Trade Deadline Day - 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Man Naylor is gonna be a huge upgrade this year and Quantrill is a huge improvement as a swingman/spot starter over Plutko. Thats a team improvement this year. Then you add 3 solid prospects who all look like they will atleast get a taste at the majors....don't hurt em Cleveland FO, don't hurt em.

An assessment of the new arrivals....

Josh Naylor.. is a baseball player.. plays multiple spots.. was able to go back to get a ball on the warning track as well as come in on a gork to short left field.. He scored from first on a double and puts the bat on the ball.. He is a dirtbag.. and is in no way some chubby 1B only defender.. He moves like an athlete.. Good addition to the club..

Cal Quantrill.. has an unusual delivery.. his FB sits 93-94 and touches 96.. he falls off the mound to the first base side on each pitch.. has a nice change up that, along with his motion, is very deceptive.. His command isn't going to remind you of Josh Tomlin and will remain a WIP..but, it's coming.. As a bullpen piece.. he's going to be a very good addition to the club..

Austin Hedges.. watching him as a former catcher reminds me of why all the protective gear is needed.. Hedges can give a clinic on blocking balls in the dirt.. his actions behind the plate are smooth.. his feet are quick and his hands are soft.. this is a superb defensive backstop.. While only watching one AB.. he watched a hittable pitch go by for strike three.. I doubt he'll ever be more than a once in a while/hot streak kind of batter...

Good start..

Throw in the prospects. Damngood haul for a often hurt pitcher

It's probably unfair to the overall deal.. but the prospects should be maintained as separate from the actual ML players at this point.. Make no mistake.. this overall deal is looking like genius.. it's almost impossible for Sunshine to surpass the results from Plesac's return, Quantrill's two innings of wonderful relief pitching and Naylors efforts in the field and at bat..

I can honestly say that Cantillo and Arias, if they stay healthy, are going to be exceptional talents going forward.. We won't, however, know much about them for at least one and possibly up to three years (arias sooner than cantillo, btw). The last piece of the deal, Owen Miller, may be "just another guy" making him system fodder.. we'll see. Thanks for the response..

How can you say that Cantillo and Arias, if they stay healthy, are going to be "exceptional" talents? Nobody knows this when they're 20 years old and played in A ball last year.

Clev for naylor Quantrill and hedges would have been a very good deal. Throw in 3 good prospects and its a great deal. One of the three willbe pan out. Clev is overrated. 29. And cant count on him to play a full season

I'm shocked at today's group "zeal"....baseball must be a momentum sport.

Could be a genius move, but that will be determined at a later date. It is a deal that I make everyday of the week and twice on Sunday regardless. The SP depth made this possible. We've mentioned Plesac and/or McKenzie being the reason(s) that Clevinger could be dealt. What we haven't discussed much is the SP depth that we still have. Quantrill being one of them. Rodriguez, Allen, and Moss being the others that are pretty much ready.

Quantrill looks to have improved an already very good BP. Don't forget Cal was a 1st round pick and a top 100 prospect. I'm surprised that Leone survived the addition, but what do I know.

Naylor is a hitter and also a former 1st round pick and top 100 prospect. Power is usually the last thing to come around for a hitter. Watch what happens when Josh gets adequate AB's. He's got 25 HR power easily, but isn't an all or nothing hitter. He uses the entire field, doesn't need a platoon partner, and has demonstrated that he won't be a defensive liability IMO.

Hedges is a cheaper version of Berto. He has a bit more power, but I don't think he carries the OBP that Berto has demonstrated throughout his career.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that Cantillo will be a top 100 prospect sometime next season. This stupid pandemic is likely going to prevent much prospect evaluation due to the lack of games.

Arias will probably end up in the top 100 rankings as well.

Miller isn't great at anything, but does everything pretty well. He looks to be an excellent UIF from what I can tell.

Not at all sorry that you don't know..

Just because you can't look for, see and read scouting multiple reports... visit spring training, go to numerous minor league games, go to the Arizona Fall League and even be a spectator at more than one Carribean World Series and so on, (when I say so on.. I mean spending a lot of time and effort to find out) It doesn't mean others don't....

I do.. and i know what I see..

I'm glad he didn't go into a possible reason for his departure: the Covid Protocol Breach.. It may have hastened his departure.. but had no place describing the sentiments he feels about Cleveland and the opportunity he received to become major league pitcher..

Nobody knows when careers will start or end, so not sure why this post needed to be made in a sense. we all know there is no sure bet prospect, but when it comes to potential and talent, both guys are very high if not "exceptional".

You have your own rankings and his opinion is that, you can disagree with why you feel they aren't exceptional potential but never can say what you did cause no one knows and you are stating all opinions don't count towards them. Neither would yours with the way you spoke

Hey... so instead of shitting all over the fellow poster you're responding to, you could just tell someone why you feel that way. "I've done a lot of work on these guys. I've watched them for years both from afar and in person. I'm really high on them" gets your point across without taking a dump in Wham's Cheerios.

Also, Wham is correct that nobody "knows" how a prospect is going to turn out. You can feel very strongly, but obviously nothing is 100% certain.

Now... let me back away from defending Wham. I like being on the other side more.

Cool, how often have you seen these two play and what have you seen that makes them "exceptional"? Also, do you have access to scouting reports that the average fan like me doesn't? Are there other prospects in the Padres organization that you would have preferred or are these the guys you like most?

I hope you're right that this deal is "genius", by the way.

Jason Lloyd has an interesting column in The Athletic which asks why this deal had to be made now as opposed to the waiting until the off-season and having Clevinger for the playoffs. He acknowledges that Naylor is an upgrade but suggests that we could have traded a prospect for an upgrade in left field and kept Clevinger through this season. It's the same question I asked yesterday.
