A quick background. First week of August I fell off a ladder from about 12 feet. The initial diagnosis was a broken nose, broken rib, 9 stitches to the forehead, possible torn rotator cuff, and knee injury ( most likely bone bruise)

2 weeks ago the physician that I was seeing recommended that I get an MRI of both my knee and shoulder. Today I got the results back.

Why have a torn meniscus in my knee, plus the most significant injury is a completely torn PCL. there are other significant injuries but nothing I can do about them other than to let them heal.

While my doctor is recommending I go see a specialist he is said that most people with this sort of injury do not get their PCL repaired.

I'm curious if anyone here has had their PCL rebuilt or opted not to have it fixed.

Just want to hear their story and what they think of their ultimate decision

My plumber has a torn pcl. Did it playing rugby when he was 18. It's unfixed he has no problems with it. He doesn't play contact sports anymore but apart from that leads an active life. It's been about 10 years

Key question to ask the doctor or the specialist is "If I choose not to get it repaired, I might be fine now and for the near future, but what happens when I'm 65 or 70... will that affect my ability to get around?"

thats good to here. Ive read thats the case for most people, and especially a plumber who is on their feet all day going up and down stairs thats comforting.

Im 35 so contact sports have been out for quite some time, but I am still very active with the most significant activity of mountaineering. Hikign and love of mountains were the reason my wife and I started dating so thats the prime reason for my concern.

I tore my MCL awhile back. Get the surgery.

I saw a specialist today and was told the PCL isnt like the other ligaments. While the MCL and ACL provide most of the stability to the knee the PCL provides power to the knee, which can easily be covered by the other leg muscles. So generally surgery isnt recommended, and isnt in this case.

Apparently even professional athletes that tear their PCL dont get it fixed (according to this doctor).

I was put in a brace today and get to wear it pretty much all the time for the next 6-12 weeks. But was told I should make a full recovery. This is now the 2nd doctor knee doctor that has told me the same thing, so Im going to trust it.

However my meniscus is torn and will probably require surgery

Hey Bob,

I have actually torn my PCL twice, both playing sports and both times I did not have an operation (first time was a partial, second full). Obviously seeing that it happened again would make you think maybe I should have had it repaired, but with how things happened I do not think surgery would have prevented the second injury. The first time I was in therapy/rehab for about 3 months and coming out of that was the best physically my leg had felt before. Second time through, similar situation with rehab, how every I never truly got back to 100%. A few times a week i will have some minor discomfort and feel rather achy but with that said, there is nothing I am incapable of doing which consist of Basketball and golf 3-4 days a week. If I was to keep up with leg strength and exercises I am guessing things would feel much better but unfortunately I have not been able to keep up.

Any questions let me know!

Did you have a brace if so how much of your daily activity did you spend in it?

Doctor told me to basically live in it but there seems to be some doubt if that means to sleep in it or not

I have one of those braces that you traditionally see someone wear after ACL/MCL injuries. My Doctor had one fitted for me and I was supposed to wear any time I was working out, playing a sport ect. I wore for a little over a year and then focused on leg strength exercises to build muscles up because I felt like i lost mobility. Part two it slightly changed the way I ran, this was causing my hip and lower back on other side to start hurting so i wanted that to stop.

I tore my meniscus and ACL.
I will say if you do get surgery, take your therapy serious af. Push through the pain and stay on schedule to regain full range of motion.
I fell behind because I was a little bitch and I paid for it.
Also, if you're overweight at all, I'd try and lose it to reduce the risk of arthritis.

Had meniscus repair surgery yesterday morning. So far lots of pain meds and lots of sleeping. This morning I woke up with a low-grade fever. yay.

As far physical therapy I am definitely going to make that a priority. they had to clean up some of the cartilage in my knee as well as stitch up my meniscus so I definitely dont want my knee to stiften up and all of a sudden im back under the knife to be cutting up scar tissue
