For me the answer whether it works or not is to go for it there

The other team has 38. You haven’t stopped them once. Keep the ball in your hands and end the game

I was also all for the browns going for 2 if our second touchdown was under 2 minutes left in the game to potentially end it

What would be the reaction with this fan base if Stefanski made the same decision as everyone's darling, Dan Campbell, did above?

4th and 2 from the 26. Could kick the FG to take the lead with 1:46 left and Chargers with 1 timeout. Instead went for it to salt away the rest of the clock and kick the GW FG with time expiring.

It worked. So Campbell is lauded as having huge balls and playing to win the game. What if it didn't? What if Stefanski made that call? He'd be deemed a fool drunk on analytics and an Ivy League guy trying to be the smartest guy in the room.

It was unequivocally the right decision IMO.

If the Lions kick the go ahead field goal there, the odds seem extremely high given that it's a very high scoring game and both teams had marched up and down the field on each other all afternoon that the Chargers at the very least go down and tie the game with a field goal, if not win it outright with a touchdown.

The only way to guarantee victory was to simply not give the Chargers the ball back.

Same thing would apply to both imo. You get praised if it works and you get condemned if it doesn’t. In reality I think you should always go for it in that spot. There are always going to be fans who hate the coach that’s not a KS specific thing. There’s a segment of yinzer fans (not even a small one) that is convinced Tomlin holds the team back. I’m sure there’s lions fans that hate Campbell as well

If Cambell didnt get the first, same reaction. . It was a shootout and Det had all 3 timeouts, probably the right call to be honest. But thats one of those any coach gets flamed for if they dont make it. All coaches are on the hot seat, they are talking about firing Belicheck for Christ sake.
 
I watched most of the game again (I don't have any kind of film or anything, I just record). I think Stefanski had a terrific day. 1st half he called fairly well but we struggled more with execution (dropped passes, missed throws). 2nd half he devoured their defense. Here's a little breakdown (from my observation) of how things sort of went:
  • I think the Ravens were giving us some problems with man coverage. We tried to take advantage with some sideline shots (Moore comeback route, failed back shoulder fade, Tillman endzone throw, etc...) but couldn't execute on most
  • In the 2nd quarter Ravens almost inexplicably start running more cover 2 (probably because they got tired of us gashing them on the ground with Ford and I believe a few Watson scrambles. Cover 2 tends to work well for stopping the run.)
  • We hit them hard with that Cooper play up the middle (Watson looking the LBs off to the right) before the half. I'm 99% sure it was cover 2. Unfortunately only got a FG out of that
  • 2nd half is where Stefanski started waving his dick around. We attacked the middle of the field deep (weakness of Cover 2) on a couple of plays. Ravens tried cover 3 to defend the middle but we got started with quick out and stick routes (Moore, Cooper, Njoku). Then I think they tried disguising cover 2 as cover 3 and we connected on some more plays in the middle of the field (Akins, Moore)
  • Later they ran more man coverage and some cover 3 but Stefanski never stopped churning out runs and Watson using his legs, and also using delayed screens and flat routes which are killer for cover 3
The Ravens vaunted defense was trying EVERYTHING in that 2nd half. Watson only had 8 carries for about 40 yards but it really screwed with their desire to run man coverage (along with our RBs) which seemed to give us the most trouble at the time.

I give Watson big credit for execution, but Stefanski was a wizard that attacked their weaknesses rather maliciously.

I think as QB1 and HC get more familiar with each other our offense will trend upwards. My only concerns right now are the o-line (tackles in pass-blocking) and wide receivers aside from Coop. Moore had a solid game and Njoku was fantastic, but when we play a REALLY talented secondary the man coverage can give us problems and we'll be hoping Deshaun can work some magic with his legs.
 
Feels like after this game in particular, we have morphed completely into a shotgun team. Really encouraging to see how our offense is incorporating the inside zone runs and becoming more effective with it.

Totally agree. My real point was more about the narrative and bias that some refuse to acknowledge when it comes to Stefanski.

There seems to be a significant portion of Stefanski haters who also love Campbell. They both would make the same decision here in light of the analytics. But the reaction to each doing so would be much different IMO.
