Trade Ideas 24-25

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why are we so quick to make changes to a roster that's working?

If the team was winning 1 way, or relying on the same person/people, I'd fully understand. However, they're winning games every way imaginable (blowouts, close games, comebacks), and doing it with different guys almost every time. I was a bigger proponent for consolidation trades and moving on from Okoro, Levert and Niang, etc than anyone, and *I* am now suggesting holding off on moves until the team knows what they have/need. It's not broken, so why fix anything?

When the Guardians were 1st in their division and 1st in the American League everyone was screaming for Antonetti to get off his hands and add to the team lol. I carry that same attitude to the Cavs. I want to stack the deck, make the moves to push us over the top. The Boston Celtics were already a finals contender before they made the moves for Derrick White and Jrue Holiday. They didn't need to do anything. But those moves made them go from title threat to title favorite.

Especially when the holes on the team are still really clear. Another backup big and another wing. At the minimum we NEED Dean Wade insurance. If he goes down everyone will want Koby's head on a pike for not addressing wing depth at the deadline.

I'm having a lot of fun watching the Cavs but I remember the 66-16 Cavs team with Lebron that fell apart in the playoffs and needed more talent. I remember us winning 16 of 17 games just last season only to wind up having the wheels come off and we fired our head coach. Life comes at you fast.

I am not a proponent until we get more data on Strus.

But this is what I mean about being a "prisoner of the moment". As much as we all want this success to continue, it won't. They will hit rough patches. Things will go wrong. Koby can't get caught up in this moment of success and have it get in the way of a better-constructed roster.

Maybe there is no offer out here that can improve the roster come the deadline. Maybe they deem its ok to go into the second apron next year and keep everyone. Maybe they deem its not ok and let some combo of Merrill, Jerome, and LeVert walk at the end of the year. Who knows? But i'd hate to fall into the same trap as the last two years where successful stretches around the trade deadline give them enough pause to not make the necessary move.

Jaylon Tyson for Tari Eason. Solves our need for a big wing.

We’re not going to be able to significantly upgrade the wing position without really shaking things up. And to be clear, I don’t view Cam Johnson as a significant upgrade. In fact, I’d rather have Strus than Cam Johnson anyway.

We need to upgrade the Niang/backup big spot in a realistic way. Douglar mentioned Larry Nance Jr, who makes a lot of sense and is a realistic target. We just don’t know who will be available at this point.

Cavs
Eason
Stewart

Detroit
Landale
Okoro

Houston
Levert
Porter Jr
Tyson

Some other cool trade targets:
Sandro Mamukelashvili (underrated and fits quite well with our group)

and another one who is probably not very gettable:

Julian Champagnie

I didn't know who Sandro Mamukelashvilibonilli was before this moment but now I will be very upset if we don't trade for him. 6'11", looks athletic, can knock down the three. UFA after this season might lower his value but he should also be cheap to retain since he's an unheralded big.

Strus and Niang for Keldon and Champagnie. Cavs add size at the wing, Spurs add much needed shooting.

I'm going back and forth if CLE should get a third big first then the big wing or the other way around. I'm worried Mobley and Allen are already feeling burnt out

Cavs get: Keldon Johnson, Julian Champagnie and two 2nds ('26 via Jazz, '28 via Pels)
Spurs get: Max Strus and Georges Niang

Why?
Cavs add size at the wing and some assets.
Spurs add much needed shooting and veterans.

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie is the guy I wanted to get this off-season.

But this years he's even more integral for them, so that ship has sailed :(.

Good call on Mamu for offense, not for D though haha.

Cavs get: Julian Champagnie
Spurs get: Jaylon Tyson

Why?
Cavs add a wing to help them win now.
Spurs get a promising prospect for their rebuild.
