Damn. Couple things really jump out to me watching those plays.

The first is how good his fundamentals are. His positioning and awareness are fantastic, and he goes straight up for clean contests and blocks. You see guys so often have good blocks but commit body fouls, so the block is lost. Mobley blocks and contests clean without fouling guys, and that's huge.

The second thing that strikes me is his economy of movement. He's not hyper, and doesn't spazz himself out of position. All of his defensive movements are in control, with no reaching or really even risk taking. When he blocks, there's no highlight-real swat into the stands. He simply gets enough of the ball, and recovers or controls a high percentage of his blocks. That's unusual, because a lot of blocks by other players just end up as out of bounds to the other team. Mobley does what his necessary to make the best play, and that's it.

Reminds me a bit of Duncan in that sense of always making the right play and being under control. He's springier with more lateral movement, though, which makes him more effective defending on the perimeter than Duncan ever was.

I also think the kind of coordination he shows defensively with his hands -- the ability to track the shooter and get only his hand on the ball -- is a really good sign for him developing offensive skills. He's just so freaking coordinated for a guy that size.

I think we often overlook the value of being a coach's kid. Being expected to do things right from the beginning will carry through. He is going to be very good. Remains to be seen if he is a franchise changer. But I don't think he fails to get there for lack of dedication.

I watched Mobley on D more closely this last game because I wanted to see how he did with the Pacers quality bigs. It was a mixed bag. On the down side he was often a step slow reacting or a couple of feet out of position. On the plus side, his good mobility and ridiculous length allow him to recover like very few can. I think he’ll get toasted quite a bit this year, and being a bit out of position or being a touch late is how you pick up fouls, but with experience, his upside is unquestionable. He can be special on D.

I've been encouraged how he can hold his ground. I thought he would be just pushed around like a leaf and it isn't that easy

I literally thought he would have trouble being a big in the NBA at his weight. I am not worried at all now. His mismatch as far as IQ and quickness outpaces any negatives.

We'll see how he looks when the games start to count, but I'm far less concerned about it now than I did a few weeks ago. The guys on the broadcast said he already put on some weight since summer league, IIRC.

I hope they're erring on the side of caution to make sure he doesn't put on too much too soon and end up fucking up his knees in the long run.

His length was even giving Sabonis trouble. Yeah he was able to push him out of the way, but it didn't keep him from getting Mobley's hand in his face or on the ball.

He uses his length and verticalilty so well already. Just a big surprise how advanced he is defensively.

You are right though. No actual games played so far. I am excited to see what happens next

Well said.

Watching the Bucks/Nets, the way Harden is playing with Claxton... I hope Garland and Mobley can build that pick and roll relationship. Great rim running and passing.

Greek Freak is not messing around. He’s returned to defend the title & I hope he can. Really don’t want to see bullshit mega teams in major media markets winning any rings.

Who can stop him? Nobody can guard him. Very interesting he has added that pull up to his game. He was too focused on 3's The way he can get near the rim and being so long he can hit a high enough percentage of those to really hurt teams I think.

He’s frightening. A mobile guy that size who can drop dimes and score from outside the rim. It‘s a trend. Hopefully Mobley develops in that direction.

The other guy that should be that dominant is Simmons but he doesn’t work on his game. Too bad for him because if he could shoot and had a dominant approach to the game he could be MVP level.

If he ends up having even a decent jumper and 75%+ on FT, Giannis will eventually surpass LeBron, and go down as the GOAT

What a story
