The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
reboot or reimagining

Right, what I thought going in.

If you've beaten it, you've seen the ending cutscenes that line up perfectly with Price forming Task Force 141 with Ghost, Soap, and Gaz turns out to be Garrick who we played as for half the game, unbeknownst to us.

Plus Kamarov, al-Asad, and Zakaev references at the end.

edit: Looked up Gaz from the OG, and seeing as he was a typical British white dude I'm guessing we're leaning on the reboot side here.

Lines this game up perfectly as a prequel to the original trilogy.

But, it could be that, AND a reboot...same characters, same start to their story, totally different upcoming storyline.

Anyone got a solid argument for buying The Outer Workds now?

or should I wait on it and just go for Death Stranding in 1.5 weeks at this point?

If you’re able to, I would game pass it, see if you like it, and if not, just go for DS next week. That way you’re only short a couple bucks as opposed to the price of a full game.

ETA: I’ve heard the game is incredible and everything Fallout 76 should have been, FWIW.

Do you like Fallout? Specifically, Fallout: New Vegas? Because this is basically that but in a unique world.

It's also got good gunplay, unlike the Fallout games. The combat feels more like Borderlands, with numbers popping up above enemies as you shoot them. It's got some KOTOR / Mass Effect in it as well, as you can bring companions along with you (I know you could do this in Fallout but it rarely mattered who you brought and they were usually more annoying than anything) that will occasionally interact with characters you are conversing with if they have a prior relationship or have something they want to interject with.

I just finished up with the planet you start on (although presumably I will be back later for new quests) and I'm loving the game. It feels like loading up a game of Fallout or Elder Scrolls for the first time.

Sounds awesome. I felt like I was getting some ME vibes from the very limited amount of gameplay I’ve seen so far.

Question is, how gripping has the story been so far for you?

I would say it's very much like Fallout and Elder Scrolls in that the main story exists more to facilitate the exploration and world-building that happens as you interact with all the different settlements and help to solve their individual problems. That being said, the actual writing is enjoyable and witty and elicits a laugh out loud from time to time. But if you're wanting to play this game for its epic story, you'll probably be disappointed.

Like I said, this is Fallout or Elder Scrolls. If you like Fallout, you will definitely like this.

Death stranding is so close

Pretty much the reason I think I have to hold out on The Outer Worlds right now.

If I pick it up I won’t make it through it in time for Death Stranding and I know when that comes out it’s where all my time will be devoted. Would be hard to jump back into a game after going through a whole story.

CANT. WAIT.

Death Stranding just does nothing for me. I’ve outgrown Kojima’s funky weird ass stories.

If it gets raves I’ll be forced to peep it at least a little though.

Outer Worlds was my most anticipated game of this year and it's living up to the hype so far. Visually it's nothing special, but it scratches that Fallout itch and I love me some Fallout.

I got the outer worlds. Haven't played much yet. But to me it seems like a strange blend of Fallout/Mass Effect/KOTOR/Borderlands. Its got fallouts combat, Mass Effect and KOTOR like companion system/Vending Machines and humor that seem borderlandsesqe. Its really interesting so far. Can't comment on gun play though. I always play as a Melee character in Fallout type games.

I have about 12 hours into The Outer Worlds

Definitely feels a lot like Fallout. The writing is great. I've been on 3 different planets now and they have their own intricacies from a "societal" standpoint.

My biggest complaint is the story hasn't quite grabbed a hold of me yet. I feel like I'm just mindlessly carrying out tasks for people without really thinking or caring. I felt like in Fallout 4 at least, your character had a greater purpose or I felt more invested in the story. The NPCs you interact with are boring and emotionless. You can bring 2 companions with you and they seem to have depth to them, especially the first one you meet, Parvati

Enjoying it just fine, it just hasn't hooked me yet like Fallout has.

Parvati and her little asexual lesbian shit already wore on me. I do love me some Ellie. Still have to get the last companion, that's coming today.

Literally have 2 playthroughs going. 1 where I'm a decent person. 1 where I just walk into towns and start shooting.

Ellie is the one I do not have yet. I have the robot, Felix, and Nyorka (just picked her up) back on my ship- I haven't yet explored with them in my party.
