Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The thing about Fantasy Football is that its your decision whether or not to start someone.

Unless your league consists of about 28 teams, starting Baker Mayfield is something which should be considered user error, at this point.

For what its worth, my Fantasy Football QB is Lamar Jackson.

There's probably a reason his team is 1-4. :chuckle:

I mean, I won my league 5 times in 11 years, just a bad year and sometimes it be like that. Especially when you buy into Baker leading one hell of an offense and select him in the 7th round. Hopkins, Diggs, Howard, Baker, all clowns leading a 1-4 team.

In fairness, I’ve been there.

At one point in time, I had a third round pick (Joseph Randle) in jail by roughly the trade deadline.

Took Eddy Lacy in the Top 3 that year as well.

Rough.

Congrats on the W in handshake gate, folks.

-Colin Cowherd, maybe in the future

Some but fortunately not many redditors are clinging to the "fake but accurate" defense, i.e. the second handshake attempt, or who could blame Sherman for his preconceived notion, etc.

So what's it gonna take for Baker to right the ship?

The season rests on his shoulders.

Dorsey getting more O-line help would alleviate Baker's problems some for sure. The interior has played relatively well still and it didn't really matter how mediocre the tackles were until this season. I just don't buy it as the only solution, more like a quick-fix.

"Low IQ"

Of course, the standard stereotype.

What is an argument against athletic QBs without it?

His QB rating under pressure would suggest that Mayfield, not Jackson, is the one playing with a low IQ. And Jackson, once again, has the athletic advantage over top of it.

But we know these facts and statistics won't sway your opinion away from brainless stereotypes.

I've seen Lamar Jackson on multiple occasions this season throw across his body to the other side of the field into tight coverage and have his receiver make a great catch to bail him out.

I think Lamar Jackson is a good football player, but his IQ in the passing game is not a strength of his yet in his career.

God damn does he need to have a good week.

Mayfield and the rest of the offense need to come ready to play.. SF was ready. They had a great defensive game plan and executed. We had no answer, played sloppy and got beat...

Let’s not mislabel IQ with throwing it up and allowing your receivers to make plays.

Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes would both be incorrectly tagged with that label as well.

Calling him “low IQ” is a lazy stereotype offered to all athletic QBs.

It means nothing when he’s willing to use it for those guys, but not the player he’s “loyal” to who has been markedly worse in that department thus far.

Jackson is 22 and still has quite a bit further he can go, but I’m seeking to avoid the lazy stereotypes.

LMAO.

he literally says that part of the reason is the offensive line was so bad in camp. yikes buddy.

“Mayfield is certainly not trusting his offensive line, and there's some merit to why that is happening. He has taken some hits from a group who has not protected all too well in both camp and regular season games. The Browns defensive line got after Mayfield in camp and his outside the pocket nature started to show at those points. I am sure the seed of distrust was planted at that point. He knew his offensive line would be worse without Kevin Zeitler, but the extent of which nobody knew. The right guard shuffle through the off-season didn't help and now Mayfield is left feeling panicked and distrusting what he is seeing.”

So you're saying we need a better QB coach? My sense is he is being hamstrung a bit by a handful of small things that are adding up to a much larger problem but read progression is mainly coaching. It doesn't involve arm talent or physical ability to a large extent.....it is pre-snap read, post-snap read and move through each option. You need processing talent but I just remember how fast Baker's eyes moved in college and in that first year, so I don't think it is a lack of that. There seems to be something that has caused him to really regress his eye activity. Maybe it is a new offensive install and a bit of him not quite being comfortable with the new route combinations.

The big culprit to me, which I think is illustrated in many of those examples, is it appears Baker's initial read is many times a longer developing route.....which by nature, makes progression harder, especially with constant protection break downs. He can obviously bail early on that read but I would imagine he's being coached to stick with it, because that is the only thing that makes any sense, given his previous film and performance.

I also think protection stands out in many of those examples as well.....where the pocket is just generally a mess and the pressure is coming from different areas it seems on any given play. I'm not sure how a QB is going to consistently succeed with longer initial reads and a random assortment of protection breakdowns. Baker isn't completely absolved here, as a few of those examples show a clean pocket but I think this is a long form analysis on a single topic when there seem to be a lot of things wrong with those diagramed plays.

Also, someone get this guy an editor for christ sake. :chuckle:
