The RGIII Conundrum

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Washington is like one of the only NFL teams that makes us look like a model of good management and smart decisions.

I agree. RG3 needs to be in a more stable environment, in my opinion. Jay Gruden has his job on the line, which does not co-exist well with the level of development and attention RG3 needs to fit in the league.

Going to be a tough pill to swallow for ownership, but the RG3-Washington relationship seems to be beyond repair. With his salary situation, it's hard to see Washington getting anything of value for him. Especially when an injury this season puts you on the hook for 16 million next year.

Teams would line up to sign him if he is cut. If he has a brain left, he goes somewhere with an established offense and mediocre starter to be the backup, learn, and become fan favorite no. 1 (which all backup QBs are).

Point is, teams would line up to give him a chance in this scenario. Simply having a clear path here in Cleveland would not be enough. I don't think he would come cheaply, and we still don't know what we would get. I think he isn't nearly as bad of a QB as he has been, but i just don't think he has the durability.

The only thing we could sell him on is our apparent studly O-line. I'm not exactly sure, if I were RGIII, I would want to come play for the Browns.

It would be an awesome backup QB controversy. Half the fans chanting Johnny, the other half chanting RG3 after every incomplete pass by McCown. :chuckle:

I never liked him, but I would take. That's how desperate I am at this point. He has talent, a lot of his problems could be fixed. I'm not saying he's going to become the pro-bowl QB some proclaimed him to be, but Washington was a fucking disaster situation.

Some of it he brought on himself, no doubt, but they almost went out of their way to dump more gasoline on him.

There's a whole other level to why RGIII has been in a constant state of stumbling since his injury rookie year. This is from his wiki page:

Before the start of his rookie season with Washington, Griffin had signed a number of endorsement deals from companies such as Adidas, Castrol Motor Oil, EA Sports, EvoShield, Gatorade, Nissan, and Subway. According to ESPN's Dollars blog, Griffin had "earned more than any other rookie in NFL history before throwing his first regular-season pass," largely as a result of endorsements.[

He has been trying to make a lot of people happy because of those endorsements, and that meant rushing back from injuries. I don't just put the blame on Washington, because those outside endorsement pressures aren't going away with his next team.

Well, maybe his next team's O-line can help him stay healthy so he can earn those endorsement monies.

If he gets traded, his gigantic 2016 salary is fully guaranteed for injury. Why would teams risk that when they could just wait for Washington to get rid of him, then swoop in and sign him to a cheaper deal?
Because then you have to compete with every other team who is waiting to do the same.

I would just trade a 6th/7th round pick for him. Salary cap is the least of our worries over the next two years. It is better than trying to save cash and he ends up going elsewhere.

RG3 would immediately be the best QB on our roster by a very wide margin. If he could stay healthy we are a playoff team with him.

And to everyone dogging the Redskins saying how smart we were, the Redskins made the playoffs his rookie year. We ended up with a handfull of busts. Sure we are in better position now, but that has nothing to do with the picks we saved. We were already built better than Washington, and have recently had some UDFA talent/later round picks help fill us out. But after what I've been watching since 1999 I would have gladly taken a ROY paired with an 11-5 season.

Would't he need clearance from the team doctors anyway? What do the Redskins care what his endorsements are?

Players want to play. They don't want to be off the field (most of them). This isn't unique to endorsement deals, and it is the responsibility of the team doctors to look out for the player's best interest. Because a lot of athletes will want to go no matter what (ex. Love saying he was going to play game 1 of the Chicago series). So the blame falls on those who cleared him prematurely. Unless RG3 was lying through the procedures (not familiar with the procedures to rehab a knee), and in that case he is just being wreckless and stupid.

My name isn't Robert Griffin. Nor is it Washington owner Daniel Snyder or Addidas owner Stan Smith. I'm just the messenger telling you what everyone saw at the beginning of the 2013 season. He rushed back when his knee wasn't ready. Since then, his rushing attempts are being cut in half in each season, because he isn't a very durable player and his speed isn't improving without proper rehab and rest. He needs to learn, much like Manziel needed to learn, how to operate from the pocket. After succeeding in college without learning to operate from the pocket, bad habits form.

I doubt anyone will be willing to give up anything at all for him unless he gave the ok to renegotiating his contract with his new team.

Fact is, his guaranteed salary in case of an injury makes him almost unplayable given his extensive injury history.

I think we'd need to change our entire offense to get the most out of RG3. In his rookie year, the Redskins ran Baylor's offense the entire season. RG3 gets hurt in the last game, not sure if the injury is even relevant anymore considering the success of knee reconstructions these days, but Shanahan then switches back to a pro style offense the following season and it's been downhill ever since. I suppose we could just run a college offense for both Johnny and RG3..... just skeptical that either of them could run an actual NFL offense.

A college offense beats pro quarterbacks into a hobbled pulp. That's why Kaepernick, Vick, Tyrod Taylor, Cam Newton, RG3, and other running quarterbacks are trying like crazy to run less and less in the regular season... and often end up on the IR for most of the season. There are decades of proof that hard-hitting NFL defenders end running QBs careers if they can't throw from the pocket.

Oh for sure, I wasn't really serious but I figured someone would suggest it anyways. My point was that, like Johnny, RG3 hasn't shown any ability to run a pro-style offense. He's an incredibly talented individual but he's a HUGE project that comes with a lot of hype.

Honestly, I haven't liked our offensive schemes since DA left town. I liked the theory of Norv's vertical offense but we didn't have the personnel.

Given the fact he has a 16M guarantee for next season, I most certainly wouldn't trade for him.

Now if he hits the FA market, I hope we're the first team to call.
