Heads were likely to roll after the Yankees were eliminated from the postseason by the Tigers, but the opening odds were on Alex Rodriguez going first, not Joe Torre.

According to the New York Daily News, however, the popular Yankees manager will be fired unless he decides to resign first to save face. Sources told the newspaper that former Yankees player and manager Lou Piniella will be owner George Steinbrenner's choice to replace Torre.

After winning the World Series in four of his first five seasons, Torre has weathered many storms since then, but Saturday's 8-3 loss left him emotional as he pondered his future in the Bronx.

"We felt pretty good about ourselves," Torre told the Daily News. "But again, that's something for [general manager Brian Cashman] and I and other people to talk about. But right now, it's just ..." and choking back tears, he concluded "... it's just tough."

Darn I wanted to give Lou a look :( Torre should go..he's a miserable coach anymore..

yeah it's Torre's fault that arod had only 1 hit.. and is 3-29 with 0hr and 0 rbis in his last 29 post season games.. its also his fault no one else could advance a baserunner, besides Jeter..

Torre is a god in NYC, and he isnt responsible for that, its Steinbreners fault his team lkacks chemistry because he screws with the line up to fast, look at the old yankees teams when they won, they didnt have all these ego's and superstars, they had a well rounded team that was fundamentaly sound. its a embarrasment to baseball to see Joe gone, and Lou isnt going to fix all these problems either. they simply got out played by pitching. how are you gonna have a pitcher who throws 35 pitches at the end of the 5th inning? thats unheard of. the yanks got flustered and couldnt take the presure...oh yea and they still got A-Rod.

I'd take Torre in Cleveland in a second. Dude never really tore our hearts out anyways. We always had the Yanks number in the playoffs.

I hope they'll at least see if he thinks he could do better than Wedge.

Torre in Cleveland? Never...

Dolan wont pay for players, why would he pay for a coach?

Torre couldn't get the most out of the players the Yankees had I'd hate to see him try to fix Peralta and Carmona..

Fixing superstars is much different than grooming up young players. From his experience, Torre would do well here in Cleveland. There is actually a decent chance that Dolan might be interested in bringing him here.

All you need to do is teach Peralta how to hit the curve ball and he'll be nasty as he was before people figured out he couldn't.

And how to field a ground ball.

well as of right now.. Steinbrenner had no comment.. he might not fire Joe... who knows.. I wouldnt.. a lot of the new york articles are bashing George for even considering firing Torre..

but the papers even said that Jeter was to blame for A-Rod's playoff bust... No idea why they think that!

both show no emotion, A-Rod isnt a clutch player at all, he should be moved to SS so he can actually succed in NY, because he is the worst at 3rd. i told ya so, that article in Sports Illustrated would be the death of the yankees in the playoffs.

jeter dont show emotion yeah right!

anyways.. Joe Torre didnt get fired!
