The 2014 NFL Playoffs Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sherman apologized for what he said. So either he had some regrets or someone in management didn't like what he said. And he may not be a thug but he sure made himself seem like one. Just came off as selfish and immature and I'm glad he realizes it. I don't have a problem with trash talk at all but there's a time and a place.

Sorry, do you know what a thug is?

Has Andrews actually defended him, though? Doesn't sound like a defense here:

“He lost his mind and it was awesome — for once,” Andrews told The Dan Patrick Show on Monday (via ExtraMustard.Si.com). “I do think they [Fox's producers] might have been worried about language.”

Pretty much a non-defense, like a non-apology: more like 'he just got me a ton of free press, and he did it at his own expense and not mine, so what do I care?' And she admitted the interview was cut off- which a reasonable person would have assumed based upon the producer quickly cutting the shot away before she awkwardly ended the interview. Unless that is how sideline reporters always end them- not sure. I only noticed this particular event because all of a sudden there was a guy yelling at me on the TV.

I think very few, outside of the Skip Baylesses of the sports world (which is, unfortunately, a large faction), are upset. And if they are, it is the usual fake umbrage that sports personalities invoke to gain attention. It was just embarassing for Sherman. He just acted a fool. He sounded like a WWF star talking to Paul Heyman. Prob is, while that works as a shtick in sports entertainment, on an actual sports field it is just something that makes people roll their eyes. Like when Brock Lesnar went all heel in his post fight interview after his second Frank Mir right. Brock looked like a fool then, as Sherman did yesterday. Has little to do with trash talk, and everything to do with having some sense. Real quality trash talkers invite their loud-mouthed opponents to Brazil for a BBQ. I've seen good, trash talk- and that wasn't it.

Frankly, I don't care how Sherman acts- he can keep doing this if he wants. Calling him a 'thug' is over the top, and no, I don't think he deserves that moniker based on this. But I'll just laugh at it, not because he is being witty but because he comes across as a moron whose performance, apparently, didn't really do the talking if he has to tell you all about how awesome it was. All this has really done is overshadow what was an excellent performance by him.

I don't think he's a thug, but despite the bravado they display outwardly, I think people like him are extremely self-conscious and insecure. It reminds me of something Terrell Owens would've done. I bet Sherman was picked on in elementary school or something. And I'm not being facetious. He's got a complex.

It's not true rage or passion or whatever you want to call it. It's manufactured. Those people always have some kind of internal struggle going on and they try way too hard to mask it. He tries too hard. He goes out of his way to be a jerk. That's not normal.

I think you are reading waaaaaay too much into this. When it comes to professional athletes, trash-talking is to be expected with most of them to an extent. Some guys get a little more into than others (Sherman, Steve Smith, Finnegen, etc) because they know that they are among the best at their position and can back it up. When they find another hard-headed trash talker and beat them, they are going to go off on them and rub it in. It is literally nothing else, there is no internal struggle that he is trying to mask.

I'm not one to initiate trash talking to other players when I'm playing intramurals or pick-up games at the rec. But if someone is talking trash to me and I show them up, you better believe after the game I'm going to remind him of all the smack he talked and how he couldn't back it up. I guess that means I have some deep emotional struggles that I'm trying to mask though :chuckles:

I'm not talking abot this specific interview he gave last night. The thing with Sherman is he has this NEED to prove himself.

I really think he is a good guy. But I do think he tries too hard to show people that HE is great, that HE talks trash, that HE is all-pro, etc.

Again, I don't mind the trash talk.

We must have a pretty different definition because if you don't think him screaming into a mic talking shit about another player and how he is the best doesn't come off a little thuggish I don't know what to tell ya man.

For the record I don't think he is a thug by any means. One of my favorite players. I just don't like how he handled that situation.

Amazing how much this non story is being discussed. It was pretty damn hilarious. Sherman slapped Crabtree on the ass after the interception which typically in sports signifies congratulating someone and he got pushed in the face in exchange. Don't interview people seconds after huge adrenaline pushing plays if you want them calm and composed.

Aaron Hernandez is a thug

I like Aaron Hernandez...

Just kidding.

But seriously, fuck society. Everybody is so soft these days. He was happy. He just secured a berth to the Superbowl by beating the 49ers. He and Crabtree were probably going back and forth the whole game. Sherman won the battle (indiviually and team-wise) and he was understandably happy/excited. Crazy how this little interview is such a polarizing and debated topic...

Man the fuck up. I don't know how this would offend anyone...unless you're a sulking 49ers fan.

I love that Sherman said Crabtree wasnt a good WR, and then used Josh Gordon as an example of a good WR.

Then he mocked our quarterbacks.

Not that anything he said was false, but his message still made me feel good then kicked me in the balls.

Our Quarterbacks are the biggest joke in the league, who wouldn't mock them?

One could make the argument that you need plenty of self promotion in a league where shelf-life is so short.

Let's be real here...shit-talking makes sports better. I want the teams to hate each other. It makes for better, more competitive games where the guys on both sides really, really want to win.

Just look at what's become of the NBA due to the modern high school system. The guys are all friends and so few of them have the competitive fire that fueled guys like Jordan and Kobe. It sucks. Playoff games are always more fun when you get two teams who really hate each other, like the Cavs and Pistons during LeBron's tenure here, or the Pacers and Heat now.

To be honest, whenever I watch a basketball game I'm secretly hoping a fight breaks out. Makes it a lot more exciting.
