Goodbye Larry Nance Jr.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

For your re-viewing pleasure.

Nance with 2 lovely looking treys and a line of 13/7/7 with a steal and a block in 27 minutes. Draymond-Lite, at your service!

The Anti-Donkeylips. I'm actually kind of surprised at how good a passer he appears to be. Sometimes I think it's Cedi and it turns out to be Larry. I want to see him taking more 3s... not ahead of anyone else mind you but enough to make people respect him. His form looks better than say... TT but that's not particularly the highest of bars

I wasn't optimistic that his 3 would be very good. It looks repeatable to me. If he makes it to mid 30%, then he should go for it. I am thinking that he is a 4 now or small ball 5, but his best numbers are at the 4, and he seems more comfortable defending there.

@Sir'Dom Pointer right yet again, I guess. Pains me to say it ;)

A much better second half in tonight's game for Larry got some nice looks out of passes from Cedi and Matthew.

Yeah looks like he had some good Chemistry with Delly. Those are Larry's bread and butter getting point blank looks at the rim. It gets his defense going too apparently.

Still hate that he dribbles the ball up when he shares the backcourt with Sexton. Give your pg the ball.

FWIW Nance fouled the shit out of Dipo before he got that game winning tip. Or as AC called it, a nice "swim" move. It was nice to see us get a break in the form of a game changing uncalled foul, and Nance's moves were sweet as fuck... both the takedown and the tip.

That's why they are called "Centers". Once upon a time, the 5 spot was the "Center" of the offense and guards were for defense. (or endless dribbling in the days before the shot clock when "the key" looked like a key )

1. This was not just Nance’s first game-winning shot in the NBA or the best rebounding game (16) of his career. It was also the first time he played real stretches of a game as a point center.

2. Yes, Nance, a big man, is the Cavs’ assist leader this season (3.1 per, and Matthew Dellavedova’s 4.6 apg don’t count; he’s only been here five games). Nance’s assists usually come out of the post or when he catches the ball near the top of the key. Against the Pacers, Nance was literally running the offense, bringing the ball up the court. His team-high six assists are beside the point.

3. It’s a set Cleveland’s had since before the season even started, while Tyronn Lue was coach, where the rebounder (Nance, even Tristan Thompson or Kevin Love) initiates the break. The Cavs ran it so much Tuesday night that by the fourth quarter Nance was waving Collin Sexton off the ball and dribbling it up to get into a half-court offense. It got to the point where, during a timeout, coach Larry Drew outlined the next few plays with Nance not handling the ball, and Nance objected in what turned into a heated discussion.

...

5. The Cavs won the game when Nance tossed Victor Oladipo aside like a rag doll, grabbed an offensive rebound off Rodney Hood’s miss with 2.5 seconds left and tapped it back in for the game winner. He finished with 15 points. Who does this guy think he is? During the timeout setting up the Cavs’ last shot, Nance told Hood, for whom the play was drawn, to try to shoot it with enough time so Nance could do something like this. You know, if Hood’s shot didn’t find the net.

6. “He’s the reason I missed it,” Hood cracked.

Nice game and play by Nance yesterday. Real balanced and real good. I been critical of him but he showed me. Keep it up man.

I hope Drew will be able to balance letting Nance develop his passing skills while also making sure it doesn't get in the way of Sexton development. I think Drew needs to talk to Nance and say he has the green light to playmake for others with the 2nd unit but when he is out there with the starters and Sexton that Nance should focus on rebounding, put backs, and his 3 point shot.

Drew should encourage Nance to work with Sexton and find ways to play off each other. Have them work on alley-oops and other plays to build their chemistry.

I'm in the group that believes handing out free minutes to rookies without consequence just because they are rookies is likely to be harmful to their development. I think the "earned by default" minutes that Waiters and Irving got back in 2012 set them back more than it helped them. Made them entitled & selfish. Didn't force them to work on their game other than jacking up shots. There was no mechanism to reward good behavior and penalize bad habits. It imprinted them with the notion that losing as OK as long as you get your stats. Players should know that they are going to sit if they play losing basketball. Feeding a large number of minutes to an under-qualified rookie is more like what you do when you want to lose a lot of games.

OK, sure, you want enough film minutes to show them what they are doing wrong, but once you got a pattern of wrong stuff on tape, maybe bench them until they fix it in practice.

Seems like Nance got fed up with losing and wasn't going to let Sexton get the ball in a tight game. I might be misreading it, but it didn't seem like Sexton was all that thrilled when the team won.

p.s. I'm predicting a L.N.JR. triple double before the season is over

I feel like Sexton has earn the minutes he has been given. Sexton isnt anywhere close to getting the green light as Kyrie got. I feel like some of the disfunction between Kyrie and Dion was about playing keep away from each other. I see the same thing from Nance to Sexton.

Sexton is the point guard, typically they have the ball in their hands. We do play Sexton off the ball quite a bit. What I was saying is that Drew needs to balance Nance if they want to have him as a passer and Sexton to develop him properly. That doesn't mean cutting eithers minutes but to allow them to play at different times to grow both their games. At the moment I don't think Nance respects Sexton as the point guard or his game in general. He tends to ignore Sexton and only passes to him as a last option with the clock running out.

I thought Drew did a better job tonight of how to manage both players. Sexton needs reps and needs to touch the ball to develop. When there are too many guys in the unit who need the ball in their hands to make an impact, it just feels Sexton cut of working with the ball is too thin.

I think Kyrie had too much free reign of the offense especially his first year. He needed someone to share the ball with like Dion from day one. I also think Dion had a hard time adjusting to not having the ball in his hands all the time. I think there is a happy median between how we developed Kyrie and the lack of possessions Sexton got in the Pacers game.

Sexton seem real happy about the win after it happened. He was one of the first to go up to Nance to give him a high five and he had a big smile on his face.

I personally think Nance just has to come around to wanting to play with Sexton just like TT did. TT seem to ignore Sexton until JR left then it seem like TT turned the corner and realized it was in the teams best interest to see Sexton play well. Nance seems to be fine with Clarkson and is willing to do all the little things to get Clarkson shots.

I would like to see Nance used in the mid post with the ball in his hands, passing to cutters and wide open 3 pt shooters. Vlade Divac style. He should also be more aggressive and post up more. But Larry can pass the ball so giving him opportunities can create new ways to score the basketball and provide the coaches with new possibilities when it comes to play drawing.

Yes this goes back to playing our young talented players.

Sexton/Delly
Cedi/Clarkson
Hood/Burks (Interchangeable)
Nance/TT
Zizic

Make it happen Ferry.

Yeah it is fine to Have Nance do this playmaking thing, but he should do it with Collin and talk to him about what they are going to do instead of "i'll take care of this". He needs your help Larry. Larry also holds the ball too much, and should definitely give it up to get up the floor. We are missing transition opportunities because of it.
