UDFA Thread - Browns related

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This guy sounds like he could have been a top 5 pick in a different universe. At least coming out of high school it seems that is the way he was viewed. Apparently there were times in his college career that his production matched his hype. We have had a number of UDFA become starters over the years going back to Orlando Brown. We have never had an UDFA with this kind of pedigree. Not sure how this works out.
He would have been a day 2 pick had he come out last year. Just had an awful year.

Its like we got an extra 5th or 6th round pick for the 200k we guaranteed him. Its funny, we saved 10 mill or so cutting Sheldon, and then use a sliver of that to take a chance on a young and talented DT with huge upside but huge risk.

Its so weird to have a GM that makes smart move after smart move.

Did a deep dive on Wilson and on top of what has already been said regarding his outlier season (clashed with coaches, put on weight), it sounds like the new defensive system installed last year also did him no favors, favoring more of a 3-man front vs. 4-man that he excelled in.

Sounds like all these factors led him to just have an apathetic mindset, which isn't the attitude you hope for but if this guy wants to develop into his potential, it does feel like this is the perfect landing spot. You got two otherworldly athletes to learn from on top of a coaching staff that seems to genuinely care about player's well-being.

Sounds like a recipe for getting yourself not drafted, but on talent alone becoming a very desirable UDFA to have in your camp.

Wilson gained weight.

Wilson has something of a sketchy injury situation.

That said, he’s a professional now and a former 5-star recruit that has flashed starting caliber ability at the NFL level. This is exactly the type of risk/reward play you’d want to see from the UDFA.

Seems to be a pretty simple bet. You're betting that the issue was conflict with the FSU coaching staff, and that once away from there, he will work hard at his conditioning and get in good shape. If he doesn't, then you cut him.

Great kind of bet to make with a UDFA because there is no real downside except a very small amount of cap space. But huge reward if it works.

Brugler's Scouting Report on Marvin Wilson. #11 DT

11. MARVIN WILSON | Florida State 6037 | 303 lbs. | SR. Houston, Texas (Episcopal) 9/5/1998 (age 22.65) #21

BACKGROUND: Marvin Wilson grew up in the Acres Home neighborhood in northwest Houston and his family endured tough financial times. He had the opportunity to attend Episcopal High School (a private school in Bellaire), primarily as a basketball player before football emerged as his main sport. Wilson posted 19.0 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks as a senior while earning numerous All-American awards. He finished his prep career with 71 tackles for loss and 42.0 sacks and played alongside other top recruits like OT Walker Little (Stanford), WR Jaylen Waddle (Alabama) and WR Jhamon Ausbon (Texas A&M).

A five-star defensive tackle recruit out of high school, Wilson was the No. 1 ranked defensive tackle, the No. 1 ranked player in Texas (ahead of CB Jeff Okudah and Little) and the No. 6 recruit overall. He started receiving scholarship offers from major programs as a sophomore. Wilson had a final five of Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma and South Florida, committing to the Seminoles on signing day. He accepted his invitation to the 2021 Senior Bowl.

STRENGTHS: Broad-shouldered brick house with a strong trunk…eats up blockers and holds his ground versus power…flashes the violence to bench press blockers off him…physical hand swipe to replace the punch of blockers…shows a natural sense for the inside run game, maintaining his gap integrity…shows the line of scrimmage awareness to track ball carriers and find the lane…adequate movements for his size to attack gaps…effective looper, rushing from the outside…flashes the ability to make plays outside his square…doesn’t miss many tackle opportunities…three blocked kicks in 2020.

WEAKNESSES: Stiff midsection and ankle tight, lacking the body twitch to easily unwind from blocks…played overweight as a senior and his body composition issues were clear on tape…finds himself off-balance too often at the point of attack…struggles to disengage and needs to better lock out and maximize his length…doesn’t consistently create his own passing lanes…relies on his power instead of countering with sound tactics…suffered back-to-back season-ending injuries as a junior and senior with a broken thumb that required surgery (November 2019) and a leg injury that required a minor procedure (November 2020)…below-average backfield production and didn’t reach double-digit sacks in his career (39 games).

SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Florida State, Wilson lined up at both the three- and one-technique positions in defensive coordinator Adam Fuller’s scheme. He was part of Jimbo Fisher’s highly regarded 2017 recruiting class (that included other five-stars like Cam Akers), but his development appeared to suffer due to the turmoil within the program, including three different coaching staffs the last four years. Wilson has NFL tools and flashes the upfield burst and play strength to force his way through gaps. However, he played too heavy on his 2020 tape and his motor tends to spurt instead of rev, simply going through the motions. Overall, Wilson has size and talent, but he struggles to play with balance through contact and lacks explosive movements to be a consistent factor in the backfield. He projects as a mid-round depth piece with obvious bust potential.

GRADE: 5th Round

For what it's worth, Matt Miller had Marvin Wilson going 14th overall (to the Browns, coincidentally) in his 2021 Way Too Early Mock draft in April of 2020.

Just goes to show how highly thought of Wilson was prior to the 2020 season cratering his value. If the Browns are able to salvage any percentage of the pre-2020 player, he'll be a stellar get in UDFA.

I was watching some film yesterday and it’s clear switching to the 3-man front as a more traditional nose tackle was awful for him. He can play as a 1-tech, but it’s not his best position. He’s a broad 3-tech who reminds me a bit of Sheldon Richardson.

Agree. Perfect storm of bad events last year. Coaching staff change, Covid, busts head with new coach over perception of how the coach backed up the players reaction to George Floyd, scheme change and role change for Wilson. put on bad weight, possibly for the purpose of that new role, team overall was a disaster, injured halfway through the season.

As long as he wants to be a pro and wants to take to professional coaching and mentor ship, I truly think we may have gotten a steal. Like a Cowboys/La’el Collins level or better steal.

Whats the bigger headline here? Wilson was rated middle of the 1st before the 2020 season or the Browns were going to draft 14th not 26th before the 2020 season?

We have a scout specifically assigned to scout the Charlotte 49ers? Ogunjobi moved on now, but we signed LeMay last year and 2 from there this year.

Florida State iDL Marvin Wilson shockingly dropped out of the draft after a poor 2020 season (that in hindsight he just should have opted-out of). Cleveland, in desperate need for interior players after deciding to value-shop on CB Greg Newsome and LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah in the early rounds, moved aggressively to land a prospect that shouldn’t have been available to them in the UDFA ranks. Per the NFL Network’s Tom Pelisaro, the Browns “won a swift bidding war” by dropping $162,000 in guarantees. That ranked No. 2 among UDFA in guaranteed cash this cycle.

A five-star recruit who posted 42 sacks in high school, Wilson posted elite PFF grades of 90.1 and 90.7 in 2018-2019, ranking No. 6 in the country in iDL pass-rush win rate among qualifiers over that span. Wilson plays every down, and brings his motor to special teams work. He blocked two field goals against Georgia Tech and a punt against UNC last year.

Wilson was in the first round of every single “Too-Early 2021 Mock Draft” published after last April’s draft. He entered the 2020 regular season ranked No. 9 overall on PFF’s draft board. So how did he go undrafted eight months later?

A long injury wrap-sheet, a well-publicized spat with FSU HC Mike Norvell over the summer regarding Norvell’s depiction to the media of how he spoke to players about George Floyd’s death, and what was in essence three bad games in 2020 before a season-ending leg injury. Wilson was heating up before going down, with his two best games of the six he played coming at the end.

Wilson’s injury rap sheet is a long one: He tore the meniscus in his right knee during his senior year of high school, suffered a left MCL tear in 2018, a season-ending hand injury in 2019, and the season-ending leg injury last year.

There are questions about how long his career will last. But as a UDFA, that doesn’t really matter anymore -- he's likely to more than return value on his guarantee through his first 10 active NFL games. Wilson’s game is based on power, counter moves and torque -- not raw athleticism. He’s going to make that team, and I think he cracks the rotation sooner rather than later. He’ll be a special teams menace until he does.
