The 2021 Cleveland Baseball Organization

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It’s always interesting when something like this happens. Guy is injured but they say he can play through it, but then it turns out he needs to miss a bunch of time. Did he re-injure it or was the initial diagnosis incorrect? Or did they originally think he could play through it and push the surgery to the off-season?

Tito’s quote was that they don’t have all the info yet, but it will be months, not weeks, until he is back. Good thing we have a .750 hitter to replace him!
Is the .750 his strikeout rate?

I think Napoli having a 111 wRC+ in the regular season was far more valuable than whatever he brought to the clubhouse.

Side note: the year they brought Napoli back to camp as an NRI, I brushed shoulders with him in a Columbus bar after he got assigned to the Clippers. Tiny little fella :chuckle:

Which one would you want it in? The convo went from Miller to Chang so in this case half of the convo was 100% relevant while Chang's status effects Miller, Clement etc... If we talked about Bauers vs Bradley in here would that also be irrelevant since they effect each other?
If you want to talk about the Cleveland roster, here’s a thread for it.

The Indians have told their scouting staff they are free to leave and seek a more stable situation. Two have already left.
Sorry this is sort of sketchy, but the story is behind a paywall at cleveland.com.

The only thing keeping this franchise competitive year after year is the scouting. Think Santana, Brantley, Kluber, Clevinger, Carrasco...all of them identified by Indians' scouts as players to target in trades while they were still in the minors.

OTOH, the column makes the point that there's no need for scouts to physically be present as the pitch tracking technology in minor league parks reveals all. There's also video. But what about scouting high school and college players for the draft and also the international players? Indians scouts identified Bieber, Civale, and Plesac in college and Jose Ramirez was an international signing. I'm afraid if the Indians cut back on their scouting it may not affect the team in the short term but the long term impact could be very bad.

As a team that will continue to trade players like Lindor, Bauer, and Clevinger for prospects it's critical the Indians can correctly identify the best prospects in other organizations to ask for in trades. Scouting is the lifeblood of this organization.

wouldn't the situation be the same on all teams if it has to do with labor negotiations?
A labor work stoppage obviously means there's no mlb games to scout. Not sure about MiLB. Plus there are still high school and college teams to scout. Plus the acticle mentioned other teams are asking permission to talk to our scouts. I hope more info comes out on this story.

What's the reason given for cutting scouting? Expense?

If it's technology, i could see where a smaller scouting footprint could be done, at least at the professional level given that all the games are likely available to them electronically which effectively means less travel and say 3 could handle the former load of 6 or 7. I don't know how, as it was said, you cover college/HS though.

Technology is one of the reasons given. 2020 proved you don't need tons of scouts at games.
