Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would be over the moon if he turns out to be a Wilt Chamberlain or Kareem Abdul Jabbar type player.
Olajuwon or Ewing are probably better comparisons. At least for his floor anyways.

Guys he won't be Amar'e, Ewing, Kareem, or any of those guys being mentioned. He will be the Canadian Sensation.

i dont see TT being a all star calibur player in the future. I'd like to be suprised but i just dont see it in him. I do think his game is useful and he will start as a roung and tumble rebounder who picks up 3 fouls in 3 mins. i can see him maybe getting to a level with other quality role playing 4's who do thei job guard their position and dont whine about how many shots to take. So kurt thomas would be my gues i suppose

I don't see the crazy upside you guys are suggesting either, but I think he will be a great role player. That's what I expect from him, and that's all he needs to be for me to be satisfied with the pick. If he turns out to be more, that's fantastic.

And before I get quoted and yelled at, "You'd be fine with the 4th pick in the draft being a role player?!", that's not how it works and I'm sick of that argument. The only way to judge the Thompson pick is a few years from now in comparison to the highly regarded prospects drafted after him. If this draft turns out to be as weak as it seemed outside of the top 2 picks, then picking the best player available at #4 is all you can try to do whether he's a role player or not.

Tristan has a shot to be something special. His quick and explosive leaping ability together with his long arms will serve him well in the NBA but he has a long ways to go to fill out his game. I recall another quick and explosive leaper who added years to his career by developing an accurate mid-range jump shot: Larry Nance. Larry had no jump shot to speak of, when he came into the league but he worked like hell to add one to his game. Later, in his career, when he no longer had the young legs, his jumper was still a dangerous weapon in his arsenal. Larry, of course, was also a great defender, a solid rebounder and a top-notch shot blocker.

Of course, I am not saying Tristan will become Larry Nance. But his canvas is still pretty much blank and it is up to him to fill it in. Develop a mid-range jump shot, improve his ball-handling, add some body mass and strength, get better on the defensive boards and continue to improve the low post game. If he can do these things, then he will have a nice career.

He has some solid qualities: he's reportedly a hard worker and is very coachable; he's a team player; he can block shots; he's great on the offensive glass; he has some low post skills; he's very athletic and he has a tremendous wingspan. Now, he needs to add some advanced basketball skills to this package. He's young and this will take time. But, at the end of the day, it is really up to Tristan as to whether he will live up to being the 4th pick in the draft.

Thompson is Tyrus Thomas with a brain and work ethic, what is not to like about his upside?

I see Amir Johnson, but with Chase Buddinger's hops, potential to have Lee Nailon's mid-range jumper, the eyes of a small starving Somalian baby, Oprah's ability to relate to people, T. Boone Pickens' business sense, Slim Pickens' acting chops, and the private parts of a shetland pony.

First I want to say I liked the pick. It was a weak draft and we went with a glue type player after taking one of only 2 potential super stars in the draft. But stop with Dwight, or Ewing or Russell comparison. He has a chance to be a good defending solid NBA player. We dont have many of those right now, so it was good pick up in my opinion, but some of you are crazy with your comparisons.

(Oh and PS, just remember the last Canadian that could ball was Michael J Fox as Teen Wolf, and that Mother Effer had some hops.)

I wasn't trying to use Marcus Camby as an example, but just that type of player. Not a 20 point scorer, but someone who does everything else very well. I'm really intrigued by him, even more so than Irving who I almost expect to be very good. Thompson is going to be very critical to how quickly we rebuild the Cavs. If he develops a good mid range jump shot, him and Irving on the Pick and Roll will be sick!

I guess I'm the only one who see's Ben Wallace but with the scoring power of Kevin Durant..?

Drew, Drew, Drew..

Haha

Never said he WILL be Bill Russell or Dwight Howard. I said it's impossible to say exactly what a 20 year old will become, even if you are named Ben, Micheal Young, or Herbie Jigglesworth. Yes, Jigo, I will use your real name.
