The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Really digging Control so far. I'm a couple of hours in. It's got a great Twin Peaks / X-Files vibe, and while the visuals are nowhere near as good as God of War or Death Stranding, the game makes up for it with an insanely cool destruction engine. You can really do some damage to the environments and it looks pretty spectacular. It's also really cool when the room around you shifts as the Oldest House (the building where, as far as I know, the entire game takes place) changes things.

The combat is a ton of fun. You pretty quickly unlock your push ability, which is essentially telekinesis. You can grab just about anything in the environment and use it as a highly destructive "bullet" to fire at enemies. There's only one gun, the Service Weapon (in a nice bit of lore, you find a document that says that, in the past, this gun may have been other mythical weapons that choose their bearer like Mjolnir and Excalibur), but you slowly unlock varying modes. As of now, I've got the default pistol mode and also a shotgun mode.

The game can be a bit unforgiving at times, and doesn't always explain itself particularly well. I walked into a room at one point and quickly discovered that it was a fall to my death, which threw me back to the previous fast travel point, about a two minute walk away from the point of death. I also walked into a room early on that contained a fight I apparently was not ready for and subsequently had my ass handed to me. The game doesn't explain the upgrade systems particularly well either. I went to YouTube and watched a few vids that enlightened me on exactly how some of the game's systems worked and that helped immensely.

I'm still pretty early and don't really have much of a clue as to what is going on, but the story is intriguing and you can find tons of collectibles that give a tiny bit of insight into how this world works. I definitely intend to see this one through.

Strangely, this is the third straight third person Metroidvania game I have played. I'd consider Fallen Order and God of War to fall into the same genre, although this one is a third person shooter rather than melee-focused like the other two.

Got in this weird mood and watched like two hours of space/cosmos videos. Now I want to play some space shit but there’s not much out there.

May reinstall Stellaris.

Just finished Bioshock Infinite, fantastic story and really enjoyable game. Thought there would be tougher enemies. It's pretty much a wrap once you get the shield vigor and any combo of hand cannon/sniper rifle/shotgun fully upgraded.

I wanna get the DLC and play the first two, but I have so many unfinished games in my library. May just pick up Skyrim or Deus Ex again

The games get progressively better from a combat perspective with each installment. The first game is pretty much crap as far as combat goes. The second isn't great, but a marked improvement. The third is pretty good, although I'd highly recommend using a controller for at least the second and the third. Don't really remember how the first one controlled, just that it wasn't particularly fun but told a decent story.

Honestly, I'd probably just recommend watching recap vids of the first two games and then skipping straight to the third. The third is the one that put the series, and CD Projekt Red, on the map.

It's worth noting that the writing gets progressively better as well. The third game has some of the absolute best writing in video games. I think it's a combination of the developers getting more talented over time and also the translations getting better.

I’d argue that Witcher 2 is a very very good game that can stand alone, although still is nowhere near Witcher 3. I’d give it a 9.0+ in my book, the storyline is still awesome and the branching storylines are still very well done. Combat is fine, not excellent but it didn’t make me quit in frustration. They also had some excellent characters and plot lines throughout. Loved Letho, Saskia, Iorveth/Roche, Triss, etc.

Honestly might be. The original is kinda rough around the edges at this point though.

As rough as the gameplay sort of is, the story is just so worth it in ME1.

My god do I want a remaster of that trilogy so bad though.

I just did an ME runthrough from 1 to Andromeda this summer. Realized how many achievements I never bothered getting back in the day. Not bothering to get them all in ME1 tho, don't feel like another 6 playthroughs.

I just want to stab whoever is in charge of their social media. It's been months of ME related posts on twitter/facebook. For a game series that was shelved "indefinitely" years ago. I already know I'm not going to get Andromeda 2 (I'd be happy with the fucking Quarian Ark DLC we were supposed to get). We all know the Shepard story is dead and over.

I figure at this point, the only thing all these ME posts are to keep the hype built for a remaster on the newest consoles.

I’ve put in about 50+ hours between Sword and Shield.

incredible.

My kid broke the speakers on my switch and I've been too lazy to send it out for warranty. So at this point, I'm just waiting to play the Temtem beta on Steam.

Temtem looks like such a huge knockoff. I know that's what its suppose to be. But they didn't even try to hide it. Let me know if its any good.

Look, you gotta know what you're getting into. I'm not big into the 4X games by Paradox (Europa Universalis, Stellaris, Hearts of Iron, Crusader Kings, you know all of those) and I had actually never tried one until I bought Stellaris. Went balls deep, grabbed all the DLC I could, and jumped in.

Shit is fucking overwhelming, absurd amounts of tooltips on top of tooltips on top of tooltips on top of...you get the idea. Prepare to scour the internet for tutorials and tips if you're not familiar with these types.

That said I eat up space exploration shit so I really like the game. I admit I got overwhelmed after a bit and forgot about it and eventually uninstalled. But I knew I'd come back to it at some point. Might be soon. You just gotta be ready to learn and restart your game a bunch of times before knowing what you're doing. If you want a space empire builder, this is probably it. There's so many neat stories that can happen throughout your game too. You don't even have to be hardcore/trying to win to enjoy the game.

Sounds like exactly what I'm looking for, although I've heard similar remarks about the overwhelming amount of content. I've been thinking about breaking into the 4X genre for awhile. Thank you and @Out of the Rafters at the Q for the feedback!

On a somewhat related note, I've also wanted to get back into sci-fi gaming, and started a new Mass Effect run through (original trilogy only, not much of a fan of Andromeda). The first one is... rough, although the story easily stands the test of time. There's been a couple of game breaking bugs that I've encountered on the PC version. I'm mainly just trying to power through it to get to the second and third. It's a shame that the first two are the only ones available on Steam, even though the third one was initially released for Windows as well as the previous gen consoles.

ETA: So far, I'm only starting with the base game, and holding off on the DLC.
