Minnesota Twins center fielder Torii Hunter has a torn tendon in his left ankle and will be sidelined for at least 4-6 weeks, ESPN's Harold Reynolds learned Friday night.

Hunter, who was taken off the field on a stretcher during the Twins-Red Sox game, will remain with the Twins through the weekend, then fly back to Minnesota on Monday to have an MRI. The MRI should determine if the damage is more extensive.

With two outs and none on in the first inning, Boston's David Ortiz hit a ball to the triangle in deep right-center at Fenway. Hunter tried to climb the 6-foot wall near the bullpen to make the catch, but he planted his left foot awkwardly and fell to the ground in obvious pain.

Hunter grabbed the area around his Achilles' tendon before the medical staff carted him off the field. Lew Ford replaced Hunter, and Ortiz wound up with a double.

Minnesota entered the day a game behind Oakland for the AL wild-card lead. An All-Star in 2002, Hunter has won four straight Gold Glove awards. He was hitting .269 with 14 homers and 56 RBI.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

You never like to see someone get hurt but this will definately slow them down in their wild card pursuit. He is their best fielder and one of the best locker room guys.
