The Bleachers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
A few random thoughts to throw out there:

  1. Instead of simply relying on MPH for velocity, I would like to see a metric called "Time to React" where we measure a few things
    1. Determine the average time it takes an MLB hitter to execute a swing, from the moment he decides to swing, until the moment the bat becomes perpendicular to the pitch line (parallel to the front of home plate).
    2. Subtract this Average Swing Time from the measured time between the ball leaving the pitcher's hand and the ball arriving at the front of home plate
    3. I feel that this metric would give us a better picture than simply using MPH, as it would take into account things like release point, which can increase/decrease the distance the ball has to travel, and also gives us a better representation for the layman of why a 100mph pitch is so much more difficult to hit than a 90 mph pitch (even though they're just 10% different in speed, the time to react will be greatly different).
  2. I think we overrate the HR. I would like to know a few things:
    1. Pitchers' effectiveness with the bases empty versus runners on base
    2. Pitchers' effectiveness on the next batter after giving up a run when the bases are empty versus having runners on (Is it possible that giving up a HR really rattles a pitcher? Or are they more calm having the bases cleared?)
    3. Can we build things like effectiveness on the basepath into a stat like OPS (without venturing full-on into WAR)? For example, if you have a guy who can get from first to home on the average double, versus a big lumbering DH who can't do that, can we account for that? What about the expected stolen base addition each time the runner reaches base safely (with the expected reduction for getting caught stealing)?
  3. I would like to see swing-and-miss rates broken apart by misses due to velocity, and misses due to movement.
While baseball is certainly the most advanced major sport out there right now with respect to advanced metrics, there is still so much room for improvement. The more data we get, the more chances there are to make better sense out of that data.

It's an interesting idea, but how could you ever actually measure the bolded?

That's something you just need to clock once. Grab an average-aged MLB hitter, tell him to swing as soon as a light flickers (you don't even need a ball in this situation). Same way you judge response times in other arenas.

Ah, got it.

I guess that would work then.

Need anther vote, 1 or 2?

I personally feel that one will match better with both gray and white baseball pants

... I am going through such a terrible slump.

Started 2 tournaments ago. 2 first ab were 330 foot hr. Then I hit 2 a mile (in the. Air) but they ended up getting just to the track and getting caught.

Then I lost it. 7 outs in a row.

Carried over into yesterday tourbament, 3/9. I'm a 750 hitter.

Tonight it continued. 13 more swings. I really do not know what I'm doing at the plate at the moment.

Game one 3/6, 2 ab I just went OPPO and missed one, think I tried cutting 3 and got on twice there, just kept my hands high for the last one and flew out 280 feet away. It was a low pitch, don't know what else to do on that.

Game two just tried OPPO 3 ab and missed all three, pop ups.

Game 3 finally hit a shot, a hr to lcf. Hit the ball hard enough on the other two to no one could field it.

This absolutely fucking sucks. I'm scared to just hit normally because I'm worried it's gonna be a fly ball. I am missing the ball going OPPO which is typically great at evening my swing out. I don't have much experience cutting the ball and it's real easy to miss thay way too. I just am not barreling many balls, missing everything. It does not feel comfy at the plate, nothing feels natural. And I feel like if I swing natural it's gona be a 280 foot fly ball.

As Paul Harvey would say if he wasn't worm food - what's the rest of the story? I seem to recall you having better fortune at the plate recently.

Been hitting better but like this is still a problem. If I connect its a hr and there are restrictions everywhere. Even if you cut the ball, if it launches at over ten feet it can carry 240 and it's a hr (out). Yes, it's been going better, but I still don't have a solution.

When I go OPPO sometimes I bar my left arm and don't snap wrists. When it's straight, it goes right over infield. Maybe do that

Since no one posted in here for awhile I have always wondered...

Why did Ryan Garko fall apart after he left Cleveland? Like it felt like as soon as Cleveland traded that he didn't care to play any longer. (I believe he is one of the assistant coaches for the Angels after being a minor league coach)

I was thinking about all the guys that were in the Cleveland OF experimentally over the years since we are going to be putting out Domingo and Reyes out there this season to see if we can keep their bats in the lineup and I thought about how we had Garko and Santana out there lol

Monday team went 9-0 and beat the Tema that always beats us two times in the regular season.

Feeling good going into the championship game.

Our manager fucking sucks. We lost last season to them bc he was wasted. I made a request before the game that we don't get shit faced.

We were missing two really good players. I jumped at the opportunity to find us some ringers and he says "it woild be really cool if my friend could win with us so I'm asking him". Except his friend sucks. And he ran up on a ball in the outfield that cleared him by 20 feet. Also way out of position on another and gave up a hr.

The manager dropped a can of corn, and then moved UP on a girl I told him to give room for and she burned him by 10 feet for a hr..

He also bsists on pitching and no one really had anything to hit all night. So fucking bad.

He and his friend got in 1 time in 8 at bats.

We managed to tie it in the last inning and lost in extras. I'm sick of going all the way for the same thing tk keep happening. Ya it'd be really cool if his friend won too ui guess? But it would be cool to Win which we won't with him. Paradox. As a manager it's his job to put us in the best position to win and it lets the rest of the team down.

New jerseys, which are the best?
