Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Lamar threw 9 completions last week. Time to start including him in the elite passer category.

We don't need to mention the 3+ drops, but he was still incredibly efficient with ball placement and his legs.

Another elite performance, all things considered. Averaging over 7.7 yards per pass attempt this season. It's not YAC either, his Intented Air Yards/pass is 7th best in the league. They're using his legs and taking shots.

Baker, on the other hand, is ahead of only Miami's Josh Rosen with a -31% DVOA for the year.

Are drops or balls that go through the hands of the receivers part of that DVOA? Just wondering because we're talking drops to benefit Lamar again & not necessarily using apples-to-apples when presenting this Baker v. Lamar comparison.

DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) calculates a team's success based on the down-and-distance of each play during the season, then calculates how much more or less successful each team is compared to the league average.

So, then the position is that Lamar is an average QB, correct? 1.1% DVOA isn't earth-shattering, which I'm guessing is why it wasn't posted next to Baker.

I watched most of the Ravens / Seahawks and I saw Lamar struggle with the same thing he has his whole career - he can't complete a short pass without a clean pocket. I don't know if it his weird throwing mechanics or what but he constantly throws his TE's and WR's low whenever he has to move out of the pocket.

With that said, SEA was spying him the entire game and he still made defenders look silly when he used his legs but he has just as much to work on as Baker does. He's thrown 1 TD in his last three games.

For as much as we try to compare him to Baker, their play style is so different that it seems pointless to get on this circle jerk every week.

On that note, how many of Baker’s INTs this season bounced off his WRs hands? Half?

I think the breakdown goes something like this

3-4 were drops by his WRs

2 were tipped at the line

1 his WR gave up on (or something like that).

It basically came out to that 6-7 of his INTs were not his direct fault, and the other 4-5 were terrible throws/decisions.

It’s almost as if someone else had this take recently and it was laughed off... :chuckle:

x6 Awful Pass (Titans #1, Titans #2, Titans #3, Jets #4, 49ers #7, Seahawks #10)

x3 Shit Happens (Rams #5, Ravens #6, Seahawks #9)

x2 WR Fault (49ers #8, Seahawks #11)

I just must not "get it". I mean, why post DVOA for one & not the other if it's so telling? Don't posters frequently get admonished by our contrarians for framing things to make a debate favor them?

the only ones i have seen are someone (i think you?) was kind enough to post 4 of the videos.

but I can tell you number 4 was tipped at the line of scrimmage.... so without seeing the rest i cant confirm how accurate your assesement is. I can only go off of what i have read/can remember.
