Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Get the fuck outta here. Az is the first with some ignorant ass 2 word comment about OUR qb making a comment in return to a bullshit question?! Az is the first in this thread with ignorant comments while a game is going on if Baker didn't put up a spectacular game...And then Az follows it up with only difference is Rosen doesnt get the same excuses it's just because the teams Rosens on. Classic stuff

Yikes.

You are absolutely crushing it in here.

Not that it will ever be discussed but that pass to Carlson was unreal.

He's fighting through some struggles but I rather like him still.

He also went about the situation the right way. He could have very easily poured more gasoline on the fire but didn't took the right path.

I am worried there will retaliation though...

He played like a young QB last night. One that has promise but isnt there yet.

But 0 turnovers and responsible for 3 TDs to keep his trend going is great. Now they have a get right game against Miami and we'll see where it goes from there.

He is getting better and his play is clearly on an upward trajectory overall. He threw several nice passes yesterday, and he’s throwing more of them with each successive game. That’s what we wanna see.

Well Myles's stupidity has caused us fans to stop talking about Baker so much.

His interview after the game was spot on, i actually like how he didnt defend Myles. Typically i think the QB needs to defend his player, but in this case here was no defense. Good for Baker. on stepping up and being a leader.

His post-game interview, along with the two throws to OBJ on the first drive and Hodge down the field later in the half, were the best part of his performance last night.

Everything else left quite a bit to be desired.

Mayfield's postgame sideline interview was excellent I thought. Even-handed, mature, fair. Set exactly the right tone. Contrast with the entitled whining of Rudolph who seemed to accept no personal responsibility for his own part in the brawl at the end and used it as an excuse to gloss over his own terrible, terrible night.

Mayfield wasn't perfect by any means but he produced enough big plays against a defense which was supposedly elite. The mantra of No Turnovers, No Formation Penalties is getting through and he deserves credit for his part in turning that around.

We're sometimes too hard on the team as a fanbase. Notwithstanding the Donnybrook at the end this was a statement win. The narrative has always been that to compete in the AFC North you often have to win ugly and that's what happened. The Steelers now know when they face the Browns in a fortnight's time that Cleveland won't back down from the physical nature of the game. That's surely a good thing.

For all the knocks against Kitchens he now has wins against Harbaugh and Tomlin. He out-coached Tomlin last night I thought. From the first minutes I could see the Steelers going into damage-limitation mode. Something they signally failed to carry out.

Over on the the game thread people were slamming the conservative nature of much of the play-calling but given that Baker was often hurried and Chubb failed to produce a signature gamebreaking run the end justified the means.

Onwards.

Could you tell if the pass he missed to OBJ (who ran an out) on third down and the one he missed to Jarvis (who turned up field) were poor throws or receivers running bad routes?

Jarvis' leaves a little room for error IMO, not sure where that one lied but I'd like to go back and look again.

I don't know of any route in which OBJ is in position to catch that ball. Or the fade he subsequently threw towards the end.

Just does not seem at all capable of settling in or finding rhythm,

What you’re saying is, if we ignore the things he did well, he didn’t have a good game?

This is like the time Jamal Lewis ran for 250 yards and someone said if we ignore all of his runs over 15 yards, Lewis had a bad game.

Well no, its not like that at all. Lewis consistently ran well, made people miss, and matriculated the ball down the field.

Baker made two nice plays that, quite frankly, any QB should make in that situation. But was largely ineffective and inconsistent as he's been all season.

The Browns had three drives all game which went for more than 25 yards. Mayfield was 17-for-32 and was largely inefficient.

Good luck convincing people that this game was magical or equivalent to Jamal Lewis' 250 yard game that was, at the time, the best performance in NFL History.

I think a lot of Baker's issues come down to miscommunication with his receivers. They just don't seem to be on the same page. He can make every throw and he made some big-time throws last night. I feel very confident in believing he's a better QB than he's shown for much of this season.

As far as the post-game presser is concerned, it's in Baker's best interest to get out in front of the Myles issue ASAP. He has to know that any retaliation is going to feature him as the primary target.
