Chris Broussard (insider):
I also like Vince Carter, but with J-Kidd gone, his days with the Nets are probably numbered, too. I've been told by league sources that the Nets are willing to send Carter to Indiana for Jermaine O'Neal. If O'Neal receives a clean bill of health within the next week, a person with knowledge of the situation says that there's a 70 percent chance of this trade going down.

If I'm Ferry, I'd put a call in about Carter. The Nets aren't thrilled with the 4 year deal they just signed him to, so they might want to dump him for deals that end sooner (O'Neal is signed through 09/10 and makes $40+ million over the next two years).

Carter's not the best player and sometimes he takes nights off/is hurt often, but even in Jersey, he was the first option. Sure, Kidd was the better player/bigger name, but Carter was the guy expected to get points and get to the line. In Cleveland, he'd be the second option. He wouldn't have to take all the hits inside, wouldn't have the pressure to score every night (as that'd be all on LeBron)...

The rumors are that the Nets will be trading him to Indiana, so they'd be willing to trade him in-conference... Carter is 31 and won't be involved with New Jersey's rebuilding...

Just a thought.

Benny you and I are on the same wave length

I was driving home from work heard about the Kidd trade and instantly thought we should give Rod Thorn a call about VC

ya hes got his issues but hes pretty darn good and playing with LeBron will only make him better

if we could get rid of hughes in the deal im down with it, but pavs and him are gonna box it out.

Carter and O'Neal are actually 2 players who fit the profile of big salaried players on bad or rebuilding teams who could get dealt for ending contracts.

Carter might be a decent fit as a 2nd versatile perimeter scorer. There wouldn't be much pressure on him playing with LeBron.
His contract would be the worst part of any deal.

Can't say I'd be 100% for getting Carter but it also wouldn't be that bad a move depending on the cost.

Well why don't we have RJ instead? I know he sounds like a girl but he's much better and younger by 3 years. Is he not being shopped?

I would also trade for JO but I highly doubt Larry Bird wants to help us out

I would ask about VC though...Drew and some others may be able to land him but maybe not...who knows

Im still pissed about Manu

People may want to criticize him for all the shots he takes but at least the guy is consistent and is efficient...I don't mind it as long as he's efficient and he's always been hovering around the 45% mark from the field, 35% from 3 and 80% from the line... That's not too bad and adding another shooter next to LeBron, like Carter, is great...

Another bad rap on him is his injuries... Sure he's been labeled as injured prone but look at his games played the last 4 years(starting in 03-04):

73
77
79
82

And according to his stats on 82 games, he is actually a pretty good man-to-man defender and is a good team defender...

I'm not going gaga over him since he is 31 and has nagging injuries, but I would take him...

Maybe something like this:

Drew Gooden
Ira Newble
Sasha Pavlovic
Cash

for

Vince Carter
Jamaal Magloire

the Cavs may have to throw a pick or two in there, but for a bona fide all-star? done.

As for Jefferson, it's more likely that the Nets would trade the older wing player before the young one (due to his contract and age, Carter less desirable for them).

Also, that Carter for O'Neal rumor was pre-Kidd trade. Not sure if the Nets still want to pick up Jermaine at this point (like I pointed out before, he's owed a TON of money the next two years) if they're trying to A) go young B) cut salary.

I agree that they'd need to throw in something else but with the Nets rebuilding phase in full effect, I don't think they'll get as much as they would for VC with teams knowing that they want to trade him and that he'll probably want to get traded..

I'm also guessing his nagging injuries and lack of effort will scare some people off...

Honestly if they go out and get Jermaine for VC, I think it could be a very good deal as it still puts them into contention in the East and maybe even a better team... I mean this isn't that bad of a team:

Sean Williams
Jermaine O'Neal
Richard Jefferson
???
Devin Harris

Get a shooter in there and they don't look too bad...

A Cavs trade like that can still make them competitive for now--as Sasha and Drew can produce now--and in the future--Sasha and Drew still have some potential... Plus Newble is expiring and Drew will be next year...

Just thinking out loud... The thought is interesting, but if someone said pick a wing player, I'd pick Mike Miller...

Miller fits better alongside LeBron but Carter would be more likely to allow James to have an off night every now and then.

but it all depends what the Nets want to do, what their post-Kidd plans are. If they want to contend in the immediate future, then O'Neal may be attractive. If they want to rebuild, get some cap space and make a free agent splash when they move to Brooklyn, they may want to dump salary.

Anyways, this is definitely something that the Cavs should explore (O'Neal as well, but I think the Cavs need more backcourt help).

Carters on/off court +/- is actually better than Kidd's, interesting given Carter's rep as a scorer who doesn't make his teammates better and can't defend and Kidd's rep as a great defenders who can spin straw into gold. Pavs hasn't been giving jack doody, and Gooden's empty numbers, so I'd do it, although with Larry actually playing better ball than Carter right now...WHY DO YOU START PLAYING WELL A WEEK BEFORE THE DEADLINE? IF WE ACTUALLY GET RID OF YOU NOW, WILL YOU ACTUALLY HAVE FOUND YOUR GAME? $20 says he'll make us look bad no matter what we do. It's no-win with Hughes.

I say no to Vince. I dont like the idea of having two big game wings on the same team. I do not think that is efficient.

If we aren't getting a PG or a PF, dealing with a high volume 2/3 isn't going to help unless he is Michael Redd, or a shooter of his type.

Vince Carter is not in a good situation. He's been playing better since he got the cortisone shot, but he has already gotten the rep this year that he is lazy and since his contract was renewed over the summer for $61 Million over 4 years it isnt like he is an expriing contract. This would give us another guy who feels like he should take over 15-20 shots/game along with Larry Hughes. Hughes has played better of late, I would rather have him because at least he doesnt have the ego that "Vinsanity" has, if you can still give him a nickname. Speaking of which, maybe they can send him to the Knicks. An over-priced guard who is past his prime and highly overpaid. It isnt like the Knicks have any of those. Then he can have a Knickname.:chuckles:

why did jersey sign him to that bogus deal in the 1st place?

Carter's contract is beyond awful... you think we hate Larry's contract, imagine having Carter's for another year (and $17.5M) after Larry's has ended. Ummm, no thanks. :puke:
