The Travel Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My parents went in Feb 2020; and they just got back last week from Honduras, Costa Maya. They had to do those too more recently. I haven't gone yet, actually have never been on a cruise but thinking about going soon, good deals.

One thing is don't get is....Why would it be crazy to live life? If you think being fully vaxxed and wearing a mask protects you, why would it be crazy to go?
I'm not worried about getting gravely ill since we're both vaxxed. I'm worried about somehow showing symptoms, testing positive, and having to be couped up in a tiny cabin for any amount of time.

The cruise was great. There were no issues regarding Covid, and there were no restrictions regarding activities.

It was also Spring Break and a shitload of smoking hot ladies were there in skimpy bikinis. The style now is to pretty much show your entire ass. I can get behind this trend.

CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's island resort, was awesome. They had lots of things there for all sorts of crowds. My daughter and I did the water park, and it was very nice. So many steps though! Great slides for all levels of thrill-seekers.

Hey all!

Wondering if anyone here has ever done any solo travel around Europe? I need advice on how much to budget, how much cash to keep on me and bring, how to navigate the language barrier and what to do to ensure I'm safe when abroad in June.

Planning on the following:

Cousin has a wedding in Austria - So the trip will start there.

Austria --> Venice --> Florence --> Amalfi Coast (All of this will be about 1.5 weeks where I will be with my extended family and a group)

We will then split and I will be solo and plan the following:

Rome--> Santorini --> Ibiza --> Barcelona --> Cleveland (This will be about 1 week worth of time)

Would love any and all advice people can provide!

Nice..

I carry very little cash if I am in big cities. I have a credit card that does not charge an exchange fee, and a debit card. So I can get cash at the atm if need be.. harder in rural towns.. also if you carry a pack, keep your expensive stuff inaccessible from the outside pockets..Some Italians are very good theives. You won't even know they hit you.. zipper pockets keep your phone and wallet in front pockets. Wear sturdy material, because they will cut the bottom of the pocket out while you are walking along.. Language is not a problem in the big cities.. but the locals will cut you a breaking you at least try to learn a few phrases BEFORE you step on the plane..

In Venice the boats work like the subway.. take it to Lido and rent a bike. Ride to the beach.. Anything you want to see in Italy, reserve early. You need reservations to see museums and they are often booked way in advance.. if you want to climb the tower in the Duomo book it ahead..

Stay in air bnb , ( super hosts with good ratings) it is way better experience..

Take a guided tour in Rome on an e-bike. 3 hours will barely be enough.. it's an awesome experience.

Spend a day ( and a night ) in Tivoli!

Drink lots of water. Italy is hot. Take a hat.. and not a damn baseball cap.

Walking around alone is a bad idea. There are very sophisticated panhandlers, and in some areas you can wander into a crowd of them. They can make it difficult for you. If you can arrange to meet up with friends, that's a better plan.. there are these online language web sites where local speakers help you learn.. might be a way to get to know someone a little.. you can ask your airbnb hosts for tips about stuff also.. they are usually pretty helpful..

And be prepared to walk... a lot. Uber is expensive. Subway in Rome is not useful. Rome is seven cities built one upon the other. So the subway underground is not practical around the old city.. Wear sturdy shoes. You will be walking on cobblestones.. I wore keenes hiking low tops..

There are two dinner times. One around 5 for the tourist food like pizza, and the other after7 for actual Italian food.. you have to time it, because lunch is available for a window and if you miss it, you go hungry.
They serve a lot of food. My wife and I split a lot, so that helped.

Try to have some Bulgheri wine.. Yum!

Trains are good, but you can get fleeced, someone will greet you when you come in and show you how to manage the trains.. then expect to be paid. There are actual free greeters, but they are always wearing uniforms.. buy the air-conditioned seat, you won't regret it.

Renting a car in Italy was a terrible idea. Super expensive, parking is a nightmare, you can't see shit from the highway.. it looks like it might be a pretty drive down the coast from Venice, but it's just a concrete view.. Take the train..

Spain was super cheap when I was there last.. language is more of a problem than Italy, but that may have been because I was in a smaller city. (San Luca de Barramedos , I think.. where columbus and Magellan set sail from)

Any way, relax and have fun..

Rocks..

Insanely helpful. Thank you!

I'm on a solo driving tour of the USA. Started in Philly, watched the disaster Monday Night from Cleveland with my brother. Sat down at the chop house in Cheyenne WY just now and on one of the six sports screens is Bernie Kosar & the U vs Frank Reich & the Terps.

Meanwhile my wifeback in Philly, good woman that she is, took my Mom for a medical appointment & decided to go to Parx Casino where frequent players could get a free Eagles T Shirt. Unfortunately they were out of her size. So she gets a seat at the only Mississippi Stud table (where seats are never available) and is up $60 after two hands.

Next hand dealer turns up K & J of hearts and everyone with the side bet down is hoping for Q hearts. Sure enough that card comes up and that's another win for her.

The Indian dude at her table is smirking and says "wait till you see my two cards."

He turns over A & 10 of hearts.

Wins about $200,000. Announces to the rest of the table (4) that he's giving them each $5,000. She got the chips but decided to wait for his to finish paperwork so she could thank him again.

He comes out, she thanks him and he gives her another $200 "for taxes".

So that's two improbable events. These things happen in threes. I'm right next to nuclear missiles so I hope the Russkis don't launch.
