Trades for 2018-2019 Cavs

He may have no value. Entirely possible. I think a buyout is off the table though. Unless Smith is willing to give back some major money, I'd guess the Cavs will sit on the contract to see if it has any value in trade after the Finals. If not, they'll just release him and pay the buyout for next season.

I don't think we'll know his value until we get past the Finals. It's true that no team has a guarantee of signing anyone, but there are also several teams that won't have space to make a max contract offer unless they make a trade like this.

Yeah I don't think we should buy him out because of the off chance a team needs a contract like his for a opt in and trade.

I just think a team that is going to go after a max contract player in free agency will line that up at the trade deadline. If at the last minute a player indicates they want to sign with a certain team and they need to clear the cap space, I think there will tanking teams with cap space willing to just absorb a contract. If you look at what the Bulls are doing right now they are just taking in cash for players, not even asking for assets. JRs guaranteed money and tanking teams not even asking for assets, doesn't sound like a recipe for us getting good asset from JRs contract.

If the rockets or any team offers the right package for JR at the trade deadline, I would take it. I wouldn't hedge that his contract's value will be higher after the finals. Even if it's just Brandon Knight, Chriss, and first round pick for JR and two lesser 2nd round picks, I'd do it. Knight have potential to be valuable in a year and I'd take a 1st round pick in the 20's over two second round picks 45 or lower.

I think the one thing that could cause someone that wants JR to make a trade is that contract, since it has potential value after the trade deadline. It means they cannot count on him being bought out - and if I'm the Cavs I'd have no intention of buying him out. I think all noise on that front has come from JR's camp.

Burks will be the most attractive right now since he's no commitment for next year and may be able to help in a playoff push/postseason situation.

Smith's experience playing for a championship team is probably his greatest asset.

Just going through the teams who may be candidates to try and trade for Love, CHarlotte strikes me as one who has the potential assets to do it.

There are others, like Utah, but they just don't have the things to trade. Their picks will be too low, they don't have a ton of picks incoming.

Charlotte still might be a sub .500 team even with Love. Their picks COULD have decent value. And they've got a boatload of 2nd rounders incoming.

Another is Washington. Also have all of their own picks and those could still hold decent value even after acquiring Love. Bobby Portis would be a decent young guy to get back.

That said, Utah can basically just absorb Love. They have a ton of cap space. So, if they were to just hand over unprotected picks and give no salary back, that'd be something to consider. Their picks likely aren't gonna be good, but ya never know with injuries or out of nowhere trade demands how a team can fall apart. The Nets picks weren't supposed to be high either with a young Deron Williams...but hey, look what happens.

And before anyone says "no one is gonna give up unprotected picks for Love," think about Utah. NO free agents ever go their. Gobert and Mitchell are young. INgles is locked up. Love fits beautifully there and the LIKELIHOOD that their picks being unprotected comes back to bite them is fairly low. It's a risk they could legitimately think about taking. ESPECIALLY if Durant leaves. If Durant leaves....I think Utah makes a TON of sense.

My guess is the front office won't look to move Love unless we get Zion and it's clear Zion can't play SF or center. Love has had a huge difference to the spacing for Cedi and Sexton since he got back.

I think it's alot more likely we move TT since Zizic has looked good as a starter and Nance is locked up long term on a better contract.

If we are able to move Clarkson, TT, Knight, Henson, and JRs contract, we should have enough draft capital. Unless we find a real replacement for Love which it doesn't seem like Nance will be, I think we keep him for a while.

Nets just traded Crabbe and 17 to Atlanta for Prince. So that option is dead.
It was the Cavs best option.
Smith is even more valuable now though for teams looking for immediate space unless Chicago wants to absorb somebodies $ for a pick.
I now like OKC 21st pick, Miami's 13th or maybe Detroit at 15. for J.R.
