Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro will be suspended by Major League Baseball for violating the league's steroids policy, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney has confirmed with a league source.

Palmeiro, who recently got his 3,000th career hit, was noted for his emotional denial of steroid use before a Congressional panel in March, would be the latest player suspended under the league's new drug policy.

The image of Palmeiro taking a sweet swing from the left side of the plate has been replaced in some minds by the sight of him testifying before a House committee investigating steroids in baseball.

The hearing included testimony from Jose Canseco, who in his book cited Palmeiro and several other players as steroid users. Palmeiro emphatically denies using the performance-enhancing drug, but the Baltimore Orioles' first baseman can't deny how perceptions have changed.

"In my opinion, everyone that plays baseball in this era has been tainted," Palmeiro said during spring training. "Not just the people that he has named in the book, I think this whole era over the last 10, 15 or 20 years has been tainted. Regardless of whether you did or you didn't do anything, this whole era will have that label."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

i knew it!!!!!!! he was hiding a substance in his porn "stache"

he needs to shave that off and come clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This new rule is crap...all he probably did was take some over the counter thing that happened to set the tester off.

Since it was only 10 days, it wasnt steroids, because you get longer time for that.

Like Betancourt of the Indians who got ten days beause he took medicine from his native country, which happened to have things on the list not to take, and he got ten days.

Stupid..

This really surprised me. Palmeiro came out of the hearings looking the best of anybody, and now this. First suspension for any illegal substance (including steroids) is ten games, I believe, so it could be steroids themselves.

I'm not sure who I believe in this right now and who I don't... a sad day for baseball.

No reps for this post, well I suppose it is the Indians lol. BOOO!

actually mac it is 10 days for roids.i dont think betancourt did but i dunno anymore bout raffy.if u get caught for roids u do get suspended only 10 days the first time.

The 3 major stories of the day...

1.Palmeiro tested positve for steriods
2.Bonds might not play for the rest of the season or career..
3.Bret Boone released by the Twins..

All three guys connected to steroid abuse. What a sad state for baseball. All this in the same week that probally the last 2 purist in baseball enter the Hall in Boggs and Sandburg. I hope that one day that baseball gets straightened out. We have been spoiled in this era of the Sammy Sosa, Frank Thomas, Jeff Bagwell, Jim Thome that we are bored if there are not 6 home runs in games. What are these players doing today? We are so spoiled that we bored of the Indians team that we have out there today saying that there is no one to root for. Shame on you Palmeiro for corupting this game even more and brainwashing us into thinking that we are watching a homerun derby instead of a baseball game.

3rd story is ovverated anyone batting 100 and making crucial errors and costing his team games should be cut. Hang it up! and do your bro a favor and convince him too!

Yeah Bret Boone, you think this guys confidance is shaken up. Two years ago putting up Pete Rose numbers. This year he gets called up out by the Sureal Life superstar Jose Canstrikeout and stats are the result. Baseball will have to wait along time for this subject of steroids to go away..

Tons of players are getting busted, Barry see's Raffy go down today and is like ohh man my knee ow yea that smarts ummm I'm done this year...lets let this blow over if no one else big goes down ill come back otherwise this is it..

Barry is probaly done for the year so he can take the steroids to help recover. Times like this make me respect Ken griffy Jr even more. Injuries and age have dimished his skills and he didnt have to turn to steroids to help recover. if his career is on the downward spiral I will have more respect for him for he had a great career. Not a great career because of steroids.

That is the truth Griffey is a favorite of mine ever since I can remember watching baseball. He plays the game 100% all the time at the plate and in the field. His career is a lot like Grant Hills, they are elite players for a decade or so and get hit by the injury bug for a few years yet struggle back to become a nice addition to a team. They are both injury free as of now. And haven't needed roids to get there.
