The OF Conundrum

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So we've known that E. Rosario is our LF. It appears that Naylor is our RF, which doesn't have me overly excited TBH. Now CF comes down to Zimmer, Gamel, and maybe A. Rosario? I'd say it's a safe bet that Naylor will play 1B against LHP and Luplow will take his spot in RF. I don't think the OF is a conundrum anymore, it's just f'd up.

I waited a couple of days to consider this posting.. you're right about the quantrill progression not being there... questions remain.. Do you think the team might be better served with him as a multiple inning RP while figuring it out.. Good for the team?.. SP slot then goes to Allen?.. needing four SP's for the first three weeks.. helps this..

When Brantley developed his ability to get his long swing to hit elite speed.. along with his eye / pitch recognition.. he became exceptional at that point.. but you're right.. he didn't start that way..but learned.. Along with you... I'd love to see DJ/A-Ros/Merc.. develop along those lines.. they all have the physical skills to get there..

In re Quantrill...

What we've seen in Quantrill this spring goes against what he's done previously.

He's a ground ball pitcher who has never walked many batters.

43.7% GB and 2.4 BB/9.

This spring he has walked 8.2/9 and batters are getting the ball up in the air against him.

His 11 IP this spring looks like an aberration. Its the equivalent of pitching two bad games in a row.

He certainly does not look ready right now for the rotation, but over the long term, I dont think we should be worried.

Has Naylor played 1B at all in ST?

I'd like to state publicly that I'm rooting hard for Amed to become a good CFer. For no other reason than the fact that his attitude has been exemplary. If he can establish some good defensive value somewhere then I think that will give him some peace and secure his career.

I agree with CD......and would extend that to both Jake Bauers and Bobby Bradley, especially BB. Why especially him? because from what I can tell, his attitude, at least publicly has been the same and he's continued to work hard at his craft. Jake has been resistant. Which creates doubt in me as to why the Indians FO is so tied to him.

I think A Rosario can become an above average CF. It just takes time and experience. I don't know how much time he can get in CF this season. But if he plays winter ball everyday in CF, and gets good coaching, he should do well. Good bat.

As this is a transition year for the Indians.. regular time in CF is more than probable.. His bat is very good and should continue to be productive.. regardless of where he plays, defensively..

It's trial by fire/do or die in centerfield for A.Rosario. They wouldn't be doing this now if there wasn't a legitimate plan to have him start there in the major leagues on Opening day. It may not be pretty, but it may surprise. I myself sort of like this new layer of unknowns, routine fly balls to center have never been so exciting.

They could decide to pull the plug on this experiment I guess, but if they do... You can almost count on someone (likely A.Rosario himself) being traded as a result. IMO the tribe would rather salary dump A.Rosario then pay him to be the utility guy on a team that shouldn't have much need for one. Maybe you sub him in for Gimenez against lefties, that is about it.

It's CF or bust.

I actually agree with you here Criz. If he doesn't work out in CF there is little use for him on this roster. I just hope they don't get in a hurry to decide that he isn't going to cut the CF mustard. Some patience here is owed IMO.

He's getting a long leash.

This won't be a repeat of the doomed attempt to move Carlos back to 3rd. They'll at least make it to some real ML games with A.R in center and I believe he will succeed. Might end up the worst CF in MLB in 2021, but I don't think so. As we move into summer I think he will have found himself and may even turn into an asset on both sides of the ball.

I hope you're right on every account.

If you had the opportunity to watch him today.. as a comparison to the guy who was awkwardly attempting to reach fly balls while extending his glove side arm outward.. to today where he was under the ball or behind the ball in a ready position to throw.. then you can see he has a chance to be acceptable in CF.. He even made an excellent read of a ball off the bat forward and to his left on a liner that he caught moving as quickly as anyone.. While not a finished product, he's making progress.. oh.. and he continues to hit at a rate that makes any CF'er the tribe has had since Grady look like a banjo hitter....

..baby steps.. but ten more days until opening day..

He definitely looked more comfortable out there today, and did get a good read on that play (pretty sure I know which one you are talking about - ended an inning) though the catch itself wasn't quite picture perfect. Naylor looked like he was ribbing him a bit and everyone was laughing, so gotta like that.
