Is that Darius stat at all an indictment of Larry not rolling hard to the rim? I think so.

Nance stops short of the paint a lot

He does and it has frustrated me about him since he got here

He went all the way as a Laker and I dont know if its health that caused him to adjust or being pressured to step out and spread the floor more. But I'd rather see him pick and roll hard without abandon than pick and pop. If I had to break it down on a percentage ratio for how much I'd rather he pick and roll to rim looking to finish over pick and pop to spread floor, I'd say 80-20.

It's the same thing that happened to Ibaka. He was scary and nearly unstoppable setting picks for Harden and then finishing above the rim. It's a big part of what got him that contract I bet. But then as soon as he focused on spreading the floor and offering range, he stopped playing above the rim on those rolls.

Nance being more reluctant to take the top off defenses after a pick makes him replaceable or brings the same skillset Love and Wade bring but as a worst shooter. Nance picking and rolling with abandon fills a need just like Allen does.

Forget OKC Ibaka, look at last night's Clipper/Mavs game for an example of this. The BIG difference for Luka that helped unlock his game again last night was not going from Dallas to Staples, it was Carlisle recognizing the Clippers had adjusted their defense to Porzingis picking and popping 100% of the time. Porzinigis would hurt LAC so much more if he at least did 50/50 but he seems adverse to it for whatever reason.

Carlisle puts Boban out there who is so big that just his presence rolling to the basket takes the top off a defense and when he sits, he dusted off Powell who rolls with abandon last night and that was the difference.

Luka was back to smiling and feeling "dangerous" as soon as he came off the pick and had his defender on his hip. He needed that roll guy to take the top off the defense at a 80-90% ratio more than he needs his screener to pop 100% of the time and hit those jumpers only 30% of the time. Luka got into a rhythm because Boban was taking defenders with him off those picks.

It's a science

Allen makes Garland and Sexton more dangerous because of it.

Totally agree. Nance is so worried about being a shooting spacer that he has abandoned his vertical spacing. AS usual mixing it up more to keep the defense off balance would be more effective.

TT at least was rolled hard and set very good screens. Nance is not as good there

Maybe he is also scared of getting injured... He is already fragile as it is with basketball injuries and other health stuff... I like his game, but I don't have confidence in his availability would ever be good...

The other piece to the puzzle here is that our guards often rush into the PnR instead of allowing the bigs to set & broaden themselves prior to their attacks.

A jab step, hesitation dribble, or crossover into the screen as misdirection helps to get that defender on the guards back hip ala Luka and CP3 and many other greats.
This is a skill honed over time, but yet another piece to the puzzle of how to properly attack offensively.

Setting up the screen forces the defense to either rotate further or hedge the screen harder freeing up more floorspace for either backdoor cutters or well positioned & ready shooters.

I don't know. He plays hard. Invariably he is hurt when he looks passive
They just better be careful and try to pay Allen a decent 4/90 but not overpay at 25 per. and hopefully he doesn't decide to test the market feeling the offer is cheap, where they will then most likely lose Hartenstein in the middle of Allen' testing the market process. Then have to overpay Allen if anyone offers him an overpay outside of the Cavs.Hartenstein is probably getting a lot of interest if he turns down his PO as well is my feeling.

Yeah Sexton is especially impatient. That was one thing TT was really good for him. He set a screen fast

Sexton plays at a really fast tempo and views the game at that speed. Hes been better about slowing it down but he needs to do it more. We were spoiled with Kyrie who was always excellent at seamlessly shifting tempos

Also our team should play faster. Allen, Okoro, Nance, Sexton.

Playing faster and playing reckless/out of control, are very different, though. Collin teeters too much on the latter.

I think Sexton is also figuring out how he can use tempo to his advantage. Late in the season, I remember him just walking the ball up with his head down then got the defense thinking they were going to milk the clock. He got towards the 3 pt line and put on the jets to easily get to the basket without anyone around him.

He should practice throwing ahead. I think he'd be great.
yeah every one of the current bigs, should be working with Love on outlet passes 101, before next season.
Hartenstein probably already working on it, Denver looking duuuummmb right now.
