Week #5 - Baker Bounce Back @ Bolts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don’t think anyone here has stated that Baker was better?

But, uh… same TDs (instead of runs), Baker is 80+. EPA is so heavily influenced that TDs skew it.

Literally earlier in this thread there were people posting both player's stat lines and suggesting it was inappropriate for someone to say Baker was worse today than Herbert.

I know 76 pages is a lot to sift through, but it was definitely said earlier :chuckle:

Oh, well, I saw it and totally misinterpreted it. I truly took it as he wasn’t as bad as the initial reaction was. Probably was wrong.

In close to fifty years of watching the Browns this was one of the most entertaining and hard-fought games I’ve ever seen live & in person. I couldn’t keep track of all the injuries but name after name was posted on the scoreboard. Momentum kept going back and forth. Browns fans were barking and supporting all game.

By the time we got the ball up the point the team was out of gas and we all sensed it. The Chargers on the last two possessions were obviously defending against any medium or long passes (their defensive strength anyway) and we didn’t have the pass protection or deep threats that could get open.

Team fought hard and lost. Shame that so many fans don’t get that, but it doesn’t diminish the pride Browns fans at the game felt.

SoFi stadium BTW is outstanding. We were able to hit the restroom, get food, and get drinks elsewhere during halftime, not even missing kickoff. Best stadium structure I’ve ever seen. Great fan experience. Only complaint was the Chargers fans were pretty lame and there was a blaring a-hole PA announcer on every play totally overdoing the rah rah shit. Chargers also have a crappy 20 piece “band” that the average high school in NEO would put to shame. Celebrities in attendance were lame - Keyshawn, Pat Sajak? Not exactly Lakers A listers.

Two of Hebert's TDs were absolute gifts that any backup QB in the league could make the completion. Hebert also missed his share of throws.

But Baker isn't even replacement level, and Hebert is somehow great?

I think your judgement is skewed.

No one wants to talk about that Baker only took 1 sack and no turnovers with our 4th and 5th string tackles in there. It sucks he wasted time at the begining of that final drive, but we lost the gsame because of inuries, execution, and some really bad officiating.

No. People were saying that Baker was shit. The stats say otherwise.

Mayfield wasn't shit, but he certainly wasn't as good as his counting stats would indicate. If you do nothing but look at the box score, you'll see the numbers and think he played out of this world good.

But the reality is that the Browns had an all-timer of a game from a YAC perspective. And I mean hey, yards on screens and missed tackles count just the same as yards gained through the air, but I don't think the QB deserves credit for a screen pass behind the LOS going for 30 yards or for a simple 15 yard seam route picking up almost 60 yards of YAC because of a missed tackle.

He was way better against Kansas City even though his stats were worse.

My overarching point is that the Browns have really struggled all year, including today, in non-optimal situations and I think most of that falls on Mayfield.

Man, this game pissed me off. It's likely been covered above, but I hate seeing the Browns offense put up over FORTY points only to lose. This time with NO turnovers.

The refs can go to hell. Abolish rewarding the QB with free yards on defensive pass interference. Make them do the down over. That cheap-ass Brady bullshit (was hilarious watching Mac Jones doing to him a week ago). And if you're gonna call it, make sure it's DPI in the first place. That, watching the Browns lineman getting Mick Foley'd by the Chargers defender... yet getting called for an offensive hold...

Atop that, really sick of seeing Myles getting held on every play. On the sack, he had 2 people tackling him.

Football Clippers and Herbert are on the shit list going forward. I don't want to see players prosper with that bullshit for the purpose of having a new "passing champion".

Fair enough, and I even said I don't think Mayfield played up to his own potential today, despite being solid as hell for the majority of the game.

If only he could have gotten a couple of gifted TD throws from blown safety coverage to help his advanced stats for actual yards the ball traveled in the air like Hebert did, your evaluation of his performance today would be completely different. Right?

I realize you keep going back to the “what about the two deep balls that the Browns blew! Why credit Herbert for those?!” well, but you’re making yourself look silly.

Those two bombs aside, Herbert consistently came through with conversions on 3rd/4th down and 5+ to go with his arm today.

He was routinely placed in “the defense knows we absolutely aren’t going to run the ball on this play” scenarios and came through repeatedly. There was never a down or distance today that the Chargers’ fans and coaches didn’t feel 100% confident in Herbert’s ability to convert.

That’s something Baker just hasn’t done enough this year. The Browns have been painfully bad in obvious passing situations the entire season.
