Energized Hughes eager to face Arenas challenge

CLEVELAND - For Larry Hughes, this time is for keeps.

Technically, the Cavaliers' standout swingman already has had the maiden voyage against his old mates, the Washington Wizards, a month ago in the preseason opener in D.C.

The game tonight with the red-hot Wizards at Quicken Loans Arena is the real deal, though, and Hughes knows it. Especially his battle with All-Star and friend Gilbert Arenas.

The Wizards are off to a 5-1 start. The Cavs are 5-2 and sitting on a tidy four-game winning streak. That makes tonight quite a meaningful November test, especially for Hughes.

He'll ask coach Mike Brown to be assigned to guard Arenas, who just might be the hottest player in the NBA right now.

``I will ask for him and guard him,'' said Hughes, who is coming off his best game of the season against the Orlando Magic, scoring 22 points with nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Wizards coach Eddie Jordan was a second- round pick of the Cavs in the 1977 NBA Draft. . . . Wizards assistant coach Phil Hubbard is a graduate of Canton McKinley High School.

Re: Washington @ Cleveland

This is going to be a tough matchup for the Cavs. The Wizards are playing very good ball, and I suspect that Arenas and Jamison are both going to have stellar games offensively. Importantly, we'll want to just contest their shots, rotate, and play decent defense. Maybe make their other players beat us. Their bench is looking pretty solid too, maybe better overall, but I don't think many teams have guys like Damon Jones and Donyell Marshall coming off the bench.

On the offensive end, this is going to be a game where we again look to take it inside. 1) Inside shots have shorter rebounds, and since we're against a terrible rebounding team, this should translate into many second chance points the way that Z, Gooden, and Marshall have been working the boards lately. 2) Getting their bigs in foul trouble would be great, and getting 25+ free throws would go a long way toward getting a win, especially if we keep up the good free throw shooting. 3) Hughes and Lebron have showed time and again that they have the ability to break down defenses, penetration should screw up their defensive scheme, even if they're tearing it up defensively as of late.

Its going to be a close one I think, look for a lit up scoreboard

I'm not ready to lay down at Washington's feet because they beat San Antonio at home. Yes, they played well, but it was a combination of Arenas going berserk and Tim Duncan looking awful. Did anyone see that game? He missed easy shots he would have normally made. Ginobli and Parker both had +20 games.

yea i was there at the game. the wizards are the truth this year.
