DARK SIDE OF FOOTBALL

Why Can't Cleveland Win?

When the Cleveland Browns returned to the NFL, it was with the promise of bringing a winner to Cleveland. Instead, they became the worst team of the 21st Century.

For those not aware, VICE built on the success of their "Dark Side of the Ring" series with the new "Dark Side of Football."

It's a 6-part series documenting some of the biggest controversies and talking points in NFL history. Of course, the Browns are so huge that they're basically the only organization with an entire episode decided to their history and... well, losing. Bernie Kosar, Jay Crawford and the never-one-to-miss-a-media-opportunity Hue Jackson are just some of the notable interviewees.

Fortunately -as we now know - there's a happy, yet-to-be-fully-written ending.

For those that can't access the above link (or those that would like to add it to their Browns library) I have uploaded the above episode for download (available for 15 days beginning today):

I am going to partake.

But before I do, their initial lack of success was partly attributable to getting the shaft from the NFL in not getting the sweetheart extra expansion Draft picks, and more comprehensive Expansion Draft, Carolina and Jacksonville did because those two franchises succeeded too quickly for the Commissioner's taste after each made the Playoffs in their second fucking year.

And the just bad luck and bad scouting in those first drafts. Franchise success is determined by QB play. Or a dominant defense. It was really bad luck, and poor planning, that led to the 3-4 cornerstones of the franchise being crippled before either really developed.

Couch and Brown for sure had injury bad luck. But go look at the 2001 draft. You could have thrown a dart in rounds 1 and 2 and gotten a pro bowler. We got Gerard Warren and Quincy Morgan.

Kind of amazing to compare Gerard Warren and Quincy Morgan to our other round 1 and 2 picks for the first 15 years of the rebirth - they easily qualify into the top 25%. How sad.

I forgot to add that is wasn't really luck that Couch got crippled before he grew into the game.

The O-Lines put around him were criminal. I think he led the NFL in sacks taken during his first three years. 166 sacks in 62 games (the last 15 games or so he did not start and pad the stats).

He took 56 sacks his rookie year. 51 sacks his second year. 107 sacks in 29 games.

He was beat to death.

If there was ever a case where a player should be allowed to sue the organization, it's Tim Couch.
