Why do you think he’s worth that top dollar pay day based on his performance the last couple seasons?

4 sacks in 8 games and 5 sacks in 16 games over the last two. Another year older at 32.

I think the most essential skill set we need for an edge to come in here and play opposite Myles is the ability to *consistently* get after the QB.

If consistently getting after the QB is the goal, perhaps you'd look at "pressures" instead of sacks to get the clearer picture of where Watt ranks among the rest of the league?

Spoiler alert: It's high.

Which explains why he's getting paid. He's getting paid because he's still really good.

I don't think a counting stat like sacks over the past two years is an accurate indicator of what he can do on the football field.

I think Watt, if healthy, is a top-10 edge in football. My top-10 in no particular order, just a list with numbers for counting to 10.
  1. Myles
  2. Mack
  3. Bosa
  4. Bosa
  5. Chase Young
  6. Von Miller
  7. JJ Watt
  8. Cameron Jordan
  9. TJ Watt
  10. Chandler Jones?
The only players on that list I'd confidently take for 2021 over JJ Watt are Myles, Khalil, Joey Bosa and Chase Young. If someone said he's a top-5 defensive end in football, I wouldn't argue with that person.

So yeah, the man's getting paid, even though he didn't put up sacks on a depleted Houston defense.

Was Arizona's defense good last year?

I would've too, and I'd bet the FO would've done something on the margins to make this contract work.

I'm sure they could've made that contract work. It's just that'd rather make a contract like that work for a different player, probably playing a different position.

When it was on, it was on. When it was off, it was average at best. They were wildly unhealthy last year. First Chandler, then the DBs.

Well JJ Watt certainly doesn't miss games

Sure.

I'd argue that the ability to obtain a talent like Watt is rare enough that you make it work rather than hope a similar player is eventually available.

And maybe a) the FO did the math and determined Watt wasn't worth that contract (I'd disagree) or b) they know have enough inside info that other players will be available.

I think its more likely he didn't want to come here.

Well that would say a lot about how they feel about Von Miller too

11 hurries - 32 of all defenders
13 knock downs - 18th of all defenders
29 pressures - 31st of all defenders

Im not saying he’s bad, but he’s certainly lost a few steps through injury and age...

Kind of sad watching Mack Wilson recruit on Twitter when he won't be on the team next year.

So he’s a top 32 defensive pass rusher , while being significantly more double teamed than anyone else in the league.

Do you think those stats stand on their own merit, and are independent of the circumstances the player is in?

Because I do not. Therefore, using them to evaluate a player is foolish.

The players surrounding the individual have a role in those stats. The coaching of the defense play a role in those stats. The competition the player is up against play a role in those stats. The score situation plays a role in those stats... there are so many other variables, that they just aren't that valuable.

The Texans are possibly the worst defense in the entire NFL without Watt. JJ Watt, when healthy, is still an absolute game wrecker. The only question in my mind is his health.

Exactly, teams have the ability to contextualize these numbers.

He's just an incredibly talented and smart player that is scheme versatile and moved around like a weapon at like six different roles.

$23 millon over two years guaranteed is...not even that much.

You think Pat McAfee's net worth is an aberration? Just wait until athletes begin dominating the sports talk news landscape.
This would actually be great. I'd much rather hear from them than many of the clueless media members we hear from today.

On a related note, I hope these incredibly stupid "debate" shows (First Take, Undisputed, First Things First, etc) go away in the near future and shift more towards the format of analyzing, breaking news and intelligent/insightful discussion. Along the lines of what Pat McAfee and other former athletes are doing.

I haven't been able to watch ESPN in years due to their scripted, fake drama bullshit shows that run on a goddamn loop.
