Rajon HOT WATER Rondo

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He did do that last night though, even with them stacking the paint. Resulted in 6 FTAs.

Teams are going to stop consistently packing the paint, just like they stopped blitzing every high PnR, as long as Garland, Rondo, Cedi, Lauri, Stevens, etc keep showing the willingness to shoot wide open 3s.

If teams want to date the Cavs to shoot to beat them as opposed to pound them inside I am all for it with Garland, Cedi, Love, Lauri, and even Windler recently shooting the way they did last night. That defense won’t last.

Someone said teams “figured out” the Cavs in the game thread and that the Cavs “aren’t running what made them successful earlier in the season” and I simply can’t agree.

Teams are getting desperate to try and stop them and are throwing every trick in the book defensively to try and stop them. In the last month alone we’ve seen heavy game plans from opposing teams: blitzing PnRs, hedging PnRs, guys swinging to the high side on our ball handlers in PnRs, matchup zones, 2-3 zones, 3-2 zones, press. Any desperate look they can give the Cavs to get them out of their rhythm offensively.

As long as they keep breaking those different defensive looks, like they have been, we’ll go back to a more traditional defense against them and the spacing will open back up.

But they have to keep taking open looks at 3 when they’re given them like last night.

Totally agree about teams just throwing everything they have at the Cavs. They were trapping Mobley with Garland out! They will see every kind of defense by the end of the season. The Jazz tried to set a precedent trapping Garland, and they totally pick that apart now. Last night they tried it and it was Garland to Big to Big dunk. They can execute that perfectly now.

As for Rondo. He looks pretty good. I don't know if they will get that springy guy they got last night every night. He looked a little gassed at the end and was just reaching. Still, his gambling style defense works with this squad and he can afford to play in the passing lanes when he has Frobley behind him instead of Deandre Jordan.

He looks like he can really help and I am very curious how he can help the bigs. I thought Rubio was ok there, but not totally killing it like Darius.

this guy has been in the weightroom

I was surprised how quick he still is given he will be 36 in a month.
I don’t think it lasts long. A lot of times players are full of energy their first game with a new team then they slow back down. I don’t think rondos body can handle going that fast the rest of the year. He’ll have to save it for the playoffs.

As amazing as a passer Rubio is, I always felt his weakness was in throwing post entry passes, despite playing with the Gasols for so long. Rondo excels here. Saw him throw get entrys over the top and the normal way yesterday. Really hope this is a skill Garland picks up from him as it is one of his weaker passes as well.

The great thing about Rondo vs Rubio is I think sometimes Rubio tried to do too much. Which was great when he splashed it against the Knicks. But when he's not on it, he can get frustrating. I think the only problem with Rondo really will be that he doesn't take shots sometimes.

Yeah they have a mirror image of each other. Similar as pure points in a lot of ways with similar high level understanding of the game.

Rubio is reckless by nature. His injury was sort of related to him playing this ping pong game as water running downhill through the defense.

Rondo is more about reading the defense instead of pinging all over the place looking for the gaps. Foucalt is totally on with the entry passes. Rubio loves shooting the gap while Rondo's passes are right on time and hard to pick off.

The bigger drop off from Rubio to Rondo will be on the defensive end imo. Rubio was just an awesome defender who utilized his size, hand-eye coordination, and IQ to be extremely disruptive on that end. Rondo is a negative on D at this point in his career, but I feel like we have the defensive back line for him to potentially provide neutral value there as long as he gives full effort.

Rubio had a 3.1 defensive raptor as a guard. That is crazy. The loss of Rubio should hurt our defense on paper. He was so underrated.

He was also 5th in the NBA in D-RAPM.

Just a complete pest on the ball, great at navigating screens, and always making crisp rotations. I don’t think people here appreciated his defensive value enough.

Why are you being so quiet about Garland being 4th in the NBA in RAPM? The fuck...

And Rubio being 18th is fucking crazy...and sad.

Avdija is 31st... rip

Doncic is 542... lol

Hope Sexton gets to spend some time with him even just watching films and being mentored (ballhandling, defending & setting up teamates), he could learn a lot of things from Rondo...
Rondo, Rubio, Love & even Davis to an extent are all great vets to have. Hell even Cedi is, he just doesn't have the pedigree that the 1st three have.

It's higher than last year's MVP and last year's finals MVP. It's also weird to see he is ranked higher in DRAPM than ORAPM. His DRAPM is higher than Jrue Holiday's, who is likely the best defensive PG in the league.

Personality wise and physically I think Rondo is closest to Sexton... he might be able to help him mature his game and be more in control and make quicker correct decisions.... if Sexton let's him mentor him

I was thinking this today and sorry they aren't getting court time together
