Week 12 (11/30): Ravens (3-7) @ Browns (2-8) [8:30 PM EST, ESPN]

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He has never made a 51 yarder in his career. His longest EVER was 48 yards, dating back to his college career. The guy is also not known to have a big leg.

But....saying it isn't in his range is somehow this huge logic stretch, amirite.

Well, Andy has made ONE three point shot in his NBA career. Would anyone seriously claim his range extended out to the 3 point line? It is basically the same thing. That 51 yard attempt was not in his range. Though, it was possible with luck, or if he had had enough wind at his back, that he could have made it. But, incredibly unlikely as he had never successfully kicked one over 50 yards in his career.

wait, people watched the end of that game and thought the browns were actually trying to win??

as a fan base we should be doing shots in celebration. it would take an absolute and total shocker for this team not to get a top 3 pick now.

Precisely. "Not in his range" does not mean he could never hit a 51-yarder. It means it's a low percentage kick and you don't want to be betting on it in that situation unless you have absolutely ZERO choice...which they did have...until Pettine mangled the clock.

Anyways, I'll see you all in the Tank Thread!!!

I was there. Stayed the entire game and cheered for the Browns, despite any pro tank feelings. I have to be at work at 7.

No one can ever question my fan hood. Ever.

I was there and it's hard not to cheer. But looking now it's hard not to think it was a great game. The question going forward is Davis or Manziel as starter

So... Hartline catches the ball down to the 40. You have 2 timeouts and 45 seconds left. Even a 10 year old playing Madden knows what to do there.

If you call a timeout right there, your whole playbook is open including the middle of the field thanks to the extra TO and you get the time to draw something up and run at least a couple plays. Instead, Pettine did nothing and pissed away 27 seconds. By the time Davis snapped it at 18 seconds and slid in bounds (it was stupid but he never should've been put in the situation), Pettine had to burn a TO just to stop the clock from running out. With 8 seconds left at that point, he couldn't run anything that needed time to develop so he positioned the ball with his 2nd TO.

It's easy to play Monday Morning QB like you're doing here. I'm sure Pettine would do things differently in hindsight, but I don't think he managed the clock that poorly in the heat of the moment-- the Browns were in a position to win the football game, or at worst go to OT, and that's how Pettine managed the clock. We can argue about Coons' range all we want but it's not like he was being asked to do the impossible. It was a makable kick, and if he misses, the game goes to OT.

With regards to the timeouts, again, it's easy to say how stupid something is in hindsight. If you use your 2nd timeout there with 40 seconds left, what happens if there's a sack on the next play? What happens if you lose yards or go down in bounds for a minimal gain? Then you burn your last timeout or you're scrambling to the line. Either way, you bring about more complex issues. With regards to your point, it goes both ways.... you're just assuming the best case scenario. As a coach, you want that extra timeout in your back pocket. Which leads me to my next point....

With 40 seconds and a running clock, there should be plenty of time to call a play and snap the ball with minimal time off the clock but communication seemed to be an issue with playing the 3rd string QB. But, at the time, I'm sure Pettine thought they were close enough to FG range to have a shot to win the game, and at worst head to OT, and I don't have a problem with that.

In all of these situations, you simply burn your 3rd timeout with 30 something seconds left. That's enough time to throw down the middle and spike. That's enough time to run multiple plays to the sideline. All of which are much better options than having the ball snapped with 18 seconds left.

You're right that they should've been able to get a play off but there was clearly a communication issue. So. Why. Not. Call. Timeout?

There is no football universe where it makes more sense to call a play with 18 seconds left following a communication breakdown vs. taking a timeout with 45 seconds left to allow your team to get collected and draw up a play. Pettine is notorious for leaving timeouts on the board at the end of games... this is just one instance of many. I bet 90%+ of NFL coaches would've called a timeout in that situation. We just happen to have a guy who doesn't.

If you don't have the leg to kick it 51 yards you shouldn't be a kicker in the NFL.

Agree to disagree. I think we're in splitting hairs territory...

Despite everything, the Browns were still tied and had a 51 yard FG attempt to win the game. We can argue some stuff that we'd do differently in hindsight but again, tie game, 51 yard FG to win. I think most teams would like their chances there....

Pettine to Davis: We can NOT... under ANY circumstances, risk leaving 20 seconds on the clock for Matt Schaub after Cannonball Coons powers a 50+ yarder through

Worst franchise in professional sports.

Please go 2-14. Please fire Ray Farmer.

Me and my wife went to the game. It was an amazing experience. The large crowd of fans walking down the street outside the stadium after the game all looking depressed was a surreal moment.

No one was talking either. It was just hundreds of Browns fans who've become so numb to this shit it felt like we were all Zombies and we were walking to the bridge on E. 9th to just jump off that muthafucka.

See...I just don't get this. Maybe it's because if you're willing to pay to watch that shit, you're probably not the type to want to see a loss.

But i think the large majority of fans watching at home were laughing giddily.

Haslam to Pettine: You're fired.
