The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I finished Ragnarok the other day.

I was not expecting the emotional roller coaster ride that it took me on for the last few hours of the game.

It’s just an overall fantastic experience that improves upon its predecessor (which is an all-time game itself) in every way.

Got a new gaming PC today. I got it mostly for Vicky 3 because I'm a Paradox whore, but I would be lying if that XCOM/Marvel game isn't an added bonus.

I built mine on Sunday and treated myself to Deathloop. Game is fantastic. It's like an insane blend of Dishonored, No One Lives Forever, BioShock, and Groundhog Day. It's also gorgeous.

It came free with my video card so no buying for me at all.
Nice!

Runs and looks amazing on my PS5 in performance mode.

Not incredibly far into it yet, but it plays more action than survival horror to me, though there are plenty of jump scares. Feels closer to Dead Space 3 than Dead Space 1, if we’re making comparisons.

Not impressed by the reviews so far for Callisto. I’ll buy at a deep discount next black friday, if I’m bored.

Are ps5s hard to find or not? I see one on ebay for 550. Are these not too be trusted unless you get it from Gamestop?

Played the first half hour or so of The Callisto Protocol. Feels a lot like Dead Space, unsurprisingly. It runs pretty well for the most part. Occasionally transitioning to a new area will be accompanied by a little slowdown, but thanks to some reviews I read before booting up for the first time, I found that you can mitigate some of the performance issues by turning off V-Sync and motion blur.

Game looks gorgeous and has some of the best-looking character models I've seen, particularly the main characters. I've only fought maybe ten or fifteen enemies thus far, as the bulk of the first half hour is setting up how your character ends up in prison, but the combat takes some getting used to. The way you dodge by holding down A or D (I'm playing with mouse and keyboard) isn't very intuitive, and I've gotten hit a bunch of times where I feel like I shouldn't have. I imagine it'll become easier over time, though. The combat has some nice weight to it.

My only death so far was when I walked up to a security robot just to see what would happen. I got lit the fuck up is what happened. It was hilariously over the top.

My impressions after a couple hours with The Callisto Protocol (PS5):

- This is visually probably the best game I've ever seen. Character models, enemy design, environment, lighting, shadows, character animations, everything.
- The audio is also top notch, and in my opinion, it is what really sets the tension in the atmosphere, rather than the lighting and shadows (although those are certainly great). Many times, you're going to hear an enemy before you see them, which makes the zoomed in third person camera (basically the same as Dead Space) even more stressful. The voice acting has been great, too.
- The game is tense, and there are jump scares galore, even from the opening cinematic. That being said... I expected the game to be scarier. Thus far, it doesn't really feel that way, at least to me personally. Again, since this is widely seen as the spiritual successor to Dead Space, it feels closer to 3 than 1. Of course, that could change as I progress further into the game.
- Combat takes a little getting used to, especially the dodging mechanics. As this is a survival horror game, it's not surprising that it can feel a little bit cumbersome and slow by design, in order to drive up those levels of stress.
- Speaking of combat, the enemies in this game hit pretty hard - even the regular, garden variety mutants. Depending on the difficulty you're playing at, don't be surprised if you die a few times within those first couple hours. Difficulty only seems to affect the amount of damage you do and the amount of damage enemies deal, not enemy AI or placement.
- Buckets and buckets of gore and gratuitous violence, right from the jump.

8/10 feels about right for this one. Overall, I'm having a great time with it. If you were a fan of Dead Space, I recommend it.

Darktide is a hell of a lot of fun. I got popped with a positive covid test yesterday, so I've had nothing but time today and spent a couple of hours playing it, and also got through another day in Deathloop. Darktide just manages to scratch that itch that Vermintide 2 did, and the Left 4 Dead games before it (I never played the first Vermintide). There's just something inherently satisfying about facing off against hundreds of mindless zombies rushing toward you and just tearing right through them with an axe. I'm playing as a Zealot too, and he's constantly yelling insane shit while I'm slaughtering hordes of heretics.

The game is also gorgeous. I'm running it on all high settings and still getting about 80-90 FPS with zero slowdown.

I really love the way the game gets your heart pumping. There aren't a lot of games where, after a twenty minute session, I feel exhilerated. It's just non-stop action with occasional moments of absolute insanity. The game isn't scary, just intense, much like L4D could be during those horde attack sequences.

Between this and The Callisto Protocol, I'm fixing to spend a whole lot of time the next few days exploring poorly lit sci-fi corridors filled with horrifying monsters.

Is the camera speed all wonky?

The Marvel game that came out recently was absolute death, and I couldn’t adjust to make it playable.

Anyway- Pokémon. Three more hours.
How'd you like Pokémon SV?
