With the latest news involving Varejao I figured there would probably be a lot of S & T ideas so it might be a good idea to put them in one place.

I start it off with one with Seattle.

Varejao and Shannon Brown to the Sonics for Nick Collison and Delonte West.

Any deals will need some work because of AV's BYC status after he signs a new contract.
Collison brings another young big man and one who actually possesses some form of offensive game and West brings help at PG.

Collison and West.. I like that a lot, Narl..

Rarely are trades completed within the Division, but Cleveland and Milwaukee could probably help each other out here. Because Charlie Bell (during his negotiations) also expressed a desire to change locations, the Bucks could offer up a Bell and Gadzuric package for Varejao. The Bucks give up the most talent here, but Varejao is a better frontcourt defender than Gadzuric. Royal Ivey is less likely "than...not "then"" Bell to explode offensively, but the defensive tenacity is about the same.

Bell would give the Cavs another guy to camp at the 3 point line and shoot wide open shots (he'd shoot the highest percentage of any Cav). Gadzuric is a better and more active rebounder and shotblocker than Varejao so the Cavs would benefit there as well.

On second thought, I'd pass on this hypothetical idea. AV is solid as a one dimensional role player, but he's not worth both of our guys.

I take it you haven't noticed Daniel Gibson is shooting over 50% from 3pt?

You can keep your guys ...

I don't think Seattle will trade for AV. They already have a cadre at the big position.

The real problem with Anderson is the sign part. Just because another team is boneheaded enough to offer big dollars does not make a deal automatic. I don't see anyone tradable for AV that cleveland will want for big bucks.

For example, We might pay that kind of money for say Tony Parker, but there is no way the Spurs would do that deal. AV is not star enough to command that kind of trade.

On the other hand, no doubt Indiana would trade Mike Dunleavy for AV, in a sign and trade of that magnitude, but there is no way we would cripple our team with a player like that. Just will not happen ever.

The only way I see Clevland making a sign and trade is if A) we get draft picks. B)We get a all-star caliber player back..

How about AV, Ira and a first rounder in 2009 for Elton Brand?

I have a question, which I have asked several times of you CBA "experts". If we sign and trade AV, do we count half of his salary against the trade balance or all of it?

I don't appreciate the quotes but I'll answer your question CleveRocks. Andy will be BYC because he will be getting a raise in his per year salary greater then 20%.

When trading a base year player (BYC), the salary used for comparison is the player's previous salary, or 50% of the first-year salary in his new contract, whichever is greater.

If Andy signs for 8 million per year, his trade value for the Cavs is only 4 million.
The receiving team uses his full yearly salary (8 million) as his value.

ben, i believe that is not true in a "sign & trade" deal. Only in a s&t will his full value be alowed to come back to the cavs this year.

Larry Coon's Faqs are a valuable tool. Check out his page HERE. Here is a quick hitter on this topic to get you started.

Base year compensation (BYC) prevents another salary cap loophole. Without BYC, a team over the salary cap that wants to trade a player, but can't because of the Traded Player exception (which says teams can't take back more than 125% of the salary they trade away), could just sign the player to a new contract that fits within the desired range, then do the trade. BYC says "if you re-sign a player and give him a big raise, then for a period of time his trade value will be lower than his actual salary."
Question 73
One complication with sign-and-trade deals is that the signed player can immediately become a BYC player (see question number 73 for more information on BYC), so the player's BYC value must be used when determining whether the trade is allowed.
Question 76

RandolphKeyes mentioned something close to this in a different thread, but how about:

Gasol and filler (Cardinal, Stoudamire, any other contracts they may want to dump)

for Hughes and AV?

W/ Iavaroni playing uptempo Hughes may actually excel. And we know Memphis is willing to commit some money to AV.....

This would also keep the Cavs w/ numerous other pieces to deal if something more came along.

Gasol could bring back so much more then what the Cavs can offer. Hughes is a boat anchor that stalls pretty much any trade when he's included.

Heart.

Beat.

how about a Varejao, newble, jones, and Hughes to Boston for KG and Ray allen? LOL

I don't see the Cavs getting a lot in return for Varejao..He's not nearly as good a player as he thinks he is.

glad you've rethought that. gadz is overpaid and bell is another in a glut of mediocre backcourt players.
