The Guitar Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Idiot...you sold it after 6 weeks.

It was burnt to make one of the most glorious fires you'll ever see. The guitar crackled off "Seven Bridges Road" by itself as it smoldered into the night.

Digging this decaying old thread up to say that my beautiful boy lives!

After a year of collecting dust I finally Got around to sorting out my guitar, changed the five year old grody ass strings, scrubbed the fretboard, body and hardware to a nigh unrecognizable sheen, treated the entire neck with lemon oil over three times, put on the fattest, thickest d’addario EXL148 strings, tuned it to C standard and boy golly gee, the boy has never sounded better.

I’ve started trying to find songs that are set to C standard and while there isn’t a ton of variere I have finally gotten around to picking away at No One Knows by QOTSA and Freya by The Sword. It’s certainly not the most subtle of instruments anymore but holy shit is a great hard rock guitar.

Has anyone ever used the video game Rocksmith to learn guitar? I've never played a second in my life but I wanted to give learning a shot.

I know this is 4 years old but I used Rocksmith for a while. I took guitar lessons for years as a kid and really didn't pick up much. I picked up more playing Rocksmith for a couple weeks than I ever did with guitar lessons. I think the video game aspect pushed me more than my guitar teacher could.

Which one of those three got you hot and bothered? Greenwood?
All three.

A Purple Reprise Records Hendrix Double CD career retrospective was the first CD I ever bought(after formative years of doing the BMG/Columbia House tape racket). Fell in love and got a guitar for my 13th birthday. Spent hours trying to learn as much from that CD as possible. If I could go back in time to see any two artists in their primes, it'd be 68/69 Hendrix and 82-84 Prince.

Brian May/Queen is of course legendary and the company I work at made him a guitar strap that he's been using for the past 7-8 years now.

Greenwood/Radiohead: Saw them live at the Lakewood Civic Auditorium un the summer of 1997. Pretty incredible that they were playing what is essentially a High School auditorium, albeit one that clearly had some type of endowment from a wealthy former graduate. Epic show pulling from the first three albums. Hot summer night. Heat lightning flashing across the sky horizontally driving in to the area with my GF at the time. We had just had a big argument about the future. So the show was just epically cathartic. Super impressive was him playing/picking his arpeggiated lines on Street Spirit while at the same time using the headstock of the guitar to play single note keyboard lines.

Enjoy his soundtrack work as well.

We were on the brink of nuclear war and this post right here just made us bros for life

Prince, in that exact era, should be studied in college courses for his musical genius. Not just as a guitarist, as a drummer, keyboardist and composer.

My ex bought this for me for my birthday this year and I highly recommend you check it out for that exact era you’re talking about. I’m only halfway through it and my mind is blown listening to Purple Rain now that I have the context behind its inception.

Well played Miro

And Greenwood, he’s my greatest living guitarist since Prince passed.

Whenever I talk about him, I start off with Weird Fishes/Arpeggi from In Rainbows which he composed. There was a basement video recording that showed how layered that song is. Starts out with Ed as the first guitar, Thom is the second layer and then Jonny joins as the 3rd layer about 2 mins in. Together, because they’re all pretty dope, they sound like something from the Philharmonic Orchestra, but I reference this specifically because of the musicality of Greenwood throughout the video. Do you know how hard it is to play this over the top of two syncopated arpeggio progressions? It’s like watching Bron shoot 10 for 10 from half court with his eyes closed o_O

Ok, totally off topic and I’ll move this to another thread if we keep this going.

Brilliant post

We should move this convo to an off topic thread or DM hit in case you haven’t listened to it already, I can’t recommend the Questlove Supreme episode (I think it’s a two or three parter) where he interviews pretty much all the key players from the Revolution and that early run through Purple Rain. The insights on the creative process and legendary work ethic are incredible. If I can find the direct links, I’ll edit them in later
