Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I get why people want to trade Tristan, especially because his value will be insane if he averages 15/10/2 on good efficiency.

But, in my mind, Tristan’s court awareness has immensely helped Darius, Collin, KPJ, and Cedi. First, Tristan is always watching to make sure the young guards have an outlet. This happened like five times last night.

Second, Tristan’s ability as a roll man is creating open players on every pick-and-roll. This is a large reason why Darius’s passing has looked so good.

Finally, Darius did a great job on Lillard last night, but that is because Garland was playing really tight defense. He and Sexton can do this - mitigating their size problem - when Tristan is on the same side of the court.

So I get why people want to trade TT. But - like discussions about trading Kevin Love - I wonder if trading Tristan does more harm than good to our long-term prospects.

well if he doesn't want to resign with the Cavs, they pretty much have to trade him.

That’s the difference between Love & Thompson. Love is signed long term while Thompson isn’t. Hence the reason Thompson will likely be traded & Love won’t be.

I keep wondering if this is a contract year TT which is a 1 year thing and the old TT shows up for any team that signs him to a long term contract.
And with the way he is playing how much will he get as FA?

I personally don't think he ever plays that way on purpose. He said in 2017 that he thought he may never regain his bounce from that calf injury. Then last year, he was actually having one of his best years until he got hurt. I think he is going to make whoever happy as a bench energy big who can lead a squad. 6-9M

In today's NBA where so many players are drastically overpaid... there's absolutely zero chance TT signs somewhere for $6 million per and I don't even think he'll sign for $9 million either..

He'll be asking for something ludicrous in the $20 million range (Rich Paul is his agent mind you)... He'll end up settling for around $12-$15 million over about 3 years with a team who's desperate enough to overpay.

Maybe, he is good, but he is known as an overpaid guy. He doesn't fit on every roster, and he is stat stuffing on a bad team. No one else is going to give him this many opportunities to score etc.

I think he is going to be dissapointed in the offers he gets.

Regressing back to pre lebron tunnel vision, he’ll try and put that ball back in the net doesn’t matter if all 5 defenders are in the paint. I get it’s a contract year and he wants that money but damn pass the ball out to the open 3 once in a while. He’s shooting 50% for the year which is trash considering he doesn’t shoot outside of 3 feet.

If the Cavs can get TT for a contract in that range then I think they should try to sign him. He’s been a good leader and mentor for the young guys, it’s unlikely that the Cavs will need that space for anything serious, and he’s still tradable if he plays well.

Dewayne Dedmon's 3 yrs $40m deal seems like a good baseline of what to expect

You can't use a Sacramento Kings deal as a baseline for anything. This is a team who overpaid a 30 year old journeyman to play 10 minutes a game for them despite having much higher upside bigs on the roster.

Taj Gibson (34) and Nene (37) each got 2 yr $20m deals. Jonas V and Thad Young both got 3 yrs $43.5-45m.

I think $13m/yr is right in his range.

Nene's deal is solely a cap manipulation tool. And Taj went to the Knicks. The Jonas V and Thad Young deals would be comparable tho. I'm not necessarily arguing his value, just that your choice of player contracts is slightly flawed because of it being an organization that is notoriously mismanaged.
