Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Except the offensive line was so atrocious and every single series we ended in 3rd and long thanks to the playcalling.
Did you watch that Ballard of Mayfield that was posted? It was a good watch and explained that Mayfield’s mechanics help contribute to the pressure by taking longer than most QBs to finish his drop back and results in a deeper drop back that gives edge rushers easier angles to rush the passer

I’ll be honest and say I don’t know nearly enough about QB mechanics to really comment on its ramifications. @I’mWithDan @AZ_ did you either of you watch the video? Any commentary about if this is changeable at this point or if it’s something that just has to be accepted (the guy in the video basically said at this point it’s set in stone)

I did watch it.

He also clearly stated that Mayfield is much better under center in play action because it doesn’t allow the defense to shoot gaps like they would in shot gun and the Browns line simply cannot block anyone. It essentially manufactures a clean pocket because it keeps the DT and DE holding particular gaps that they otherwise could disregard in shotgun.

What does Freddie do? Put Mayfield in shot gun all day long.

I liked that video, but in no way shape or form is it Mayfields fault with how fast those guys were in the backfield this weekend. That shit was brutal to watch.

The pick at the end of the game was really bad and so was his fumble which essentially salted the game away for us.

Even if Mayfield is slower than most QBs, there's a path forward. Have a strong interior line and two tight ends that chip block on the edges. As described in the video, it's New England's bread and butter.

Funny enough, this team is good against the blitz. Baker has a 98 QB rating when blitzed. When this team is forced to play an uptempo style, they're really good

He needs to learn to live to fight another day. Throwing a ball away >> taking a sack. He’s not an athletic QB and he needs to stop thinking he is. And they need to stop calling long developing plays if they can’t protect him, as well. He’s an A+ arm talent with great accuracy. Not a runner.

At least he's got Emily protecting him.

You get him around a good coach, and a better line. You'll see a completely different guy. I don't have concerns over him. First half of the season I was very disappointed in him, and it definitely looked like took the off-season too lightly.

But I think he started getting better. Now we see the clear problem is bad coaching, and an awful line.

I really do think a shitty line can contribute to lots of bad mental mistakes as the game goes on. It just speeds up your through process and you start seeing ghosts out there.

Even Tom Brady needs a decent offensive line. It's just one of the things every QB needs. Other wise, you'll struggle.

Our line to me is one of the worst in football. It's terrible. Then compare that with a knuckle head like Kitchens. That's a large reason why we're missing the playoffs.

The line might be the worst line to you but statistically they rank around 10-12. Middle of the pack.

Sure be nice if we had a quarterback that can work with what he’s been given.

Baker doesn’t look like a franchise guy. He’s very physically limited.

So if you get him a good coach, and a good offensive line, to go along with the elite skill position players...

Does Baker then become scheme specific that will get neutralized in the playoffs by better teams?

They might be middle of the pack so far this year, but yesterday they were horrible. I thought Hubbard actual did a serviceable job against Watt, but Dupree was crushing McRay. There were at least 3 or 4 instances where he got a shot at Baker untouched.

You're trying to prove a point about Lamar Jackson. The people that keep parroting the shit about Jackson don't know if he'll get neutralized or not. It's just a dumb defense mechanism to protect their personal beliefs. Groupthink yadda yadda

I remember you bringing up Baker's mechanical issues around the draft and specifically his progressions being slow. Hopefully not putting words in your mouth. Does he look like the same exact player as did in college and is it too late for his footwork to be fixed?

Then he becomes the next multi MVP, super bowl winning QB.

Oh no. The horror!

No, I don’t think he’s too slow to be effective.

I thought the distance he travelled between his senior season and last year was admirable.

He’s effective when playing with rhythm and timing, but this offense doesn’t seem adept at teaching it or being able to get through to making it a successful concept with any sort of consistency.

Part of that is coaching, but at some level you have to expect Baker to just be better at this. If he’s not mentally strong enough to do that, the Browns future faces a major risk

Thank you for the insight. I enjoy your informative posts and the weekly mailbag involving you and @Amherstcavsfan

That's why we dodged a bullet with Arians.

Aside from the age/health question, the long developing plays would have been significantly worse than now.
