The Rise of Skywalker spoilers thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I wish they would just fucking admit that they are following the Expanded Universe with new names. Jacen and Jaina. Rey comes outa nowhere with no Skywalker bloodlines............Right. She is WAY fucking more powerful than Luke was at that stage. Snoke??? Fuck you, went out like a bitch.
Luke went out on his own terms, realized the mistakes he made, tried his best to make up for them. Um.......the resistance is down to like 25 fucking people............What??? So all that Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie fought for, Wedge, Biggs, Admiral Akbar, the entire Rebel Alliance.............they are down to the last 25 or so people. And we are to believe that they are gonna save the Galaxy from the evil Empire. LOL. Gimmie a fucking break.
I liked the movie, but it hit me as more of a mythology than a story I could believe. And maybe that's what its supposed to do............

Alright...full thoughts

- I am wondering if Disney is trying to do away with the opening crawl. Rogue Didn't have one, although it could've used one. This one had one...and it gave basically no info. Could've just said "TFA just ended".

- Opening space battle was tremendous. As good as the 3rd act of Rogue One. Tense, well paced, had some real stakes, the battle made sense. Awesome. Original trilogy level quality.

- The Rey-Luke storyline was pretty good. It's kinda what I expected...Luke is just a broken person from failing to restart the Jedi order, and Rey starts to realize that she has to forge her own, which was a nice arc they kept through the whole movie. The flashbacks seemed a little awkward, but overall that dynamic really worked.

- I loved the Rey-Ren interactions. That is a great and creative use of the Force. Ridley and Driver acted the shit out of those scenes. Rey closing the ramp on Ren in final scene was the perfect end for her in the movie.

- The reveals were satisfactory. Rey's parents are no one, Luke failed to stop Ren's turn, Snoke was a hurdle for Ren, Luke made his peace before he died. All of it was solid writing.

- Snoke's scenes were really well done. His character might not have lived up to the hype, but he certainly helped move Ren's character along. Ren killing him was a great moment, and the battle with the guards was great. This film literally had maybe the best space and lightsaber battle of the saga.

- I could go on, but everything involving Luke, Rey, Ren and Snoke was really good. Character arcs and motivations made sense, they were creative and well acted.

- The problem: the other half of the movie was just such a drag. Outside the opening battle, everything with Poe, Holdo, Leia, Rose and Finn was just pointless. All of their stories had no bearing on the plot. And problem with all of it is that it wasn't just a "side plot". It kept just killing the momentum of the good parts of the film. I'd be invested in the Rey-Ren story....then I had to watch Poe having the same argument with Leia and Holdo for the 17th time, or Finn and Rose chasing some macguffin that absolutely 0 impact on the story. By the time we got the climax, I was just tired of half the characters. If someone could put together and edit of just the Rey/Luke/Ren/Snoke stuff, it's be a great 80 minute movie. It just happened to be spliced with a mediocre episode of Star Trek.

- I do love the fact that Rian Johnson made a different type of Star Wars movie that still felt like it belonged in the Star Wars universe. It opens up a lot of doors for episode 9 and in the future. Johnson is a very creative filmmaker, and his new trilogy could be great. I just wish this movie wasn't dragged down by a terrible B plot.

I agree with pretty much all of this, although again I think I liked it more than you.

Did the whole Space Fleet plot feel familiar to any other Battlestar Galactica fans, by the way? :chuckle:

I liked it. The storyline was a bit predictable. You could easily see how things were probably going to play out like 2 or 3 scenes ahead. But I don't mind the build up of the story. It actually built a bit of a story that flowed together, didn't feel as thrown together as TFA.

I really love Rey's theme though man, great song. A couple moments made me a bit emotional. R2 showing Luke the original projection of Leia had me tearing up. That moment probably wasn't meant to do that, maybe it's just me. But it got me. And the other, being when Luke and Leia met again.

Ok sorry sorry, one LAST thing I promise:

The humor. Everyone saying this thing is even more riddled with humor and comical shit than TFA. Um, no? I disagree. It was there but I don't think it was at the forefront at all... That was not a complaint of mine at all.

Thought Hamill acted the shit out of this film. Was awesome to see Luke Skywalker one last time, though I do wish we got to see him go ham on some fools.

I'd be shocked if he isn't a Force ghost in 9.

Another great point in the movie was Lukes final scene. Remember one of the iconic scenes in ANH was Luke in the desert, and the twin Suns behind him...............when I saw the twin suns in TLJ as Luke is getting up from his Force projection mind fuck of Kylo Ren..............I knew Luke was done.

I'd be shocked if he isn't a Force ghost in 9.

True. But it...it just isn't the same.

Was good to see Yoda too.

Oh and the ship going full hyperspace through the Imperial ship was badass.

Yes, but why didn't she do that the minute the transports were away? She had already decided she was going to sacrifice herself. Why wait till they shoot down half the transports?

My main complaint was that they toyed with the idea of Rey or Kylo turning the entire movie, and even in the trailers, etc. And then neither of them do? That was the big let down for me.

That isn't to say they handled it wrong necessarily, but that would make things a lot more interesting to me. I figured Rey wouldn't turn, for the kids. Kylo, I thought there might be a chance but redeeming him after killing Han was low. Rey and Kylo teaming up for a full movie vs. Snoke for the finale would have been epic. But we will see what they have planned for the end. It might be better. I don't know if the dimwit of Kylo is that scary of a final threat tbh. The movie makes him look stupid over and over again.

And I'm not 100% sure still that Rey's parents are who they say. It might be a throw off. One of the final twists might end up being Rey's parents.

The Yoda appearance was cool. I don't know, the more I think of it, it was very satisfactory. They just didn't take any big risks it felt like. Going back to being predictable. So we can say they didn't mess it up, but they could have elevated it much higher and made it more interesting if they would have took some bigger risks I think.

And who woulda guessed a Yoda appearance??? Oh and Admiral Akbar went out like a bitch. He should been the one to hyper drive blast that Dreadnought.

FUCK! Totally agree! That woulda been tits.

Silly Snoke. Will these dark-siders ever not just toy with their prey?

How did he not notice the saber moving next to him? He had some serious power. A shame that like a proton torpedo, Snoke blazed through the heavens and was gone. He served his purpose and that was it.

I'd be shocked if he isn't a Force ghost in 9.

I think he will be more than a ghost.

Some sort of a more powerful entity. Yoda demonstrated that he was more powerful than the typical ghost could interact with corporeal world. I wager Luke will be like the Bendu from Rebels. Massively powerful physical manifestation of the Force.

Does the kid at the end have any significance character wise? Or is it just a nice ending to show hope is back in the galaxy. He seemed to have the force unless that was my imagination.

Maybe the hope coming back means more Jedi will start popping up. Maybe they start another Jedi Academy. I don't know what they can do with the last episode other than a Rey vs Kylo battle where Rey wins. I mean, realistically, 20 people aren't going to take down the whole First Order. With Kylo in control, maybe that is possible though. Kylo as the final big threat is just bad. Unless they bring Snoke back from the dead, I don't know what they can do.

What questions/suspense is left for the final episode? Honestly asking. Not sure what to look forward to or what they can do besides the obvious.

He will probably be, by last count, the Third Chosen-One. They'll keep picking one until one actually full-fills the prophecy.
