Week #8 - Bring on the Stillers!!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Well I'm just gonna have another drink cause these guys simply don't agree with my opinions....

I’ll say this:

Today is proof of why I hate stats like “When a QB’s team is trailing in the 4th, here’s how often he brings them back.”

Baker had a great series on not just 1, but 2 potential game winning drives, and the result will still just fuel the fire that he somehow can’t bring you back or deliver when needed.

Yes. He made throws where he didn’t get help.

He also managed to miss, IMO, the biggest throw of the 4th.

When Beckham is open like that, for what amounts to a throw that will win the game, you can’t sail it over his head.

Lot of blame to spread around but we are constantly hampered by our QB not being able to make rather routine NFL throws when big plays present themselves. So when we do have a mistake, like a drop, it then is dually back breaking.

Again, lots of blame to go around but I still think the biggest offensive limitation we have is our inability to hit big passing plays when we have them open.

Gotta be honest on that OBJ throw.

When all 22 is out, can’t wait to see where OBJs eyes are when Baker is in the wind up. My guess is he’s looking at the goal post or the safety on the left side of the field, which is why when he does turn his head he has to reach backwards.

Odell quit on that route because he didn’t expect the ball. If he continues up through the safety’s, it’s a TD. He doesn’t so it’s an overthrow.

I can’t edit in the link but look.
Odell has horrible footwork and tries to bail himself out by jumping early after doing a double take on the incoming safety. If he continues down the seam, the safety he feels threatened by doesn’t even remotely have a play on this ball. Because he looks for the defender, he flattens out a post route, and then has to readjust the entire route to go up field.

It wasn’t even a bad throw. Odell just manages, by the time he sees the ball, to completely forget how to track a ball and run. I disagree that he gator armed this, and I also disagree that he could have caught it. But the reason it wasn’t catchable wasn’t Baker.

Looking at that video, it looks like the throw evenly split the 2 defenders which is where you want it to be. Odell slowed down, and if he would have kept his stride the pass would have hit him right on the numbers.

Somebody said Mayfield sailed that throw, I think that is an incorrect assessment of what happened.

Look at where the DB #20 is coming from. Odell was running over the top of #20 getting behind him and going towards the pylon. That’s where the throw should’ve been.

The reason why Odell slowed down is because the ball was coming short of where he was going. Baker didn’t need to split the defenders there. He needed to throw over the top of #20 and towards the pylon which is where Odell was running.

When Odell saw the ball and saw that it was short of where he was running he had to slow down. The ball lands in a spot where #20 can come over and make a play on it but it should’ve went over the top so that only Odell had a shot at it.

It was bad ball placement.

If that throw was any more towards the sideline like you say it should have been #20 would have blown Beckham up. I can agree that Beckham needed to change his course but that's what receivers are supposed to do, track the ball and run under it. He slowed down. Then he jumped for the ball. If he would have stayed in stride the ball would have been right on his body, but he would have been turned the wrong way so it would have needed to be an over the shoulder catch. The ball was dead on for that if Odell would have kept his stride.

At least that's how it looks to me based on that footage. I'll be glad to re-evaluate if the all-20 shows something different.

Holy crap.

If you’re running a post to the seam, the ball should be between the safety’s.

This video shows once the ball is out- of COURSE the safety is biting to Odell’s route. You fell for the same trap versus the Chargers on a late play- a screen shot showing Odell “open”. When the ball is in the air, defensive player position does not matter. They’re reacting to a ball in the air.

Flat out. Odell is running a post. Your goal as that receiver if the safety’s play two deep (which they are) that you’re trying to run the post directly into the middle.

If Baker watches Odell run a post and throws to the pylon, it’s a pick. And we chastise him for a horrible throw.

Odell didn’t expect the ball. Took his eyes off of it to check the defender because he quit on the route. By the time Baker was in the wind, Odell had slowed his route instead of finishing it, and then had to make a last second leap to even touch the ball because he wasted valuable time looking at a safety. He got hit anyway. Finish the route, and you’re celebrating an Odell touchdown.

If you look at Odell’s last two steps before he jumps you’ll see that they’re behind him because the ball is not going to where he’s running. Baker threw the ball as if Odell was supposed to sit in a zone but Odell was running open at an angle.

The ball should be out in front of Odell and over #20. Instead the ball is placed behind where Odell is running forcing him to slow his steps. It also gives #20 time to make a play on the ball.

The ball should’ve been over the defenders head and at the angle Odell was running because he was open and running behind #20.

I promise you’ll see when you have a wider view. Odell was going to get behind #20 and beat him at an angle towards the pylon. Baker threw the ball shirt of where Odell was running. That’s why Odell’s last two steps before he jumps are gather steps to slow down and adjust to a ball that is coming behind where he was initially running.

He’s not running behind the safety. The safety is closing because the ball was released twenty yards away.

When we see A22, you’ll see that there’s about ten yards between 20 and Odell when Baker winds. If Baker throws it towards the pylon, it’s a pick and an insanely bad read because 20 won’t have to close- he just stands and waits. Odell isnt reading 20 on a post. His sole goal in two deep is to box out the SS (he does), and then split. He doesn’t. At no point was he ever trying to run to the opposite pylon or behind the FS.

Edit- in good faith, I rewatched the play. I can see where you’re coming from, but don’t think Sutton at the time of wind up was going to be thrown over nor was Odell TRYING to get to where he’d need for that specific throw. Sutton flatens out as Odell sort of stumbles. If Odell goes deep on this route, we’re both celebrating an Odell clutch TD. If Baker throws it to the pylon, Sutton probably picks it off.

If we were at midfield, I’d one hundred percent agree- same ply Herbert hit to Williams in LA on the post.

If the ball was thrown the way you said it would have been overthrown and Odell wouldn't have gotten to it at all. Slow down, then jump. That tells you that the ball was placed to hit him on stride if he wouldn't have slowed down.

We’ll see when we watch the tape.

imo this also shows how important kareem hunt is
Kareem Hunt is such a luxury. The entire league doesn't have that. Soo, we shouldn't be depending on him or feeling like we lose because of not having Kareem.
