go this route, then so be it, but the Cavs should try to explore their in-house options first..

You know what’s not depressing

Our roster.

Our high end talent and overall depth.

There are few if any perfect rosters. We should look to improve internally and externally at SF no doubt, but let’s not have some defeatist attitude that it’s a fatal flaw. Plenty of good teams with good SF’s don’t have the overall roster talent we have. That good SF they have won’t guarantee them beating us.

Coming back here to say it’s really fucking irritating that we couldn’t get Bojan Bogdanovic as a throw in on the Mitchell trade given that he just went to Detroit for almost nothing - Kelly Olynyk and Saben Lee! Our offense would be unstoppable with Bogdanovic!

Maybe I’m naive but I think Bogdanovic this year could have been the edge that got us to the ECF - he would make our offense nearly unstoppable and when motivated he’s a good defender. But I hope you’re right about Okoros upside
