Week 2 - March 1-7 Thread

Some notes...

-Bravo to Bo.. had a great night..
-Double Bravo to Clase/Nikhazy.. 60 pitches, 80 % strikes.. all 14 of Clase's pitches were strikes.. Nikhazy had both his FB and Slider working masterfully..

Through 6 1/2 innings.. 4-0 good guys.. not much offense other than Bo..

Anyone else think Nikhazy is right there with Allen if he hasn't passed him up?

I haven't been able to listen to the game, what has Bo done?

very close, would be my appraisal.. Passing happens in the last ten days of ST.. until then, these guys have to keep the bullets out of the gun so they cannot shoot themselves in the foot.. It's usually the players who decide who earns the spot.. not the manager/coaches..

Bo belted a couple..good swings..

When it comes to Nikhazy, he's had a great spring, but the problem is the spot open for him right now is a bullpen spot... Do we want to put him in the bullpen for MLB experience or do we wanna keep him stretched out?

I think cause it's a marathon we need him to be stretched out...

Though that being stated... Allen may still get the spot starts cause he has MLB experience, but I'd be very surprised if Nikhazy doesn't make his MLB debut this season with how he has come out this spring...

Im not sure if he's jumped Allen just yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is 1A and 1B with him in the very least...

Six or eight innings probably won't change the pecking order immediately, but Allen and Nikhazy will put more pressure on the FO to make a decision on TMac.

That doesn't take into consideration Cantillo.

******

As Bibee and the big five in the pen begin to get some game action, the team prospects suddenly begin to look better. I think it's now 27 Ks in the last two games.

*****

Several of the recent home runs have been wind blown, so take them with a huge grain of salt. But in spite of the wind, those homers indicate that at the very least our guys are putting some solid at bats together.

*******

I dont believe for a minute that Martinez and Schneeman are being truly looked at as candidates for the 2B position.

Brito is really struggling, and the FO doesn't like to begin the season with true rookies, anyway. Arias still looks like Arias, maybe worse. That leaves Freeman

We have a few formerly hopeful looking youngsters that the FO naturally wants to put off any permanent decision on, but at some point you have to rip the bandaid off...esp when playing them lessens the chance of winning

I wonder if JRod is gonna get PT in RF. We already have a LF, so he has to make the team as a RF, if he makes it at all.

He has played a lot of RF so they want him to get LF reps and ABs

In the minors, Rod has been 225 LF and 442 RF -- so yes more RF but not like he doesn't know the LF reads already. Noel, his competition for RHB OF is 159 RF and 80 LF. So, note, Brennan and Noel are getting the first cracks at RF and Brennan is more of a guy that they will shift around when Kwan and/or Thomas need a day off (if not a Freeman/Schneemann).

As of now, it looks like Arias has the leg up at 2nd (just going on 3 starts in 4 days) but who knows for sure. Brito is struggling (1 for 16) which is fine being first real ST action against starters (he got 15 ABs last year in ST - probably all or most as a sub). Freeman and Schneemann get a lot of action at lots of positions. Martinez would be their utility competition but is also struggling (1 for 14). Schneemann with Arias leading at 2nd, is basically the back-up SS. And, it helps that both can play OF. But still 2-1/2 weeks of ST left.

As for Allen vs Nikhazy, Allen will get every chance to compete. He is getting a start on Sunday instead of Williams. Williams can pitch after him (as they both went Tuesday) or Williams starts on Monday Split Squad outing. So we shouldn't read too much into it but McK went to the back fields to work on his stuff and Williams is not taking the 2nd pitcher slot if Allen wasn't going to be given every shot to win the 5th role or even Loogy role (had a .200/.650 vs LHB in 2023 at mlb).

I think we have reached the point where consistent performance starts to matter.

JRod will get playing time in LF during the spring, but he is a few slots down the actual depth chart. If Noel can be sent to CBus and he doesn’t get it going, JRod might get the spot if he continues his strong spring.

Second base remains open, Arias and Freeman are your front runners, but Angel’s SH and Schneemann’s LH bat could factor in if they go on a tear. They all can play multiple positions, so offensive performance is definitely a key factor.

Lots of wiggle room, these are not set in stone.

Freeman 2B/CF/SS/3B and probably LF/1B
Arias 2B/SS/3B/1B/RF/LF emergency everything.
Angel 2B/3B/CF/LF and probably 1B
Schneemann 2B/SS/CF/LF/3B/RF and probably 1B

Everybody has their hitting shoes on today, except Arias, who has swung and missed five times in two Ks.

Manzo, Schneemann, and Hedges have homered.

Schneemann and Angel have tripled.

Hedges has doubled.

Freeman and Noel have singles.

7-0 middle of the third.
