VR is slowly starting to become a reality for us gamers. There are several options available right now that I wanted to hear everyone's opinions on.

Have any of you tried them?
Does anyone own a system?
What games do you play?
What are your thoughts/experiences?
Pros?
Cons?
Oculus Rift vs. HTC Vive vs. Playstation VR vs. ?????

I never tried it. I get vertigo, you think it would make me motion sick? Plus a monitor, keyboard, and mouse has been my home for games since the early 90's.

I haven't tried it either. Since I make all of my electronics related purchases online now, I haven't stepped foot into a Best Buy or similar brick-and-mortar shop in several years to see what the systems are like. I was curious to get the opinions of those who have tried them or who actually own a setup.

VR seems like it's too early in it's lifecycle to produce any games worth playing.

I've only tried (and own) PSVR so far. It's really freaking cool but there aren't enough games for me to want to play it all the time. The tech demos are really cool but the shit thing about PSVR is the space needed, calibration and the fact that you're wired in.

One thing that made me really intrigued for it's future is that there's a tech demo for a Heist game where you're sitting at a table. There's a cigar in front of you and you can pick up the cigar with one controller, light it with the other, bring it close to your face and when you breathe in/out like you're smoking, it actually looks like you're smoking. The headset has an inline mic, so it uses that to hear when you're pulling in air and blowing out.

1) I've tried all of them.
2) I own an older Rift dev kit, and I've occasionally have an HTC Vive.
3) Random shit.. but when Fallout 4 VR drops.. that will get a lot of attention from me on the Vive... Also, there's a new Bridge Commander out, looks amazing, and it's multiplayer.

4) My experiences are that VR is ready to rock.. I've been following this technology since the 90s. I still own a Virtual Boy. :chuckle: But I absolutely love it.. I don't get any sense of nausea or motion sickness like I would on the older platforms or even the earlier devkits. The Vive, Rift, and PSVR all are great in different ways, but my preference is for the Vive -- although the Rift's touch controls do look amazing.

5) The pros are full immersion and an excuse to buy some really nice headphones.. :chuckle: The cons are the wires and the screendoor effect that's still somewhat noticeable. Keep in mind, I use a ROG PG348Q as my daily driver, so I prefer the absolute best image quality possible on my display -- however, given the degree of immersion, I will gladly sacrifice image quality for three-dimensionality and motion tracking.

6) Up to the point that Oculus released their touch controls; it was HTC Vive all day long... No question..

Now that the Rift has touch controls, and it's temporarily lowered it's price by like $200; IMHO, the Rift makes the most sense! I mean.. right now the Rift is $399 with controllers vs $799 (Vive) with controllers... There's absolutely no way I'd buy a Vive today over Rift even though I think, headset-wise, the Vive is superior in most facets. The 2-1 price differential is just, not something one can ignore. You could actually buy a used GTX 1080 for the $400 you saved between the two closely matched setups...

The only thing you're really missing out on with the Rift is the room-scale experience, which to me, makes it so much more fun to play.. especially with the wife and kids/nephews, etc... Everyone will enjoy the Vive in a room that's large enough to really move around.. The Rift has room-scale sensors, and can be enabled for such, but.. it's not the same experience as the Vive, AFAIK...

PSVR is great.. I've used it a few times briefly and it's actually a lot better than you'd expect. I don't own a setup though and this isn't the direction I would go as a PC user so... I'll just skip it for now.. But, if you do a lot of console gaming, then this is a totally viable option. Personally though, I would just as soon get a Rift (@ $399) and again, spend the money I saved on an SLI setup.

Oh.. and btw.. if the Rift price were to go back to $599+$100 for the controllers; then I would get the Vive without thinking twice. It is definitely the superior setup; although the Rift Touch controls are seemingly much better; the overall visual / tracking / room-scale experience with the Vive is definitely superior to the Rift... I think Facebook might keep the Rift at $399 for at least a few more weeks/months to try and gain some ground (or maybe they think they're going to lose their lawsuit with Zenimax?)

So with all that said, I think we're at a point where VR is about to take off... Fallout 4 VR and the obviously upcoming Skyrim VR are going to set the stage for new wave of users coming on-board....

I had an Oculus dev kit but I sold it. Just wasn't really into it. Granted, it was a dev kit, so motion sickness was an issue. I'll probably try VR again in the near future once prices drop a bit more and there's more VR content available.

I will say that playing Team Fortress 2 in VR was really cool. I just couldn't do it for more than about ten minutes without feeling like I had to vomit. It was awesome being able to look left and right while still aiming straight, though. Gives you a huge advantage (especially for me, as I primarily play sniper) because you can check your flank while still shooting at people in front of you.

Can definitely attest to the motion sickness with the devkits... But give the retail releases a shot, they're WAY better...
