The 2020 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
That 95 indians team was stacked on offense. 3 guys with an OPS above .950 and another 4 guys with an OPS between .800-.900.

Best offense in the league, and best/2nd best pitching in the league (depending on how you rank NL versus AL). That team was made to win it all. Fucking braves

They won 100 games in a season where they didn't play 18 games in a shortened season.

Yeah, that team was ok I guess, lol.

Personally I argue its the greatest team ever to NOT win a World Series.

95 we were an ass kicking power house. Tons of talent and depth. They dominated everyone.

However, Id argue that 96 was a better team. Pitching actually improved, Sandy became full time catcher, all core players improved. I would argue the only hole was old ass Julio Franco (should have been a plaoon of our younger guys).

Similar thought process as I would apply to the Cavs. 2016 we won it all, but barring Durant, 2017 Cavs were a better & deeper team.

Old ass Julio Franco played like what? 10+ more years after that year?

I think they guy is still playing somewhere in the Dominican, lol

Julio was damn good in '96 though

Much better than Sorrento was in '95.

Murray, Baerga, and Sandy all stunk at the plate in '96 though.

So all of us talk about how awesome that game 6 was in the 95 ALCS, from the otherside it was one of the most heartbreaking moments in Seattle sports history (until in the interception in the superb owl).

My wife doesnt talk sports much, however we were listenign to music the other day and a Macklemore song titled "my, oh, my" came on (which is partially about the 95 Ms team) and she opened up a bit. That 95 team for the mariners was supposed to be the team that actually made it to the world series (reminder the mariners to this day still have never made the world series) it featured some absolutely amazing players to include griffey and johnson. She told me during after hour school programs they would turn the games on for all the kids to watch/listen to and that EVERYONE was attached to the team. During game 5 against the yankees in the ALDS, there was a school play and the kids huddled around a radio listening between the different scenes (she was 10 at the time). She said that it was by far and away the most she ever saw a sports team bring together that city (she moved away in 04).

So while I consider it one of the the best cleveland sports memories, Seattle fans have a slightly different view.

Then 6 years later there was "The Comeback". Man M's fans must hate cleveland.

The favorite sports rerun near the top of my reddit reads I liked yesterday was the LeBron response to "man's game."

People call that our rally moment, but I always see Bynum attending that game as our other original "rally possum." :)

Honestly, Clay Bennett has to be several orders of magnitude worse for Seattle than either of those two you mentioned?

I dunno. The 2016-17 Cavs were a significantly worse team defensively than the 2015-16 team. Significant drop off in just about every advanced stat category. Shump, J.R., Love, TT...they all dropped off. But I think it was really the falloff of both Shump and JR that killed us.

As for the Tribe, the pitching wasn't nearly as good in 1996. In the bullpen, Mesa went being a sure thing to below average. Tavarez, who was the key set-up guy along with Plunk in 1995, just fell apart completely in 96. As for starters, Martinez and Hershisher both were significantly worse than in 1995. Black Jack McDowell also was a huge disappointment as the 4th starter. Nagy improved, but not nearly enough to make up for the dropoff elsewhere.

Correct; 51-31 teams cannot be put in any sort of "great" category.

Their offense was all-time-great, yes, but their defense was horrible.

Not to mention that their average "The Diff" was only +3.1, compared to +6.0 in the previous season; this has always been a better metric of team quality than anyone who says "meh, regular season" would think.

He's been a player/coach in like the Korean minor leagues last I checked. I still dont think he want to retire lol

Report: MLBPA wants full year of service time if season is canceled

With Major League Baseball's season perpetually in limbo due to the coronavirus shutdown, the league and the players' association face myriad logistical issues to iron out before play resumes.

One is how service time will be calculated if there's a shortened or canceled campaign.

The players' union reportedly wants its members to accrue a full year of service time even if no games are played, according to Ronald Blum of The Associated Press.

This would kill the trade value of Lindor and take a year off the Indians playoff window.

Looks like they are expected to come to an agreement on that today.

Per the Athletic and Rosenthal:

The players do not want their service time reduced by a shortened season, knowing it would impede their ability to reach salary arbitration and free agency as quickly as possible. MLB has agreed to grant a full year of service to players who remain active for the entire 2020 season regardless of how many games the schedule includes, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

Is there really any good argument against giving them full service time? Hell, give every player who even plays 1 game a full year.
Per the Athletic and Rosenthal:
I mean... This was a given from the getgo, right? I realize it still has to be negotiated but I can't believe the owners ever seriously considered fighting over anything different.

Now where it gets tricky is the young guys- they have to negotiate how to pro rate that bc service days are actual days if I'm not mistaken and that has to be recalculated.

For what it is worth, service time was prorated in every other season before this by number of days up in the bigs.
A player only in the bigs for half a season only got a half season of service time and so forth.
Guys that came up & made a spot start then sent back to the minors got 1 day of service time.

Not getting the angst of using the same formula now.

The only part that needs to be determined is number of games in the season.

In regards to service time, players who start on opening day will get the full year. But I bet players that get called up a week later will only get the number of games they play. There has to be a compromise somewhere.

Any way you look at it, this season will have an asterisk with it. If they start on Memorial Day, they will play about 100-110 games. They played 144 back in 1995. I am not in favor of extending the season. I wouldn't mind if they dump the All Star game to make up a few.

I think Memorial Day is extremely optimistic.

Once they get the all-clear, they'll probably still need 3 weeks or so to get ready to play.

Perhaps we are trying to say something similar but there is a part missing from your statement: A player only gets a full season of service time if he starts the season in the majors and is not optioned to the minors or released during the entire season.

The player that gets sent to the minors a month into the season only gets a month of service time. That has been the norm.

Now I get a shorter season means a multiplier of sorts gets utilized to convert shorter service time periods into a full season calculation but the idea of no games played means a full season of service time gets credited to players is ridiculous.
