Welcome Raul Neto

What's the cap rule with min contracts? Some don't count against the cap..

Vets minimum contracts actually just pay more than the cap hit. It's something like 1.5 million against the cap but the player gets something like 2.2 million.

Edit: there is a scale for vets minimum that the player actually gets. So it can be from 1.5-2.6 based off years but the cap hit will always be based off of a 2nd year players scale which is about 1.5 million.

Neto has been an NBA player for 8 years. He's not good but don't disrespect the man by calling him Kevin Pangos.
Define good. He's certainly not starter good but he is a good defender at the position, managed a nearly 3:1 A:TO ratio last year, and is usually an average 3PT shooter at around 36%. Would I want him starting for long stretches? Nope. However he averaged over 7 PPG last year and 3 APG last year in under 20MPG. He's solid in a way Pangos never was.

He can score a bit, is a threat from the 3PT arc, can play D, and can distribute. Will he create? Nope. Can he run an offense off the bench? Yep.

He's a substantial improvement over what we had last year after Rubio got hurt just as Robin Lopez is an improvement over Ed Davis. These aren't huge signings but are nice pluses to depth that do matter when injuries happen.

Min salary players always count against the cap, however, teams get an automatic exception for any min salary player they want to sign, so teams can always sign them, regardless of their tax or cap situation

There are some weird things about min salary contracts:
  • the league pays any portion of a min salary contract that's over $1,836,090, so that teams are encouraged to sign vets over newbs
  • only the portion that the team pays counts against the luxury tax, so min salary players over $1,836,090 only count $1,836,090 against the luxury tax, so that teams are encouraged to sign vets over newbs
  • undrafted rookies count $1,637,966 towards the salary cap even if they are paid less, to prevent teams from marching in their cousins younger bro to increase cap space
  • Two way salaries are lower than min salary and don't count towards the tax or the cap

Here's the min salary chart for this season:
Years of Experience Salary
0 $1,017,781
1 $1,637,966
2 $1,836,090
3 $1,902,133
4 $1,968,175
5 $2,133,278
6 $2,298,385
7 $2,463,490
8 $2,628,597
9 $2,641,682
10+ $2,905,851

He has been brought in to be a back up PG about 15 minutes a game until Rubio. His numbers support that role... Good move in my mind. I kind of wanting Tyus Jones but he resigned so this is a good backup plan...

I watched a lot of Neto because of Rui there. Even though he averaged 29% from the 3 last year, his career 3pt percentage is 36.7%. He can make 3s at the right wing when he is wide open.

Two things I like of him - he is a great passer. He finds open men clearly. It’s good to have guys cut to the basket because he will find them. He played with Lopez together one year and he can make great no look passes underneath. He plays really hard on defense and there will be plays he will make that make a difference in a game or two.

I’m not saying he is phenomenal. He is a decent backup 2nd/3rd PG and can come in quite useful.

Better than our backup PGs when Rubio is down. I like his attitude and he is not Pangos. Don’t disrespect Neto.

I wonder if his contract is fully guaranteed or it's unguaranteed and we can just cut him in January if Rubio is healthy and the guarantee date hasn't hit.

At vet min, you just eat the contract if you want to cut him.
