UDFA Thread - Browns related

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
According to scouting reports I read on him, it sounds like he gained weight in 2020 and was less explosive as a result and it really hurt his game. Although it seems like everyone on that team played like shit so maybe it's something like the Harbaugh effect in Michigan.

Maybe he has work ethic issues. Although I'm not sure the Browns would have signed him if they thought that was the case.

Yeah, considering the burns been on the radar as a 5 star HS recruit and via his better earlier seasons at FSU, there has to be a reason he was passed over 259 times.

But..... the talent is there and I think barring any issues with working hard and taking to coaching the Browns plan is for him to win the 5th DT spot behind Billings, Jackson, Elliot, and Togiai. The priority in which they went after him and the money offered is an indicator of that.
This team seems to have the goal of throwing pass rushers in the interior. I feel like Wilson is unique insofar as he can also play as a one-technique on top of the three-technique. I love the versatility.

Wilson is an elite DT when healthy but the durability is a big problem with a plethora of recurring injury issues. Meniscus in Highschool seems to be worst not sure about the extent of repair on that

If I remember correctly, Wilson had a very public clashing of heads with new FSU coach Mike Norvell back in June after the George Floyd stuff went down.

Norvell said the staff had talked to each player individually and Wilson Tweeted out that wasn't true and also said he would no longer be attending workouts.

It's certainly possible that Wilson mentally checked out on the staff. But regardless of the reason, Wilson was really terrible he was in 2020. Like shockingly bad after two really good seasons in a row.

None of this surprises me, especially after seeing how poorly all of that Florida State team played with how seemingly talented they were.

Another thing to consider is that he(and every other Nole) had to develop through three separate coaching staffs over the past four years(last year of Jimbo, two years of Taggart, first year of Norvell)

It’s not hard to imagine that he might have kept the upward trajectory of his first three years if he had four straight seasons coached by Larry Johnson or four straight season in the run like the NFL program at Bama

Whatever though, if we‘re lucky, we hit the lotto are the benefactors of that instability at FSU

How the fuck did he not get drafted? Big DT that can pass rush.

I know for some guys, agents will start telling teams that they don't want their guy to be draft once they hit the very late rounds. Once your a 6th or 7th round pick, they don't seem to have that much better of a chance at making a team than a UDFA. Getting on a team where the player fits the scheme and plays an area of need increases their chance of making the team.

Looks like so far we have signed 4 players in UDFA, DT Wilson, DE McKnight, CB Rugamba from Ball State and RB Harbison III from Charlotte...

With Wilson getting the bonus, he definitely was the one teams wanted... Other three seem to be depth pieces at the moment.

I read somewhere this was a super small class, Normally about 2000 or so players get agents, this year about 650. I think we are going to see really small UDFA classes for the teams. If everyone that got an agent finds a team, thats 10-12...that isnt realistic, no way they all sign.....i can see a situation where teams only sign around 8 or so each.

With the Browns in particular it may have to do with the fact that after the draft, we had 83 of the 90 offseason roster spots already filled.

Theyve signed 5 UDFA, the 4 Sportcoach mentioned + a CB from Kansas State( not sure if his HS coach comes with him to the board as a package deal) That leaves 2 spots. There is belief in some circles that one more CB may get signed(someone like Gareon Conley, Steven Nelson, or Richard Sherman). So unless they want to cut several bottom of the roster guys, there’s just not room for the 12-15 player UDFA classes we’ve been used to in the past.

Wilson gained weight.

Wilson has something of a sketchy injury situation.

That said, he’s a professional now and a former 5-star recruit that has flashed starting caliber ability at the NFL level. This is exactly the type of risk/reward play you’d want to see from the UDFA.

This guy sounds like he could have been a top 5 pick in a different universe. At least coming out of high school it seems that is the way he was viewed. Apparently there were times in his college career that his production matched his hype. We have had a number of UDFA become starters over the years going back to Orlando Brown. We have never had an UDFA with this kind of pedigree. Not sure how this works out.
