Isaiah Mobley: 2023 SL MVP

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sorry if this was already posted but a consistent scouting report it seems:

Sam Vecenie of The Athletic revealed his projected landing spot for Mobley.

I would imagine Mobley is one of the players I most diverge from consensus. I buy him as an interesting, potential-guarantee guy because of the way his game could translate to what the NBA looks for from modern bigs. He’s a killer passer out of short rolls, and he can shoot, which already gives him an enormous leg up on a lot of bigs in today’s NBA. He has good defensive awareness for the most part and can slide his feet at a really high level, in addition to his 7-foot-3 wingspan. He might not have the athletic tools to play in the NBA, but I’d be willing to pay with a second-round pick to find out if he got into the 45 to 55 range. I’m something of a believer in Mobley.
A guy that can slide his feet, pass the ball extremely well, can shoot the three ball and has a 7’3” wingspan but lacks strength and endurance. Two things that are easily correctable with a NBA caliber strength and conditioning program. A High basket ball IQ is another positive.

Basically he does some of things a guy like Grant Williams does at Boston taken at #22 a couple years ago. It seems this what the Cavz see in Mobley . Getting a guy like this at #49 is a bargain

Him hanging out with Evan in the winter is worth double what we paid for the pick. I love the pick. And yes, I think he has upside as a backup big. He certainly has the size. And so much of pro sports is the mental and he and Evan should be good there now.

He didn't say anything about "strength and endurance" (both of which are correctable). He said Isaiah "might not have the physical tools to play in the NBA". That's very different.

he has size, good iq, passes well, practicing vs his brother daily should only help. I see no reason why he cannot be a capable backup in time

if only it were that easy.

He will have a hard time defending at the NBA level. He is Gobert slow without his ridiculous length. its not that I hate the pick, i like it as it is low risk even without the family connection, but he has a standing reach of 9'0, If you are going to be as slow and unathletic as Isaiah, have a 9'9 standing reach like Gobert.

I am not trying to hate on the kid, he is well coached, great passer and shooter, but almost no inside game and he will struggle on defense because he cant switch onto smaller people. But having Kevin Love as a mentor should help, and 100% worth taking a shot on him in the 2nd.

Not saying he's the next Draymond Green, just saying that scouting reports are not always gospel here.

Weaknesses:
  • Defending on the perimeter
  • Lacks ideal NBA athleticism
  • Breaking down defenders in one-on-one iso situations
  • Will probably have to cut some weight to gain athleticism and quickness

Draymond always had strength and competitiveness going for him though.

There's also the body not working at NBA speed and the brain not working at NBA speed. Brain not working at NBA speed is worse.

Who are you talking about, Green or Mobley? Not sure what this comment is saying.

I'm saying that lots of guys have athleticism, but anticipation, thinking a step ahead can be more impactful. We know elder Mobley has a good BBIQ. He doens't have great athleticism, but he can move his feet. He will be fine.

I’m not as optimistic but I hope you’re right! IF he is indeed a serviceable backup it’ll be a great pick.

It's the multiple skill sets that are interesting to me. Playmaking, defense, shooting. IF he can play defense at an NBA level, then he will be able to get on the floor. If the other 2 translate, he could be good.

If he can hit wide open threes and defend at a somewhat passable NBA level he could see minutes. I'm just not convinced he won't get abused by NBA level players. I saw him live against an Arizona team that just had 3 players drafted and he couldn't hang at all in that game. He's team was outmatched, so not a totally fair comparison, but SC was also a top 20 team and lost by 20 something at home.

I hope I'm wrong. I think he has value to Evan and if he can add some basketball value on court we'll be stoked.
