So long, David Griffin

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Grave-dig!

Griff's plan failed, and he is throwing a lot of people under the bus on his way down. He tossed logs on the Alvin Gentry bonfire. He has Zion avoiding the franchise.

Thoughts on the guy who helped win us a ship from the big chair in 2022?

Not qualified for a LeBron-less club.

His best move was trading for channing and saving that team. I am not sure he has a great vision of the modern nba or how to build a competitive team in it.

When Griffin was hired, RCF was warned that he is two-faced. In the NBA front office world, a certain amount of lying is prerequisite. However, all the critics are coming out of the woodwork. He pissed off JJ Redick, not realizing Redick would eventually have a huge podcast and tons of credibility.

Why did they let go of Lonzo Ball? With him I bet they’re in the play-in. Devonte Graham is their PG

Griff played a role in helping the Cavs win our only title, so I'll always be thankful for that.

But he's been by far the worst GM in the league since taking the New Orleans gig. Off the top of my head:
  • Trading the 4th pick (4 and 5 were De'Andre Hunter and Garland) in 2019 for the 8/17/35 picks (Jaxon Hayes/NAW/Didi Louzada).
  • Trading for and extended Steven Adams, a massive paint clogger that clearly was a horrendous fit next to Zion.
  • Cycling through 3 coaches in 3 years.
  • The Zion debacle.
  • The JJ Redick debacle.
  • Trading Jrue Holiday for Bledsoe's bad contract + some late firsts from Milwaukee.
  • Letting Lonzo go for nothing.
Ultimately, Griff's horrendous mismanagement of a golden platter of assets could drive basketball out of New Orleans. A shame for them, but thanks for Garland, Griff!

I forgot about Jrue Holiday. So Griff might be responsible for Milwaukee’s title last year, because Holiday was indispensible. Thanks Griff!

I was wildly wrong about Garland -- hat-tip to @RchfldCavRaised and @dark2332 -- but I've thought Griffin was massively overrated since he first got here.

I remember a lot of the board getting on him in 2017 for not doing more to improve the team post-championship. Even leading up to it, he kinda stumbled into the Channing Frye deal which gave us a very valuable contributor on the floor and more importantly unified the locker room. He traded 1st rounders like they were spare stacks of printer paper...just a very overrated GM. He was pretty solid on NBA TV tho

I am hoping he gets Ingram to us somehow as a final act and then comes out to admit his true goal was to get us a dynasty and multiple championships as a double agent.

While many were simply happy with becoming a winning team, you were definitely aware on Griffin early.

Pointing to items such as overspending to clear spots for LeBron.

Using up our 1st rounders like candy for marginal improvements.

Some of the poorly-negotiated contract extensions and hold outs.

Looking back, it’s pretty obvious that Griffin succeeded based on the war chest Grant left him and LeBron deciding Cleveland part two would be good for his resume.

I think Griffin's biggest contribution to the team was as Kyrie's "psychologist"; LeBron managed Kyrie on the court, while Griffin dealt with him behind-the-scenes, providing a crucial buffer before his meltdown.

I thought Griff made some pretty shrewd moves when it came to cap management; he made some very "Morey-esque" moves by trading for/grabbing filler contracts that he'd shed to increase our cap long before Morey became noteworthy for doing so. The Shump and JR trade, particularly for the latter, ended up working out brilliantly (at least at first) and made Griffin look like a seer (though LeBron obviously had a lot of input there.)

I liked the acquisition of Mozgov, as we were just bleeding points in the middle, but the dispensation of 2 1st-round pics made me squeamish at the time and still does. The Channing trade was great. I hated the Korver move, carelessly tossing another 1st-round pic away for an aging shorter when we should have been looking to fortify our porous defense.

I'll never forget the article that came out though where Griffin looked back on his time as the Cavs' GM and admitted to crying in the fetal position when news of LeBron's return broke. That was such a pitiful look, and it made me a lose even more respect for him.

Ultimately you have to give the guy a hand for having a role in our only championship. I don't like some of the moves he made and his tenure in NO lends credence to the theory that his "success" was mostly due to Grant's asset accumulation and LeBron. I at least give him credit for constantly being proactive and trying to address our needs, even if his approach was wayward at times.

It's absolutely incredible when you hear this, but you're absolutely right. While I don't think Zion ever wanted to be there, Griff really gave him an out. Those poor fans will never recover from this.
