Heading to the theater now. STAR WARS IS BACK, BABY!

@col63onel I won't be able to see it til tomorrow, but tag me and give me a 1-10 rating as to what you thought, as well as how you rank it against the other films... Curious as to your thoughts.

Guy sitting next to me: “Is Darth Vader in this one”

His wife: “I think he died”

Hmmmmmm.....

Can’t say I loved it. Better than TFA. Certainly give them props for trying something new.

But my first reaction is...that was kinda boring

Pretty disappointed.

The plots surrounding The Resistance and Finn were pretty awful.

Jokes being lobbed at the audience every 5 minutes was tiring in TFA, they decided to pepper them in every more frequently in TLJ.

Kylo Ren is still a whiny preteen

Battle scene with Snoke and The Guards was pretty badass.

Who is Snoke?

Who are Rey’s parents?

It doesn’t matter. Thrown out the window. Years of worthless speculation.

The Rey stuff I am OK with. Not everyone has to have a "destiny". Doesn't matter who she was, but it matters what she does moving forward.

Snoke stuff is a little more frustrating. Turns out he was just a plot device.

Once again, I disagree with 99% of Star Wars opinions on this site.

I loved it.

EDIT: I honestly don’t know what some of you expect or create in your minds as an acceptable story line. They are creating something new; I’m totally okay with that.

I enjoyed it. Different story format, different scenes.

To the disappointment points above...those will be answered in time. They won' just give it all away in part 2. Plus looks to be a lot of love interests towards the end of the movie.

I am assuming we also were introduced to our new hero for the next trilogy.

Won't give away what? They answered all of the big questions.

Who is Snoke? Doesn't matter

Who is Rey? Just someone

Will Luke survive? No

Will Rey or Ren turn? No

I have zero problem with how they resolved any of them (well Snoke was a bit of a bust, but that's a minor complaint, because his scenes were still well done).

The plot was just boring. The entire Leia/Holdo/Poe/Finn/Rose storyline really served no purpose and was just a bunch of macguffins.

The sequels have just turned into psuedo-comedies with punchline after punchline. It's just tiring.

As far as the plot, I enjoyed the Rey storyline. But the rest was just boring. For 1 hr 45 the First Order was following the Resistance in a straight line, waiting for them to run out of gas. Finn and his new girl went on a detour (the gambling city was cool) and their plan was inconsequential. I guess we were introduced to a new character.

What was up with that shit with Leia flying through space?

I actually really enjoyed TFA. Yeah it was retread but I loved the nostalgia aspect of it, the opening scene was incredible, the characters were fresh, etc.

I'm optimistic for the next one, I think this one set the table well for it, but this one was a miss for me.

I see why TFA was polarizing. You kinda either liked it because it reminded you of A New Hope or you didn't like it bc was too much of a retread.

I just have a hard time having strong feelings about this, good or bad. It had undeniably cool parts and undeniably boring parts. It kinda is...just a movie.

Alright...full thoughts

- I am wondering if Disney is trying to do away with the opening crawl. Rogue Didn't have one, although it could've used one. This one had one...and it gave basically no info. Could've just said "TFA just ended".

- Opening space battle was tremendous. As good as the 3rd act of Rogue One. Tense, well paced, had some real stakes, the battle made sense. Awesome. Original trilogy level quality.

- The Rey-Luke storyline was pretty good. It's kinda what I expected...Luke is just a broken person from failing to restart the Jedi order, and Rey starts to realize that she has to forge her own, which was a nice arc they kept through the whole movie. The flashbacks seemed a little awkward, but overall that dynamic really worked.

- I loved the Rey-Ren interactions. That is a great and creative use of the Force. Ridley and Driver acted the shit out of those scenes. Rey closing the ramp on Ren in final scene was the perfect end for her in the movie.

- The reveals were satisfactory. Rey's parents are no one, Luke failed to stop Ren's turn, Snoke was a hurdle for Ren, Luke made his peace before he died. All of it was solid writing.

- Snoke's scenes were really well done. His character might not have lived up to the hype, but he certainly helped move Ren's character along. Ren killing him was a great moment, and the battle with the guards was great. This film literally had maybe the best space and lightsaber battle of the saga.

- I could go on, but everything involving Luke, Rey, Ren and Snoke was really good. Character arcs and motivations made sense, they were creative and well acted.

- The problem: the other half of the movie was just such a drag. Outside the opening battle, everything with Poe, Holdo, Leia, Rose and Finn was just pointless. All of their stories had no bearing on the plot. And problem with all of it is that it wasn't just a "side plot". It kept just killing the momentum of the good parts of the film. I'd be invested in the Rey-Ren story....then I had to watch Poe having the same argument with Leia and Holdo for the 17th time, or Finn and Rose chasing some macguffin that absolutely 0 impact on the story. By the time we got the climax, I was just tired of half the characters. If someone could put together and edit of just the Rey/Luke/Ren/Snoke stuff, it's be a great 80 minute movie. It just happened to be spliced with a mediocre episode of Star Trek.

- I do love the fact that Rian Johnson made a different type of Star Wars movie that still felt like it belonged in the Star Wars universe. It opens up a lot of doors for episode 9 and in the future. Johnson is a very creative filmmaker, and his new trilogy could be great. I just wish this movie wasn't dragged down by a terrible B plot.

I'm a bit conflicted on this one. Unlike TFA, in which I was giddy with excitement when I left the theater, I didn't feel that this time. Yet I did enjoy it and I felt it worthy of the franchise. Maybe we're just being so inundated with Star Wars lately that the movies are becoming less and less of a spectacle...

Have to say, though, I got that feeling from the moment it began. I just knew I wasn't going to feel super strongly about it, kinda like what @col63onel is saying, although I think I liked it more than him. And then the middle of the film just felt, well, pretty boring... And seriously, what the HELL was with Leia floating through space? :chuckle: Fuck, man, I cringed hard, although I cringed even harder during parts of that casino shit. Thought the film had some real lows...

...and some incredible highs. Snoke's death and the subsequent fight scene was awesome. No idea what the purpose was of his character; a plot device, as you guys said? Boy, that's a bit of a buzzkill, but whatever. The reveal on Rey's parents I was already spoiled on and I am 100% okay with it. Anyway, the highs: ah, yes. The end was fantastic with Luke and Kylo, although I am a bit disappointed that Luke is gone now. I thought Leia was toast in this movie, she lives? With Fisher having passed away? I'm...a bit confused as to how this will be handled.

Overall, no idea what I'd rate it. I'm not even sure if I like it more or less than TFA. Really conflicted on this one right now, but as always, I am happy to have been able to live to see Star Wars on the big screen once again. More thoughts tomorrow.
