This has to fall on the coach to some degree--

The Cleveland Browns have managed to lead the NFL in illegal formation penalties, so far this season, by a wide margin. This is a rare penalty call, which has been used only 28 times in the entire NFL season league-wide. That is, the average NFL team has been called for this penalty fewer than once for the entire season.
This seems like something that is so fundamentally obvious that it would be hard to mess up, yet the Browns have managed to mess it up five times this season, and twice against Denver. Last season, they tied for second in the NFL with three.
Are the Browns getting too complex with their formations, or are the players not paying sufficient attention to where they are supposed to line up? It seems incredible that this penalty could occur at the NFL level.

1000% falls on Pretty Boy Stefanski. Means they are getting too cute with the presnap stuff. With DinknDunk the new QB going forward they can't afford silly penalties like that. Need to tighten this up.

I think the pre-snap motion is a good idea, and I'm fine with a bit of a learning curve. Baker was better at noticing if things weren't right than is Keenum, but I hope Keenum cleans that up with more time.

Obviously those penalties should be minimized, but I don't believe reducing pre-snap motion is the right response.

This seems like a complex penalty that's hard to spot. I wonder how often it goes unnoticed by refs but with the Browns they're always looking for it because they commit it so often.

Or maybe the pre-snap motion draws attention to it

If the biggest criticism we have of our 2nd year NFL coach is that he tends to take his foot off the gas too much when we are up two scores, I will gladly take that.

Stefanski will learn from his mistakes.
I think we saw this in the Broncos gAme

that last drive was called as if we had to score. I was scared we were going to go ultra conservative, but that was a “it ends with us” drive

that is how we have to close out games. Just pretend like you need to score

The Browns should run motion as much as humanly possible. Every single play. Motion is very advantageous to the offense and they should absolutely under no circumstances do less of it because of a few penalties.

They just need to be better about getting set. That's it.

KS was cool and all, but he's behind NFL times. I see why he got criticism in Minnesota and I totally see why Stefon Diggs demanded out.

His horrible play calling adds up in a game like this, he got outcoached and outclassed by a guy that lost his own kicker and was calling a horrible game himself.

Browns have no margin for error going forward. Last year it felt like they didn't give a shit (but they give a shit), like they didn't get too hard pressed on things during a game, they came out gangbusting. This year they play not to lose, but lose.

He needs to be better. His play calling was poor in the first half, and then in the second half he was too conservative.

Most penalty yards in the league this year.

I'm done with this guy.

...This year they play not to lose, but lose.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees this. I would be interested to see what it would look like if he handed over play calling duties to Van Pelt.

I understand it’s way simpler to pin a loss on the head coach or the qb… but to watch that game and come up with Stefanski as the problem is a trip.

Its like we as fans think he coaches in a silo, and that there is literally no strategy deployed on behalf of the other team to take some things away from you. And when that happens, you tweak your gameplan and you look for execution from your highest value playmakers.

There had to be 8 drops today. Unbelievably difficult to look sharp as an offense and a play caller with that kind of handicap. Our pass catchers left another two touchdown drives on the field today. There is a reliability issue at that position and it will hold us back.

these takes are gonna age like sour cream aging outside for the entire summer

Cleveland finally gets an upper echelon NFL coach and he’s hated anyway.

If you hate Stefanski I’ve got news for you. He’s going to be here for a loooooooooong time so I’d get used to him partners.

Love love Stef. But he done turned the game on that 4th down that he goes for all year long. Steelers immediately scored. He knew it while he was calling the punt too.
